This is probably the best tip I was given. I took it and am still happy after 18 months.

Save your money. Don`t buy those kinda CDJ`s that will "probably" or "most likely" get the job done. Save a little longer and buy Pioneer CDJ 200`s and you`ve got your entry level setup. Bpm counters, effects if you use them. And most clubs and parties have CDJ800`s or 1000`s. May as well get used to the better stuff.

And always try and make time to actually use your CDJ`s. Im guilty of not using mine for 4 months and boy was I bad. But practise is fun. Keep up the great tips.
Cheers to all,

+1

but i recomend the 400's (with usb) or the 1000's just cause they are awsome... and personly even prefer the 100's touch then 200's but surely its just me (?)          www.sattelbattle.com

Hi guys, this is my first post, let me introduce. I've been listening to psytrance dayly for many years now and it and music is my passion. I want to learn how to make my own unique sound, i never played any instrument just beggining learning keyboard for my own and read sequencer's manual trying to understand how each function works, yeah sure it is a long road, but learning to use this softwares is not as challengin for me as learning music theory and keyboard (i think is a really important step if i want to make my own sound). But let's focus on the topic..

I have two decks and one mixer and i am mixing for a few time for fun, i quite understand how everything works but is still a long road to go.
I have a silly question...

When I m mixing, after i have adjusted the two bpm`s and set the cue point, when i m going to open the incoming music to the floor, first I open the crossfader (or the volume) to then play the incoming music when the first beat of the bar(of the current music) that i want to start the mix comes, is it wrong?

Or first should I have play the music that is incoming, make some adjustment if necessary and then when the next bar comes i open the crossfader?

Hope you understand what i m trying to say.

peace.

hardly understand hehe but if i got you right then the way i do it is listen in headphones that the mix is beatmatched and synced and only later start the actual process that dancefloor hear (ie to play with the faders , and i rather 2 faders in hands rather then 1 crossfader)           www.sattelbattle.com

i edit it, english is not my best language sometime is difficult to express what i want to mean, really sorry =/

My question is, just as an example, music a is current and b is incoming.

when i want to start the mixing process and open b to the floor, first should I play it(b) with the crossfader closed(b closed to the floor) and later open it to the floor when a bar changes? Or first should I open the crossfader and play it(b) when the moment that i want to start the mix comes?

hope you undertand now =]

yes this what i answer also before

i play A track and B track together while the fader is only on A track , listen in headphones if its good , then start to move the faders.           www.sattelbattle.com

Thanks. And the other way is used?

Do you open it when the next bar comes or in the middle of the bar or whatever?

always keep count 1.2.3.4 and mix/play on 1. rather to even count the hole 16 so evrything is in total match           www.sattelbattle.com

Why are you using two faders instead of the crossfader ? Better control with those ?

Yeah ideally, I'd say you want want to 'drop' the next track on the measure, at every sixteenth beat... which then would hopefully lead one into think about a whole segment of 64, and if you break that set of 64 beats by dropping a new track any where, even at the top of 16, a good listener will still sense that something has happened.
So... what to do... 'scratch' the next track right in at the beginning of the 64 beat segment? Have fun doing that with a button. I have the worst time with that, I can't get a damn thing on beat unless it is with vinyl.
Scratch in the next record AND rip that crossfader halfway across at same time! At the top of a 64 segment, listen for phase hitting right across a dance floor... use your fingernail to hit the breaks on the rim of turntable... or use your thumb to push down on the spindle... or give a little push by gently rubbing circles into the record label in the direction that the record is turning... and that is if all that is going on are beats - don't touch anything if there are tones playing out! What fun! Your slightest touch, touching tens, hundreds, thousands of ears! All this lost in the digital world...
What is left to art of mixing then? Hee, hee

a general question, what do people use more often when mixing, cross faders or straight up faders? the few times iv mixed on cdjs i havent used the cross faders so much, i like to leave the cross fader around the centre unless i want to compensate for sound levels without using the gains. i like leaving the corss fader in the centre so that both tracks share the same presence in the mix, but maybe its just me. also i thought it was a lot more consistant when the transitioning the lows from track a to track b if you know what im saying.           www.soundcloud.com/ishikawa

I'm using cross faders only when I'm playing old school techno and then I use alot of cross-cutting between tracks.           Kinetic Honda GmbH, Worldwide Supliers of Quality noise.

first the main thing to learn beatmatching is counting

1 2 3 4 get used to the beat
then learn to adjust the tempo play around as much as you can without bothering friends and neighbours

then start mixing the shit out of it just do it try mixing tracks as much as you can try to adjust the tempo and use the jog dial to play around so you get used to how it reacts
you will fuck up many times but at some point you will get it
then start to learn the tricks of the trade playing with the eq
and the learn the two ways of mixing old school with crossfader ( i still use crossfader most of the time if i can and it still works ) and new school use the volume faders of each channel on the mixer

then if you know all the tricks you can get lazy and use the percentage points to mix in 0.6 and so on
if you start like this you get used to it pretty fast and you wont be able to deal with bad equipment and broken mixers and there is plenty of that stuff out there

so if you learned the basics and something doesnt work or different mixer or what ever you can still do your job

i played in mexico on two boom boxes with no headphones plug and a old mixer for bands couldnt even listen to the next song had to play just knowing the tracks ,i played for 6h plus and people loved it
thats what i mean if you learned it the right way you wont have problems whatever you face

if you start by using the tricks you dont know the basics

so in my oppinion just do it and dont be afraid to suck in the beginning we all did

i never used the crossfader, i use individual faders.... i try to go on with the mix as along as it sounds in sync
