Question: do you think it's essential for a dance music producer to be able to Dj.. PROPERLY.

I heard that the opposite is true. Some DJs who started to create psytrance told me that after they start to produce music their DJ Sets quality improved a significantly.

I own poor man's "CDJ" decks. An old numark deck that does not have instant start. I knoiw that does not matter as long as I can "mix by ear", however, I have been writing down bpms on most tracks from cd's i purchase and that i think may drop into a mix. I am sick of doing this but it is good sp i have a general idea where to START with adjusting. Even still, the art of mixing by ear has confused me. i suppose i cannot hear the mix so well for some reason, i always become confused between the beats from the incoming cue'd track and current playing track but i really would like to learn this. any more tips out there for mixing by ear? i heard somewhere there is a distinct sound made when the incoming beat is barely off and vice versa.. like "fwoomp" sound versus "pwoomp" or something. i do not recall.. i know this sounds ridiculous but my ear is just not getting it so any extra advice will be muchappreciated.

Only practice wil help u wit that bro!

best is to mix two tracks repeatedly .. on and off beat. just spin the jog dial and make the beat of the cued track slip behind , on and in front of it. u wil train ur ears for to pick up the sounds.

raise the bass of the track in the headphones to maximum
now there is one normal kick (track playing) and one kick is "ooomph" (income track)

if it helps it meens your headphones sux - go buy senhizer hd 25 / sony dj700
after working with good headphones i know you shoud not compramise on it , its worth it specily once u go play in huge soundsystems

When beatmatching I generally start a track at the beginning of an 8 bar phrase, if the track in the headphones reaches the end of its 8 before the track that's playing, I know it's going too fast and just adjust the pitch in .7s till it's accurate.

I also kill the lows in the headphone track, so that it's kick is just a click which, compared to the doef of the playing track, sticks out quite nicely and lets me hear which track is which very easily.
