ppl the artists are here for you ! if you want that they would be here then buy their cd's and go to their gigs. if you want them to vanish then continue burning and downloading.

The setup is easy... they scan networks and download heaps of MP3s and then turn around and post them on the web, hoping to net some traffic from search engines and such. Those testimonials are probably made up--check any other album and see if the same comments have been left. These sites don't do a heck of a lot of business on any one album. Chances are that no one has even checked out Palex's album before (but they will now). Anyhow, there's no stopping them--you just have to be smarter and promote yourself better.

THIS +1
What do y'all think about artists having pirate copies removed from Rapidshare/Megaupload etc (or Youtube etc - not home videos from people in the crowd, I mean DVD rips)? Which is easy enough to do, just email or use the report button
I'm not talking about RIAA (US music industry mafia) suing kids or grandmas for $10000s! I'm not even talking about going after admins of trading sites, why bother, and for some artists they are useful to spread promo tracks.
So does pulling pirate copies down make you less PSY????!?
(I'd think this was a non-question if I hadn't been bitched at on this forum for doing it...) |

Well its up to the artist how he want to distribute his music and whether what he wants more: money or promotion.
Fopr example Nine Inch nails has launched their new album GHOSTS, and they have some options for the public:
first tracks for free en digital format.
all the tracks (36) for $5 usd and a variaty of options for downlading
$10 for the two cd's and instant dowloading option
$75 for a package containing a dvd with the songs in multitrack format and artwork
and $300 for a package with vynils.
I think this is a way to give everyone in the public what they want, selling things an promoting their work.

Yeah I've downloaded that too - the thing is you have to give an email address, which is a lot more use for promotion than just tracks being passed around... |

You have to provide an email address if you download from their site... but you can also get it (legally) on torrent sites like TPB.
The Ghosts project is cool but of course it won't work as a model for every artist. They will succeed with this initiative precisely because they have a very large and dedicated following. Still, it is an excellent move on their part. Give the music away for free and sell the physical media. Fantastic.
