The music business, or how music is being distributed, is evolving in a very curious way. Radiohead spurred this revolution and other are following suit. They are well aware that people download albums for free but they also know that hardcore fans will drop cash on their music. That's what psy artists should do perhaps. We all know that some heavy downloading has been going on for more than 5-6-7 years. We all need to share some ideas how can artists make music and still generate profit.
My suggestion is to sell CDs at parties...or charge more at the door but include a legit CD in the price. Second suggestion is ALL(i mean every single to the last one)Psy artists to make their music available for sale in low compression rate. If people want the real sound they will get a CD. This will also kind of eliminate crappy stuff out there. People will download an album but if everyone knows its crap they won't buy the CD.
keep em coming...

Sorry, but that won't work. One of the biggest reasons is simply that a lot of people don't buy CDs any more because they're through with physical media. I don't know anyone who doesn't own a portable music playing device... which might not be the case everywhere in the world, but it sure accounts for a lot.
Here's what happens when a label or artist doesn't sell high-bitrate files for a good price at the big name download shops: people simply download their releases from pirate blogs, torrents, P2P file sharing networks, or don't bother hearing it at all. The entire notion that you can somehow limit the quality of media available online in order to spurn people on to buy physical media is simply flawed.
Unfortunately there isn't much hard data associated with some of the more daring distribution models modern technology has made possible. I am currently hard at work exploring the concept in a hands-on kind of way: my netlabel releases music for free download in MP3/WAV and manufactures CDs "on demand" whenever an order comes through. We've just made our first release and there are several more lined up in the pipe. Response has been great... we've even sold a few CDs! Whether we can turn a profit doing this is anyone's guess--it hasn't been done before, after all--but I will be happy with any eventuality as long as people are hearing the music. Time will tell!

Copying and Illegal Downloading is killing our music!!!
A lot of the arguments I've read here seem very weak.
And I'll use our own sonictraveler.biz "legal" download site to refute some of the arguments...
1) Distributors and Agents get 80% or more of the money and are the real crooks in this business.
- Well, we deal directly with artists and labels and they get much more than 20% of the gross sales
2) Music is too expensive
- come on! 1.26 euro for MP3 320kbps and 1.89 euro for Wav is not expensive! Same as a can of coca-cola!
3) Music is just for promotion, give it away for free to get gigs
- good luck! you will get gigs if your music is good and the promoter thinks its cost effective to bring you. What percentage of artists in this scene make a living from playing gigs?
4) I download only to listen to samples and if I like it, I will buy it.
- this justification is a load of crap. Most online sites offer samples and sonictraveler.biz offers full track samples!
I think the psytrance music industry has been affected "negatively" by copy and downloading. Things are changing with digital downloads providing convenient, reasonably priced and same quality services. There is no need for artists and labels to go through distribution companies. We are living in the digital aga and the music industry has to wake up. They can distribute (via ftp) directly to digital download sites "easily". What we really need is an attitude adjustment and sense of fairness from the public... buy music and support the artists and labels that make the music you love!!!
There is a story in latest sonic traveler magazine about digital downloads I will try to get and post here.

i can bet everybody in this topic has downloaded something in their lives software, porn, movies, codecs, pictures, music and the list goes on...and which idiot is gonna pay 50e per month for a 10mega net connection to read the news=? and the internet connection providers are fully aware of what would happen if they for example totally would ban p2p sales of connections collapses and so on and they are in a business selling more not less

This claim is often made yet we have more active artists and labels than ever before... I don't think this tired old guilt trip is helpful at all.

To clarify my position, I am not against the traditional commercial distribution system whether physical or online. Free music is a great strategy for artists seeking additional exposure, but the promotional benefit of another track on MySpace or an MP3 sent around with Rapidshare is limited. I'm in this to increase the quality level of free music--to open it up as an alternative to the commercial distribution system. It doesn't have to be their only approach. There is no single solution to the problems facing artists and labels today... but a continuum of options that should be explored and developed.
With that said, reasonably priced high-quality digital downloads have my full support. Online psytrance suppliers need to beat the price point of CDs and offer a diverse catalogue to really succeed. More labels should get on board with Cytopia and other players in this emerging market. If a label isn't offering their entire catalogue for sale online in 320k MP3 and WAV format they are losing out on a great deal of business. |

All the Psy Artists that I personally know that live off the scene are getting most of their money from gigs and dj'ing.

I don't know all the sites but the ones I know, Beatport, Psyshop and Saikosounds offer ridiculously short and/or really low quality clips. If I want to buy something I'd download it first the pirate way and than if I like it I buy it. I have been doing it for many years and so do many friends of mine. So don't tell me my justification is load of crap. I am just avoiding disappointment.

music cannot be killed
music is nothing but tuned airwaves
go read mozart...besides mozart, beethooven, tchaikovski etc their music did not get killed because of lack of sales and people "stealing" their compositions...infact it made them more famous...music labels and artists have to learn from these guys on how to make money and yet not think about sales

What really ¿is killing the scene is bad music.
I'll bought more if more good music will be realesed, but I'm lucky if a find one or two albums that fit my taste per month. |

Copying and sharing doesn't kill music. Well, this topic was started on Dec 26, 2001... 7 years later, and we see a lot more releases in a month than ever before.
