I agree entirely with allowing a DJ to play a longer set, in order to express their talents mroe fully. Listening to Tristan play his DJ set at Samothraki was amazing. Three and a bit hours of "journey"! The set started at one speed and never altered in pace. The music on the other hand started with atmospheric progressive/funky trance through to mind twisting stomping psychadelic. After spending the previous five days dancing madly, I did not think I could have managed this at the end of the festival, but when the music from a good DJ takes you on that "journey", then you do not notice the tiume/heat/pain...

hi all, new here.

I've read bits of the thread and have to say one thing.

I was in Croatia for Underground-Overwater this summer and for some reason there were some seriously long sets, 6hours from Tristan and 8 from Dimitri, people were loving it and the music kept playing them.

Long sets take you on a journey, allow the dj time to tease the crowd and keep u on the dance floor for fucking hours as no live set can. It's a lot more rewarding as a punter to dance to one long set than see three musically different live acts.

Long dj sets=trance

so less space age wigging out and more proper trance please. I will attend any DJ only party.

I can't remeber the last time when one of those dj's you've never heard of gets up there and plays music no one's ever heard before for 3 hours and makes it a real happening of mind blowingly intelligent music...

despite all our lovely dreaded trancefloor friends still stomping about smiling when music is awful, when it's really good they show it

lives are great, but as well as obviously being restricted to one act dont really involve mixing:

it's mixing that plays a very important part of a good set. Anyone can shove sheep satellite on but if mixed in really well then it's a bomb...

there's nothing like the shiver down the spine when suddenly the cross fader flies across and bam in comes wizzy noise PERFECTLY matched - it turns the trance into a musical instrument

mixing trance isn't too much of a challenge for those with a musical ear, so bring on good dj sets for me any day

Always one to put his money where his mouth is Humph has decided to throw a dj only party in london. (see other thread for full details) in March with Pogo and Dick trevor (both truly talented mixers), Humphrey himself and Nick from Beat 1.
Nick is a dj you won't have heard of who plays tracks you won't have heard in a way you want to hear. Hopefully you can all make it down and we will trance out properly as we always should.
Best wishes Henry

Long sets are nice, would be nice if everyone played 5 hours each! Then you could play the most killer set in the world.

sorry to drag the thread back to the topic...or close enough anyway...

one thing i have noticed out here in Oz is that after each set there is a slight pause, before the next set gets underway. i am not sure if this is the case back in Europe.
in respect to the DJ or live act this is a nice way to give a little repect to them to say thanks, a small clap or something.
in respect to the JOURNEY this is two fingers in the air. espcecially as many dj sets are only 1.5 hours, every time the dj changes the music STOPS and then carries on.
it is totally crazy, the music should be a seamless merge from the first beat to the last.

another thought towards the loss of the journey thread this seems to have become....

good luck to humph, dj only night, wish i could experience it...........
