nobody really does.
It's not like somebody was messing around in a labratory mixing up viles of sounds and suddenly one day he came up with the perfect combination and Ah ha! He discovered psytrance.
Who knows?
Maybe Sven Vath? Both teams played hard |

In a way it's like asking who started music.
There are a lot of different views on this, some say it happened in the 80s others think that it actually happened several 1000's of years ago

The reason this whole scene exists as a genre is down to an american hippy who has spent copious amounts of time in india playing music and embraced the electronic music as it came out of europe/america in the late eighties/early nineties. These parties in goa where they had been based as a christmas meetup point for travellers grew into goa trance......
I'm quoting myself from another recent post, this artist involved is Goa Gill, his musical attituse existed before dance music and he took what he found and moved in his own direction, no doubt with the in volvement with others but i understand he was the ideas man if you like....

Maybe that goes some way to explaining psy-trance, as to trance itself......humans have been here for a long time.....

who started the psy-trance scene...
I read about that, the first psychadelic club was in London (UFO), and psychadelic trance start with the evolution of the "techno color dream" and the consum of LSD...
the first dj/artist: I don´t know, and I don´t know if anyone knows, but the mayority says that YANKOVICH (green house effect / isr) is the guru, the first producer...

Nobody agrees of course. Some clues (for one who will agree, you'll find two who'll disagree) :
First DJs to have introduced electronic music in Goa : DJ Fred Disko & Laurent in 1983 (Goa Gil shortly joined afterwards).
First DJ to have introduced Acid House in Goa (which, after mixing with Indian influences and other sources, would become Goa Trance) : DJ Rey in 1987.
First Psy anthem : The KLF - What Time is Love (Pure Trance version), October 1988.
First Psy artist outside Goa : Raja Ram & Graham Wood (first productions in 1989)
First organizer outside Goa : Chris Deckker's Return to the Source in early 1993.

I think we've had this discusson before - but pretty certain that the Pagan parties predated RTTS. RTTS are just the best known, but not the first, of the early organisers as they were sill going strong until a few years ago. |

I've got a few friends who used to go to Pagan parties - so I'll ask them about it.
It also depends onw here you draw the line with psy/goa as in the UK Megadog were putting on psychedelic techno parties very early on as well - but that came more out of the coming together of the UK festival & rave scene rather than goa. |

erm.. had a look at that site and it has managed to ignore the whole of black dance music - which is where techno originated from - why no mention of Detroit or Derrick May etc which seems bizarre... I'll be polite and say the site is "selective"
(Not to mention calling the Stone Roses shoegazers and ignoring the masive UK dance music of late 80s...) |

John, they have a paralell Techno tree there, and they are quite right, Trance is white - Techno is black.
