what's the difference?
as long as you don't use any of the auto mixing stuff pc software has, and use wavs instead of mp3s , imo it's the same thing.

Pfff, I'm sorry but CDs have never and will never earn as much respect as vinyl does. You guys are talking about CDJs vs Traktor SW and whatnot but let me assure you that the remaining 92% of the EDM scene thinks psytrance is a joke because our DJs suck in general and we shun vinyl as if it were the plague...

who cares about vinyl!!! psy has never been a vynil kinda music. it was mixed with tapes and dats.. in order to: get the freshest , most underground tracks around. i rather make a mixdown on one of my tracks in my home studio, polish and master them, and get them in the dancefloor, still hot.. wait for a vinyl release??????? ha i dont dink so. and who really cares if other ESM producers think psytrance is cheap because we dont use vinyl??? they probably just jealous cause they got only some shitty gigs at smelly pubs           www.soundcloud.com/elektroakustica/sets/downtempo/

vinyl is on the way out in the other EDM genres as well.. lately whenever we book techno or drum'n'bass dj's, they always ask for CDJs, and rarely if ever for 1200s anymore. and if they do, it's for Final Scratch or Rane Serato. only real traditionalists don't have a CD deck in their setup. it's just so much easier and cheaper to find, buy, and transport digital music.

seriously i think in 5 years only scratch jocks will be using vinyl anymore, the majority of EDM will be played on CDs and computers with sophisticated mini-controllers that allow for easy manipulation of digital music in a lossless format like FLAC or similar.

psy trance is not a good scene to be in for djs... i think its the less atractive style to play as a dj

as for the vinyl / cd thingy, ALOT of dj switched from 12" to cds (james zabiela, sander kleinenberg, alexander kovalski and the list go`s on...)

as for cdj`s or ableton and alikes...
u can sure make magic with ableton (i.e. richi howtin), but its much more usefull for artists... much less for djs.

as for traktor and alikes.. its crap

my 2 cents

if you want to be rich, u`ve got to be a bitch!

well i agree that psy is most about the actual person who does the music playing it, which is a real good thing and one of the reasons i like psy. before psy i was watching prog and house djs and always wonder who the hell was doing this music.
but i think there are very good djs which i really like to dance to, like dimitry, shane gobi, goa gil, tristan and others that i rather hear at a party than some "live acts" im not saying names but mostly the ones that play one wav file in their computers and dance like idiots.           www.soundcloud.com/elektroakustica/sets/downtempo/

Just my 2 cents here....

For a long time one of the most difficult thing about djing was the beatmatch. Nowadays the computers brought a new concept imho.

First of all it is absolutlly real that mixing with computer is much easier than with cdj. Why??? Cause with computer u have all the tracks "ready" to play. U only need to press play(not even at right time u need to press) to beatmatch the tracks.

But now, u can hear a lot of DJ´s making a lot more things than just Beatmatch. And how they do it??? With computers... It´s like impossible to biuld a nice machine to make fx´s like a computer( u will need several hardwares). So I guess this kind of DJ set is a new concept. And cannot be compared to CD, Vinyl, DAT dj´s sets...

Now a little question for our KILLER MASTER PC-DJ that opened this thread... Have u ever seen some DMC´s playing??? I´m curious to see a battle between u(with COmputer) and them(with the old Technicks mk2)....           LOADING...

i have still yet to see any DJ using a computer pull off any tricks such as fader cuts or beat juggling.

Granted not many psy dj' s do this or know how to do this themselves, and the genre doesnt particularly lend itself well to it (unlike breaks and techno) but there are some of us that do, and its sick when pulled off right.
Id like to see a computer dj do this stuff, and im sure its possible, but so far all ive seen from computer dj's is usually a 1 measure beat match cut and run, where as ive seen much more skillful and artfull mixing from the cdj users

and ps though vinyl is great for nostaligia, but it sounds like crap

hm for me a guy who plays from a computer is no real dj. first download the tracks then press the button. its far too easy.
and i agree with paradigm. i also have seen far more skillfull mixing from cdjs.           - last possible solution

^ as opposed to copying the CD and pressing play???

im looking at ableton live right now. i can already beat match (my mixes go for about ~4 minutes if i choose the right tracks) i can then focus on the actual mix (and yes i mix, i dont cross fade), or if im really adventurous i can completely remix a track on the fly. im still learing, but the possibilities are so much more than simply "beat matching two tracks without skill"

not to mention if the crowd doesnt like a track, the time from figuring that out to when i have a track ready to go is like, 10 seconds compared to minutes on cds...

so what if you have only seen dodgey computer djs. i've seen more dodgy CDJ's. DJ's that ambient mix every track, or do the same "wait till 1 min to go, press play, wait for break, change bass eqs" every mix... no creativity... tracks that sound the same as the last track played to the point where thier whole set is one level, going neith up nor down in energy... pffft...

why should we not take advantage of technology?           http://www.myspace.com/mechanicaldragonrecords

hm ive seen a lot of djs (cdj and computer guys)
and i stay to my opinion.

i know most of the time how the crowd will react to the tracks i play. its some sort of experience...
when a dj stays on an "energy" level its not the mixing its the track selection.
and i personally think its not necessary to mix up to 4 min. but thats just my humble opinion.
do what do you like. you will get feedback from the crowd and from djs or artists you like...

you guys forgot the Ipod Mixer? Last year Newark launched a very simple pad, but I´ve heard they are going to introduce a much more advanced version next year. It will cause a lot of debates, but it will be accepted and used afterall. For the ones who haven´t seen in yet, it works like a CDJ - only that instead of inserting the CDs you have to insert two IPods in the slot, read the Ipod and mix.

Peace and Love.

BTW, I think that labels should somehow sell WAV and accept payments other than credit cards. CC are incentives to a lot of free downloads, because many people (me too) don´t trust the web. If labels want to survive, they will have to adapt to new technologies and services.

Peace and Love.
