just finished reading the whole topic.some things I knew some I didn't
my question is : how can u manipulate the incomin bassline at a long mix(2 mins)without increasing dbs and f****n the whole output?
maybe a silly question but that's whats bothers me lately.

when doing blends (long 2 or more minute mix) you might consider the following:

1) either kill or reduce the bass level on cued track (the incoming one).
2) introduce the cued track into the mix (either using crossfader or volume fader). you can do slow or sharp drop, but no matter what, do it the way you feel is right.
3) let the mix roll, and adjust volume levels (either using gain control or volume fader), so that cued mix is not sitting on top of the master mix, but rather they are on the same level of loudness.
4) when the time is right (depends on the music structure you playing, but usually it's the begining of the new bar), flip the basses: bring in the bass from cued track while reducing bass from the master track (this usually is done simultaneously).
5) slowly or sharply (again depends on what feels right) mix out from master track, either by crossfader or volume fader, so the cued track is now master track.

i hope i answered your question.
if not let me know, what exactly are you trying to do.
cheers

I decided I may want to learn how to DJ mix

Can someone explain, in bright and simple words, how to do a beatmatch?

Thanks.

more than 3 years ago I started this thread, and only now I'm getting serious

I have two CDJs and started learning slowly. There really is nothing like that feeling that "IT WORKS!!!"

The discussion about harmonic mixing is pretty interesting but not relevant for me at this stage, so feel free to share more DJing tips...

You can also do some homework and before you go to DJ, just choose the track s you like and figure out the bpm and write it down, use mixmeister, so, you know the bpm of your tracks.           www.myspace.com/enertopiapsy

Question: do you think it's essential for a dance music producer to be able to Dj.. PROPERLY.
I have never wanted to learn to beatmatch, and although people may burn me alive for using some cheating beatmatching software when I play out, all my time and effort is in the studio - not in front of the decks, and I have no real desire to spend months learning.

I understand structures (a long time after I started producing) but I was annoyed to discover a friend who has no musical background whatsoever produce his first song in only a week with all the drops and buildups very 'commercial' and perfect. Obviously it wasn't a masterpiece, but it had all the elements in place. His only background is in DJing for years and years and he said it was easy. Got me thinking, ya know.

Or just read the dancefloor and go with the flow... Pick your tracks on the fly. And most important of all, have fun while you do it.

Good luck

hi...what about three or four channel mixing...i feel its more luxurious like you can have all these sounds running around inside the mixer and then you just like send two or three tracks out to the crowd and keep like a talk track beside for a lil surprise!!

and the sounds come out all jammy!!

Im playing with 3 decks at home now, have only tried it once in a party so far. It sounds kinda messy even if all 3 are matched and the eq is good. But playing with 3 players is excellent for mixing fast and it sounds quite cool to jump back and forth with 3 players..

I Have had a very similar experience recently. I have been writing (or as I call it "Learning") for the last few years and have only been DJing for the last six months or so. My writing improved significantly after learning and observing song structures whilst DJing.

One of my mates who has been DJing for years has started writing tracks in the last few months and is producing some really good music.

So to summarise my rather long winded answer, I do beleive that DJing improves track writing, mainly from a arrangment / structure perspective.           It's the bizzo.
