I don't think artists should be making music for anyone other than themselves. Everything evolves. Genres evolve into new genres, or split into sub-genre, or even disappear completely to make room for something new. I think this is also true of artists, producers and even we, the audience...we're all constantly evolving. 'Amazing' is such a subjective experience that it almost invalidates the question in my view.
I think as soon as any creative person starts creating something based on what other people would have them do or based on current trends, then already something been lost from the natural creative process.
The fact is, you can't please everyone all the time. That doesn't mean to say that successful producers shouldn't be respectful to fans. But in a way, it's short changing those fans to make music because you think they'll like it, rather of what comes naturally to you from the ether.
Most musicians start out making music they want to hear themselves or because they have been inspired in some way. In my experience, it's often that very aspect of a track or album that touches me on a personal level - you know, when you really can feel the soul within a piece.
While I think producers should be respectful of the fans that contribute to their success, I also think we the fans should perhaps be a bit more respectful of our artists by allowing them to make the music they feel compelled to make, even if it means risking that we won't like it. |
