your worst chill out stage memories

I've just been reminded of my worst chillout experience - I think I must have been trying to blank it from my mind...

There's a large pub in Bristol (UK) called the The Black Swan that's often used for parties as its got a few big rooms and can stay open until 6am. I was due to play in the chillout room at a party there - unfortunately the venue had problems with the Council licensing people (plus I think the owner was trying to squeeze more cash out of the party organisers).

Anyway.. the number of rooms the party could use got cut & it was decided to put the chillout in the front bar - away from the rest of the party. The front bar was originally to be just be for party goers.. then the owner said it would be for party goers from 11pm onwards.. as it turned out - it was just open as normal for the regulars all night...

I should point out that the regulars in the front bar were mainly young Afro-Caribbean lads who were bemused and not overly impressed that there were some hippies playing "music to send us to sleep, bwoy". Nobody had bothered to tell them that their bar would be the chillout room for the night... And due to a large courtyard with a big bonfire - nobody from the party bothered to come through to the front bar... The other guy playing before me was getting outright hostility - I managed to get it down to just indifference by playing a load of old reggae (or grand dad music as they called it!).

Anyway - after a hour or two of a frosty reception to say the least - we admitted defeat and decided to knock it on the head (the promoter was that stressed from other comings & goings - the party almost hadnt gone ahead- that he was just "er.. ok then") and leave the regulars to their bar and go and sit outside by the bonfire.. but very definitely my most challenging DJing experience - but at least we tried!

I was playing in a club, granted it should have been more upbeat but I was asked to play downbeat/ ambient.

Next minute the owner gives me a nasty rant, swears at me and hands me a commercial house cd from 1932.
TURN THIS SH*T OFF AND PLAY THIS CD.

I packed up and walked off.

awesome topic.

i was running a chillout room in the back of an underground breaks party in San Francisco 4 years ago.

the dj table was low to the ground, the dj sat on a foot rest essentially, and there was virtually no separation between the audience and the dj.

when i was spinning, a youngish lad extremely high on ectasy was laying right next to me. he started making gurgling sounds for a moment, and then turned to me and vomited all over my lap and leg.

it was revolting. i put a new track on quickly and made for the bathroom. the line for the bathroom had 12 people in it. i explained to the line that i had just been puked on and i needed to cut the line. NO GO. they wouldn't let me. i lost the plot and screamed at them that i was the dj playing right at that exact moment, they finally let me cut.

Playing at a party in London a couple of years ago, 15 minutes into my set the promoter comes in and says 'sorry mate, I need to take one of the CDJs for the main room'.....leaving me with only one deck!!!

Good thing I always keep a couple of my demo discs in my CD wallet           www.BarakaRecords.com/brij.htm

you spoiled euro send entheogenic over here (well, to canada for their sake) if you're sick of them. We'd all love to see them live!           http://soundcloud.com/rob-vector

oh, and this is a great terrible chillout memory from this past weekend: http://people.tribe.net/7ac27468-71ae-470e-bb6c-bd565b8c1812/blog?_click_path=Application%5Btribe%5D.Tribe%5B246ccaec-a374-4e81-b596-be6707e42331%5D

This crew (also from boston) basically took all our ideas for chill rooms but made it explicity clear that they didn't want to team up with us. At first we were slightly offended, and kind of made fun of them because they're really not very chill people....real static kinda vibe. but whatever, we decided to spin at their first major gig at a new york psy party because we're just all about making chillout the new thing.

After reading the shenannigans that ensued, i think you'll understand why we're now incredibly relieved that they insisted we not affiliate, lolol!!! Fisticuffs, police officers, and the end of a psytrance crew! talk about not chill!

oh well, i had a good time. DJ Morninglory and I played a sick tag team set of the phattest psychedelic beats around.....contrary to the mishmash of random electronica our adversaries spun, lol. Thank god we got shut down an hour early and immediately left!           http://soundcloud.com/rob-vector
