Easy + Fun gating with unlinked envelopes:
ok, so for years now I've been hearing this effect where people will take any noise and rhythmically gate it, but whenever I tried to do it it sounded stale and boring, but I've been having a lot of fun in the past hour with this approach...
first, take any synth you like, and generate a long single MIDI note say for 4-8 bars. doesn't matter what, as long as you can hear it, the goal at the moment is just to create the gating. here is a pattern to start off with:
http://img291.imageshack.us/img291/7404/unlinked.png
once you have your gating pattern written out (make it loop friendly...2/4/8 etc bars long), unlink your envelop and set the loop points down to the length of your gate pattern
at this point its gated but it still sounds boring, heres where the fun part comes. to get the different parts of the gate pattern to call and respond to each other you can either break up the MIDI pattern and write changes in that way, or you can add a filter (autofilter bandpass is awesome for this) and sweep that up and down...or both
works great with pads, formant noises, noise in general...

super stretching..
ever notice that when you timestretch an audio clip by x2 you can only do it so many times?
once you've reached your stretch limit, simply hit CTRL+J to consolidate your clip, and it will re-set all of the warping to default...
so for instance, say you time stretched a loop at your native tempo of 145 to 580, and you also transposed it by 12 semitones, after consolidation you will have a 145 tempo loop at 0 semitones, so you can really abuse the shit out of sound this way by continually transposing and stretching with whatever algorithm you want.

warp that shite! (or is it called timestretching? w/e)
IDK why, but for months and months i completely 100% ignored the warping algorithms for audio files...I'm not sure why, cuz they're really fun!
I think one of the reasons why is..I never see tutorials on this, and if I do its simply for entire tracks for DJ purposes, not creative tools for sound design
also, many of the functions aren't really interesting until you actually change the file in question by pushing those x2 :2 buttons to stretch the file
I'm really fond of Texture mode at the moment, it seems that pretty much anything sounds cool when you stretch it a couple times, then play with Grains and Flux - particularly good for glitchy shit if you drop the grains all the way down to the lowest setting then fuck with the transpose and the flux.
Unfortunately you cannot automate these settings (maybe clever dummy clips? idk still don't have my head around that), but you can just fuck around while recording to a resample track just fine.

Ever notice that when you slice an audio track to new MIDI track, all the samplers contained within that new MIDI track are set to -12 DB?
Instead of going through each one and resetting it manually, just reset one of them and then right click on the value - there is a 'copy to siblings' option there!

Fun with layered instruments + autofilter...
Basic premise is to build up a very rich potential spectrum of sound that might sound too busy by itself, but by dragging a bandpass through it you get a rich and varied sound.
So, basically just load up an instrument rack, throw in a couple instruments and make a nice busy mess of noise. EQ and mix them together if needed!
I had a lot of fun layering a bell patch, an aggressive distortion/noise patch, and two lead sounds on top of each other.
IDK what it is about autofilter set to bandpass, but I fucking love it. I've yet to find another filter thats as easy to use but is so fun to sweep through the frequencies.
cheers!

Ok, this is a friggin' brilliant idea. Just tried it out with about 5 layers of chaotic stuff through glitchy fx. Very very cool. |

Oh, added a layer of pingpong delay and really spacious deep reverb after, and it makes some really crazy cool swells/sweeps. Very fun. |

Put all of your instruments, audio, and MIDI effects into racks. You can set up as many chains as you want within a single rack, then use the chain selector assigned to a macro knob to cycle through them You can cram shit-loads of effects into a single rack at the cost of only a few % CPU.

Quick gating/rhythmic chopping tip...
for the past couple months when I wanted to gate something, I'd normally just delete portions of an audio clip (usually 1/16 or 1/32 quantize), or go into the clip envelopes and automate mixer volume.
that works great, but another way to do it is to take your bounced audio, and slice the audio into 1/16 or 1/32 notes then stretch it out so that the audio clip plays out its entire sequence, only with spaces inbetween the slices.
so, for example you have a 1 bar audio clip, if you delete portions of it its still 1 bar and portions of it are gone, but if you use the other technique you now have a 2 bar audio clip that plays in its entirety.
slightly different sounding!

nice thread doodz!
heres how i'm (fast and easy!) gating:
1.) download Neon Gate from Dream Vortex http://www.dreamvortex.co.uk/effects/ ... it's free, easy and perfect for this purpose!
2.) create an Audio Effects Rack and add as many Neon Gates as you like. i prefer 16 ... sometimes
3.) create the chain for this Rack
should look like this :
http://www.4shared.com/photo/XVk6MYyK/Gating.html
now edit your gates and play around with the chain selector or draw an automation for the chain selector and have fun
REMEMBER to save your Audio Effects Rack to use it (maybe varied) on other tracks again!!!
