Artist: Damage
Title: God Help Us
Format: CD
Label: Chemical Crew
Cat. #: CHEM cd 06

Okay, so we were for the most part disappointed with Chemical Mafia, which just had 2-3 songs worth listening to in the long run. My favorite chemical crew artists include Void, Exaile and Skazi so I’m not the most familiar guy on the damage side but what he gave us before in compilations was promising stuff.

1) God Help Us – 145 BPM
Overall good intro to the album. The beginning of the track gives us an idea of his direction with some funky shit playing and a very very good beat- very deep and dark and you can tell he spent quite some time working on this beat. The bass is a little too basic, like we’ve heard it a thousand times before. Some interesting twists in the storyline but not quite dark enough to send God out to help me. 8/10

2) Happy Darkside – 146 BPM
The bass is more interesting in this one and the sounds have more power and are more interesting. There are weird melodies and interesting samples. And actually I like these weird melodies a lot; they fit well with the chaotic nature of the track. This one is better that the first track and will sure be played by lots of djs. 8.5/10

3) Get Funked Up – 145 BPM
Very good start, powerful and he gets right into it. Then the main melody is boring, too common and the instrument we’ve heard too much. The bass is good though, pretty funky, as would be suggested by the title. But after 4 minutes, he finally gives us a weird enough melody to feel again some chaotic vibes. This track deserves a bit more work because it could be very good- it’s like you get sucked into this spiral towards the end but it does sound a tiny bit rough on the edges. 8/10

4) Schneller – 145 BPM
He calms things down here, with lighter melodies and more subtle work. My favorite track so far, with some very nice melodies and a good bouncy feel to it, perfect for those of us who need to dance like zombies at one point during the night. We get to see the full extent of his talent, great work on this one; now that’s more of a finished track! 9/10

5) Dead People – 148 BPM
Good background noises, very trippy. A nice follow up to the last track with great dance floor energy. This one is more of a smasher though, it gets you more deeply involved. Solid stuff here. 8.5/10

6) Porno Fever – 145 BPM
On this one, I felt like in a nightmare almost. All the elements were there. More than porno fever, he’s invading our heads and raping our brains here, the voice samples are especially intruding. The melodies keep on attacking you like evil robotic goblins. 8/10

7) No Boundaries – 145 BPM
This one also is very atmospheric, the pads are deep. No groove here and more repetitive, less inspired than the previous couple of tracks. It starts to get interesting after the 4th minute when he changes the bass around but nothing exceptional. Some good ideas but unfinished to make it really trippy. 7.5/10

8) Spin Me – 148 BPM
And now here come the guitars along with little bell sounds. Not my favorite guitar track but better than a lot of other shit I’ve heard this past year. Voice sample sounds a little techie for me but alright, I’ll go along with it, it wouldn’t be enough to make me bad trip on the dance floor. A little too 80s for me, all I can think of is pretty-boys with long blond curly hair and shiny leather pants, like a heavy metal boys band… sorry mate. 7.5/10

9) Accidental Damage – 148 BPM
With a promising start, again it goes down for me because of the repetitive nature of the melody. It picks up at about 2 minutes into the track with some thrashing sounds, like smooth power saws. The voice sample really messes things up though on this one. I don’t know what she’s saying ‘in my house’ or something but it’s way too housy-sounding. Again, some of the elements of this track are amazing (like that saw and the pad) but it is too overshadowed by other sounds, not even the weird melody does it for me on this one. 7.5/10

Conclusion – very metallic sounds, dark atmosphere. Undeniable Chemical Crew influence (though not from Void or Exaile). It’s dance floor oriented so don’t get this one for home listening purposes- it screams to be played out loud. Perhaps my favorite element in the album is this powerful beat that Damage worked for us, which has the effect of a thousand elephants stomping on your head. The middle of the album is best though, in my opinion. Feel free to disagree, maybe I’m just not in the mood for this type of music anymore, or maybe I can’t get over how disapointing chemical mafia was. I like this stuff here best when he starts playing very subtle and weird melodies.

Overall: 8/10

Favorite trax: 2, 4(!), 5
Secondary trax: 3, 6

I liked some early Damage tracks, but I was expecting more from this album...

There's no Inovation IMO, and that's a quality an album must have in order for me to like it.

Too much Chemical Crew influences... Not much psychedely... I was expecting something deeper.

Surely some tracks work at the Dancefloor, but we all have lots of tracks that work as well. I think people these days are looking for some DIFFERENT dancefloor bombs.

This is constructive criticism.

Disapointing for me. Instead of being ahead of Chemical Crew, like his prior tracks, he became one of them. Oh well... Didn't have too much expectations from this one anyway.           Everyone in the world is doing something without me

Didnt like it much...but the last track Accidental Damange has been my favourite for a long time now its good that it finally released. It sure is a Masterpiece. Best part abt the trax in this album r his main breaks love the way he does it in accidental and some of the others.
Waitin for some serious bombs from chemical crew up next like the Skazi album!! cant wait for that one is going to be a stomper to the core! its suppose to release in may or so but u never know with chemical crew the release dates r always screwed up. Also coming up next will be the Paranormal Attack album which seems like its packed alot of power in it like the rmx to Marilyn mansons sweet dreams and Go On Remix. The Tube album is what is goin to be in store for us next month and it too looks like a smasher. Keep dropping the Bombs hard and fast CC !

sounds nothing like void man, void is much more psychedelic. maybe closer to new skazi stuff.

the album is heavy, for dancefloor only.

was expecting a lot from damage but thats a different story as i really digged his tracks which were out previously on compilations ..... but this album is very boring, repetitive and a total disapointment to me and yes the title is apt .....

maybe the album aint that bad but ive noticed a general disintrest from my side in psytrance these days ..... most of the music being released aint ringing any bells ..... lets hope things change and some good PSYCHEDELIC albums are released this year ...........

peace
