...answering your question, how long did it take me to feel my music made sense in order to play it? i guess never man haha , not even today i feel that . for sure i realize that people are not shooting themselves in the face when we play music, so that means at least that its not the worst crap in the world, but thats about it...

i think the only true way of doing it, is being sincere with yourself, if its not enough for you, then its not enough for the world to hear (yet). put your track on, then put something you like/admire, then put your track again. how does it sound? does it make sense? its just as simple as being true to yourself...

i would even say that already thinking how many tracks you need to get pro is something that will drive you crazy

i think that you should forget about playing/releasing when doing music. i think also sometimes the social factor of 'being part of the scene' plays a big part in the degradation of the style. i see trance more as a spiritual/artistic discipline that happens to interact with parties and hanging out, not the other way around.

Heh - of course no one is ever (or rarely ever) 100% satisfied with their sound. What I am referring to is less about creative journey/sound design per se and more about production standards.

I mean, you're not going to blast a track you made on a big rig if it doesn't have some base level of quality to it on the production/engineering side. From your answer it seems that if you started around 2001 and played your first party in 2003...did you or Matias have any prior production knowledge before that time?

2 years of work before playing out...that's not bad

Would be curious as to other people's experience. How about you Cinder - I know you were a band geek and stuff in school so you obviously have a musical background...and I'm not sure when you got into DJing/organizing/producing or which came first, but I'm curious as to your journey as well, specifically how long it was between opening up your DAW for the first time and playing out a track you produced at a party.

Edit - I agree with you filter in respect to the doing music for music's sake and not in order to play out at some kickass party and be the cool dj duder....and I am in no rush to get there as I'm enjoying the journey, but at the same time playing a full live set of original material at a party is a long term goal and I'm sure I am not alone in my curiousity as regards established artist's experiences            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

haha yes ok it was 2 years and it basically happened when someone else noticed that we did sounded 'ok'

but we never really 'realized' it, we just more or less did what we liked and tried to more or less 'match' it in sound. we really didnt have much production knowdledge before, but we met some people over the years that gave us some tips.

but i think we became serious after the tour in 2006 when we listened to all the real mothafuckas...

i guess just now we are reaching a level that is "good" at least in production terms...

Matias and me we never really studied a whole career or something like this. I learned some instruments, he started music school, but eventually we stopped. But matias for example is a full power student on his own, he always liked to read and study about technical stuff and he has a natural skill for it. He also works part time as a electronic music teacher using ableton live. We are very lucky to have him actually.

One good example of a person that studied and had a very good musical background for me is martin/glosolalia. Not only he has a natural skill to make music, he was the only that actually almost made it with a nu metal band and he finished a short career in a music school here in argentina. for martin it took only one year to reach a professional level, the first tracks he sent us were amazing, it sounded incredible and the ideas were simply awesome. Some people just simply have the passion and the skill to do it, some are naturals and some are hardworkers, but it all boils down to the sincere need to express yourself.

so i guess 1/2 years is ok

TY again for your great responses

Jealous of people with a music background

Would be cool to hear from (or of) other producers out there who just jumped in without any musical knowledge beforehand and just 'swum their way out of the deep end' to use a Tom Cosm phrase and are releasing good music.            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

ok i have another one for you guys

will o wisp/gaston, he never studied music and he never played in any bands when he was younger. actually he was never really a full power music fan until he discovered psychedelic trance. he was of course into music and parties and everything, but after listening to the wave of 2005 with highcosmo and the russians, he went crazy and started slowly approaching the scene, first as a dj and then as a producer.

gaston is the one of the best examples i can give you of someone that has a natural talent to handle technical stuff and that with time has become an amazing musician. he was an excellent dj for example, he never missed a mix and he knew every single good track from all the compilations and albums around.

in the last 2 years, after being exposed to other artists music he got really serious and his growth as a musician has been huge. what he lacked in musical background he compensated by studying the style a lot and just sitting and working like a motherfucker. he had a more natural skill for technical stuff, but he worked really hard in his music skills, and in the end you have an awesome result .

so basically yeah, its not about the musical background, it doesnt hurt to have one, but you can always make up for this by just starting today ...

Woot! Always great to hear atypical success stories about people who weren't musical prodigies at a young age. Heh, a friend who traveled throughout Europe this past summer for all the big psy festivals said that Will O Wisp was one of her favorite acts of the year.

Gives me even more inspiration to continue buckling down and working my ass off!! Now if only I didn't have this stupid 40hr/week job....bah            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

Kudos to the matrix part, that's just about exactly the feeling I get from some 'darkpsy', like Alien Mental, Kindzadza or Kashyyyk for example

How about calling it 'Matrix trance'

The trouble with saying dark psy makes you 'confront your fears' is that that's a purely subjective description of some person's own experience.

I personally have never been confronted with my fears through psy labeled 'dark psy', even when that term was first used.

My fears are aroused by a different style than that, and only when I have fears to arouse. Mostly deep, dark psy makes me feel empowered, not fearful.

Has anybody else ever felt a particular dark psy track made them confront their fears? If so I'd love to hear about it and which track in particular took them there.
