It appears that there is a lot of misunderstanding regarding the dark side of our beloved music. It's hard to find anything that really suits someone's taste. To make things simpler, is there any darkpsy lover who is willing to write a short description of trends and styles of dark psychedelia? Some recommendations or labels would be appreciated. |

dark psy is like the sound of boiling blood mixed with heroine which is then converted into a molten gooey mass something like a placenta any further description?

darkpsy is the sound of cauldron's bubbling, leaking sewerage pipes and unbaptized babies screaming in the first circle of Hell.
Also, darkpsy can sound like the whispers of alien life forms and the squeals of their technology in the darkest recesses of freezing space. |

There is a big difference among the so called "dark psy",it is almost as if the track got a fat bass and uses lots of psychedelic sounds than it`s called dark psy.
It is misleading and confusing for many people that much stuff are called dark just because it is very psychedelic and deep.It has nothing to do with promoting evil or something like that.It wants you to go inside,explore and break the matrix.Of course not all artist do that but those who are worth listening to does it.
And i know that many are afraid of doing that and when they hear sounds and vibrations that can make you do that they call it dark because they are afraid of going deep inside.One can think of dark as the unknown or unexplored territories.
Some different styles:
We have the SA(south africa) style which sounds like Shift,Abomination,Phyx,Menog,Zion Linguist,Outer signal etc.It`s often around 145-150 bpm.This style got much melody and still uses lot`s fx,but more melody then the faster stuff
We got some very psychedelic and often more harder stuff like:Derango ,Atriohm,Gidra,Gappeq (parvati style),it is more oriented on fx and uses melodies with a more "futuristic" concept,almost like a hybrid between fx and melodies.
We got producers like Phatmatix,Mindcore,Digital talk which i think got itself quite a unique and special style.
There is alot of stuff like Kindzadza,some of Ocelots work,Bodhi13:20,Naked tourist,Electrypnose etc that are classed as dark psy just because it has a fat bass,fast bpm and uses lot`s of psychedelic sounds.I cant see that it has anything to do with the traditional concept of darkness as something bad and evil.Neither can I see that the styles and artists i mentioned above has anything to do with that either.It is just powerfull,spiritual and mind exploring.It is just psychedelic music with lots of psychedelic sounds that make you go inside .It has nothing to do with somekind of darkness or evil it`s just fast and hard psytrance.
Then we got some stuff which i would call horror psy.If you would talk about evil or something bad then it`s here we got the spot.I find this to be very childish,unintelligent, non spiritual and it does not give me anything.It is music which focuses on themes about hurting others and being bad towards others,suffering,pain and so on.Themes on corpses,gore etc.This attracts wrong kind of people to the scene.Lots of down pitched laughters, screaming and samples from horror movies.I never listen to this and i dont see the connection with this and the other parts of the so called "dark psy" that i have mentioned other then that both uses a low octave bass and got a fast bpm etc.This music takes me no where, no story telling,no travel,no depth,no inner experince ,i want a strong, deep, mystical ,spiritual,mind exploring experince when listening to twilight stuff and this horror style is not even close to that.
I say put on stuff like:Derango,Phatmatix,Atriohm,Shift etc and there you got some intelligent,powerfull,spiritual stuff!

It's to hard to describe, I like it all in it's variations... right now on my play list I have 1200 dark psy tracks of all styles.
I think with this style you either love it or hate it. No in between and it is very much like heavy metal in that sense.
I don't really care what other psy people in the scene think of this style, or if they want to know the sub genres, I love it and I'm glad many cd's of it are being pumped out still, if only i had more $$$!
I'd say to find out about it you need to just check some labels:

Thank you all for your input. I've heard tags like psycore, mexican school or forest trance, so I'm still waiting for someone that can describe those styles. Yep, I'm looking forward to description of sub-genres of this sub-genre. Circles within circles, further fragmentation = further exploration.

Forest trance should soumnd like trance made by trees with lots of squeaky creakyness.
Then you have your evil aliens stuff like Osom/KDD/Psykovsky.
Large monster in dark cave trance like oliens "sounded paratronic"
Then there's "knifed by a syphiliptic hooker and left to die in your own urine trance" brought by artists like catatonic despair.
Japanese crazy industrial trance by savage scream.
Then Stranger, Orestis, Hishiryo have the fast but not too crazy trance.
Then Ghreg on earth who does "ghreg on earth style"
You should be able to see all those sections clearly labelled in your favourite record store. |

OK, to be more specific, for me again it's 2 different sounds/styles.
Organic & Industrial.
Organic is what you may call Forest Trance (shrooms ) Scandinavian sounds and spacey & bubbly sounds.
Industrial sounds like Japanese stuff, fast & chaotic, Highko, Orestis, Zik etc etc.

Dark Full On / Twilight: i don't know any label name, but artists like Tube, Shift, Iron Madness, Azax Syndrom etc...
Night Music: Zaikadelic
And a lot of mixture, like high BPM 170 - 200, Greek music is quite unique, Macedonian also has this crazyness, Usa is making some kind of sub genre...

as far as i have heard i can distinguish:
- the forest with:
derango, whrikk, biosynthesis, pandoras box, purosurpo, procs
- the technological & glitchy with:
cosmo, kindzadza, psykovsky, terranoise, highko, furious
- the alien with:
kashyyyk, megalopsy, will o wisp, glosolalia, alien mental, polyphonia, arcek
- the tribal
enichkin, plankton, the nommos
the horror/macabre:
audiopathik, xiwry neyrra, zik, hishiryo, baphomet engine
- ant the crazy ass jappanese:
savage scream, far east ghost, fatal discordi, noise gust, baal, mphisto, diablos, blizzard
maybe to some this will sound the samee.. but i heard them totaly diffrent and can distinguish their soundf very easily
