Why u use MP3?
In this format there is no quality, I know that this format is convenient, but why you do not pay attention to quality???
It is not pleasant to me when dj plays mp3 on a good sound system.
and mp3 no good influences sales record labels. (

I really don´t have the cashflow to buy all the albums I like. But then again, I am not a DJ hehe. Not yet, anyway.

Becouse mp3 gives me a full spectrum how an album may sounds like. If's suits my needs i order original CD becouse i fucking hate mp3 quality even if its pretty high 200kbps+.
Shops usualy put too shots track samples which often don't represent the whole track, while full lenght pirate mp3s do!!!
I don't feel guilty by having plenty of illegal mp3 becouse i also buy much music.

Luckily for you you are blessed with a hearing that top mastering engineers, DJ's and producers don't have.
Most think they can tell the difference when they are confronted with a blind test those subjective notitions always turn out to be a illusion caused by the placebo effect.

To answer your question.
I don't use it much and store my music as FLAC mostly, but the reason people use mp3 is that it's a way to reduce filesize.

I'm surprised to read a producer saying that MP3 doesn't affect quality. I've run some comparisons with my own music, and comparing the WAV with a LAME-encoded 320Kbps MP3 shows definite differences, particularly on the attacks of kick drums... my ears are ok, but by no means the best out there. MP3 is inherently lossy and therefore can never recreate the original waveform exactly. The differences may be increasingly subtle with higher bitrates, but they're there.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

Basically, there are quite alot conversations over this issue while there is no actual proof of Mp3 (256) being less qualited rather than Wav basing on practical hearing nor theoretical.

you can experiment it your self mate,
take a Wave file and convert it to mp3 320,256,190,96 ect...
( there are lots of programs that can do that such as Cubase, soundforge, aoudioCatalyst ect..)
now listen to the huge huge difference's between the mp3's 320 - 90 .
after you heared all of the mp3 files that you made listen to the Wave file and you will feel like your ears and monitors "opened" suddenly.
like Colin said: "MP3 shows definite differences, particularly on the attacks of kick drums"
its like the kick / drum's /hihat's... have no attack (start) like the sound is spread,
i have noticed that certain sounds i cant even hear... so its not only a matter of quality, some of the sounds you cant even hear so your missing an important parts of the experience of the track / song .
like trying to watch a DVD film on a VCD format , i cant be bothered with that
sorry about the offtopic

I have done blind tests myself, and I sure can't hear the difference.
But like I mentioned there have been tests with top mastering engineers, and there is extremly few who can hear any difference.
Most of them think that that can before they do the blind test, and that is due to the placebo effect.
Same conclusion was made in the article in mixmag, and the participants there was also surprised to find out that they didn't find wav to be the best sounding.

For sure it's not a bit-by-bit copy since it is a lossy format.
But that it "shows" in your wav editor does not mean that our ears can easily spot it.
It's the idea with lossy codecs to remove sound that would be masked and hence not be percived with our ears, but no changes is invisible in a wav editor or course.

I'm not saying you are wrong, and maybe you have done proper blind tests.
If you have indeed conducted the tests correctly I would be amazed with your hearing capabilities though I must say, because it is evidently extremly rare that people have that capability.

And to say it sounds bad when so few people can tell the difference if they really try is a bit exaggeration I would say.
What converters, amp or cables you use will have a more noticable inpact on your sound for sure compared to if it's an mp3 or not.

Colin it's quite obvious why Spindrift say that, check his online music store!

Hehe...of course it can seem like that.
But I can assure you that I don't care if people choose mp3, lossless or CD when they order from resonantearth.
The ones that would have bias would rather be the ones that only release on CD I would guess.
