Chi... Imagine that you are an artist. You give your soul, time and money into creating music
an suddenly someone comes and asks your question.

WHAT WOULD YOU ANSWER???

I have the same opinion as Mr. Brainstorm in his first post... as an artist, that's what i would think. But then again, if i had the talent, i would never rely on music as my only income... i always like to have a backup job. But that's personal

To be honest I am getting sick and tired of this topic. I do not recall seeing so many lame excuses anywhere else than in this scene when peopel try to convince themselves it's ok to steal music.

As an artist I of course want people to like my music and I did not get into making music to make money. I did it out of love to music ! BUT !!!!

After a long time in a studio working on a album day in and day out I do not even question my right to get paied for my work. People that say that musicians should be happy that people like their music and dont need money from it do not know what they are talking about !! It's the same as telling a person in a office that he/she do not need payment for the work because that person enjoy what he/she is doing for a "living"...... It's utterly B*** S*** !!!

And to people that say that we should get a second job...well we could do that but if every musician, painter, writer ect. ect. did that then you would not see the creativity and variety of art on this planet anymore.... a true tallent need to stay focused on his/her work fulltime and should be payed according to the work....... In what law does it say that artists should suffer and work for free?

And what about all the many many artists that never get booked for live gigs because they do not fit the "Top 10" music in this scene? They can not make a living out of gigs and the sure can not make a living out of their music as the situation is now!

So I say no to no.1 - Anyway music has been available long before mp3 and had no problem being sold and exposed to people around the world....that's why there's something called marketing and PR !!!!!

When I started buying music, I was 10 years old. Me and my friend had of course tapes (recording of the radio!), but when we decided this is more serious for us we started working cleaning the stairs in common houses and washing cars and with this we bought records, of course we recorded each others' records. But we did buy.

I think the magic formula is very simple, listen to what you want however you want- but if you like it, if the music gives you something- buy it, give back to the people who gave you. That's how I always did it.

So the answer to you question Chi, is that if I was an artists I wouldn't have a problem with you doing anything with my music, in one condition- if you like it- buy it!

Please do not attack me. I didn't say anywhere i don't buy music or that artists should get a second job.
What i said was that I (MYSELF) would also have a second job.
About the buying the music part, what i do is exactly what shahar said. I have hundreds of mp3, and i'm only legally entitled to less than 20% of them. Why? Because i like to try music before i buy. And when i download an album and listen to it, if i like at least half the tracks, i'll buy it. If i like only two or three tracks, i don't.
I only started this topic to see what the majority of the artists thinks.
It's nice to see that the majority chooses nș1 - the most noble and correct IMO.

Chi your question may be simple but it is very stupid.
Hey,No one can argue with technoligy,
programs like kaza soul-seek and the likes are all legal programs and no one can blame you for using them.hack i use kazza too sometimes.

But you really don't have to blow that out in people's faces - you are downloading music that was intended to be bought at the stores.
no need to be so proud of it.

I think Kristian said it nicely. Saying that you legally own 20% of the music, means you have 80% stolen, and I doubt you'll double your music collection anytime soon, so conservatively, you stole 3 times more music than you currently own. That's wrong.           http://www.myspace.com/Hooloovoo222

who cares
I have my brother's store

I pick few CDs from the store and listen at home IN THE BEST QUALITY .
When I like the cd , I keep it and pay for it (maybe I pay smallest price , but it doesn't matter for the artists or the labels).
and when the cd is bad I drop it back to the store.

and when it really bad , my brother return the cd to the distributor and it get back to the lame label that release it.

however it doesn't fair to download mp3s !
DJs should have originals much more than others , because this is their job !
and others should have originals BECAUSE MUSIC IS PART OF UR LIFE!
DJs take care , when u play illegal stuffs ,u in danger (just remember I said it )!

what if everyone of us will think positive about peace ?

chi> a quistion for you. would you prefer buying the music in a shop with a good quility recording, nice cd cover with shiny paper telling you more about the artist's music you like so much....OR, let the artist keep all the trax to himself/herself and only play it at parties, because there's just not enough people out there who cares about the scene enough to actually support it by buying the music????

i think that people (both listeners & artists) r not paying enough attention to a very basic thing in music.

after all it's a very small scene compare to other scene's & listeners are an important part of it as much as any artist because of that ! & thier actions will disign how it looks ...

if u copy your music ,KNOW, that by doing that you are killing it slowly !

if u love this music, this scene , the parties ,the people, the great moments that it gives to each & every on of us.
than know how to give back .
think about what u can do to keeping it alive & most important kicking !
& like everything in this world .... money keeps things moving. it's very simple fact , but often when it comes to music people forget it .

think about it...           visit us on myspace.com/yotopia

some people need to understand that STEALING does not refear only to material things...

...and as for the "first i test and then i buy" thing..
if you "test" something and you don't like it.. do you erase it from your drive?
that's a rhitorical question, there's no need to answer it...........           in search for an answer...
