If you love melodies, then I'd advise all of you 'bitchers & moaners' to listen to other forms of trance also. Try Mark Otten - Tranquility (Markus Shulz Remix) for instance and then listen to the great vibes AND good melody of that track! Markus Schulz is a master DJ and producer anyway, so you could do a lot worse than checking his stuff out. Or maybe you're afraid of other styles?? I'm not .. and I enjoy all sorts of trance!!           "Subconscious unravels at the point of death, and all time it has known erupts into a moment. As death extinguishes us, so we become it."

Melody is comeing back. Last week i was at a festival in Romania named " Trancylvanian Calling" and i was really surprised to hear all kinds of trance from Full-on and progressive too Old school and ambient. It was amaizing. It was maybe one of the best festival i was in last years. The big surprise was "The Old School" tunes. Lots lots of them !
From old techno-trance like "Sven Vath- The beauty and the beast" or Moby "Go" to old goa "Koxbox - Dr. Mesmer", Transwave,Etnica, Astral P...
You can not imagine how is to lisening again "The beauty and the beast" at 5:00 in the morning afther more than 10 years!
BOOM ! Respect to "Trancylvanian Calling" peopels and artists. They bringed together the old vibes with new vibes!
This is the future !

melody was imho never away. u hear melodies in morning fullon all the time....i dont understand why you are that excited fluosamsara...melody was always there in my opinion.
but...the melodies got more simple...lost their theatricalic epics...when listening to old goa tunes i get a feeling like when listening to classical music....wicked melodies twisting around you and constantly changing....and when i switch to some melodic fullon all i hear are 4 clubby bars looped. so yes i still miss melodies...or in better words...i miss how they used to be.

Nice point about Laurent Garnier, Le Lotus Bleu. Just by chance I only just read an article in Yomiuri Shimbum about his most recent visit to the techno scene in Tokyo, this June/04. He says that electronic music is fading and losing market all around the world.
He does not mention the psy scene, but we can feel that something is going wrong - if you look thru a telescope you see too much commercialism and drugs, to a microscopic level people who are in the scene longer than 10 years are getting tired of this trance thad is not trancing anymore.
To me it lost its charmings when it lost its melodies as well...so sad.

If you want to have a closer view, and some sincere ones from "one of the hottest scenes" in the world take a look on the commentaries some of my japanese fellows said about Vision Quest 2003(it's the one Morgana from VQ crew is thanking the crowd and the artists), in the Japan section - sure it attracted more than 9,000 people...but it was tasteful to a huge bunch of japanese trancers. Most of us saying it was a rock concert instead of a trance event.

Where has the melody gone?

Nice question.
peace and love.

I remember hearing my first goa-psy in 1998, a Blue Room Released compilation CD. I liked the psychedelic "intelligent" sound of the track names, so I bought it. The CD just floored me, completely took my spirit and exhalted me by the time it was finished playing.

I remember running around and trying to explain this magic new sound to my hippie friends: "it's called Goa Trance...it started in India....it's a kind of magical SPIRITUAL techno...full of heart and feeling....". (Where I lived, no one had ever heard of goa or psy trance.)

and they'd protest "but it's electronic music...made with computers and not instruments.....rave music!"

and I would say " no, this is totally different than jungle and club music....this is full of spiritual magic!!! you have to give it a chance!"

and more often than not, they were impressed by the novelty and psychedelic atmosphere of it.
-----
Now when I go to a party and they are playing Fungus Funk and Kindzadza and I see all the gritting teeth and harder faces....i just think that part of the scene has "evolved" into totally diferent than the values and expression what made me fall in love with this music...

the only reason I ever loved and trusted me soul to this music was because of the color and flowing emotions (which are most easily expressed in melodies) that made it once distinct....

I can't help but feel that some of the curent trends, especially the new "Evil" sound that is becoming popular in the NW USA...are less magical and a step back in spiritual evoloution than a leap forward...

I want to 'trust in trance' once more!

Right you are Kenji, and to Brett: I know we've had discussions before about the melodies, but listen to Protoculture and then say to me emotion and melodies have fled from the scene. Oh yeah, and if you'd stop searching for melodies only in psytrance, and try out other trance as well, you'd be surprised how much emotion is in tracks like these: Sattva - Echoes Of Silence (Way Out West Remix) and Mark Otten - Tranquility (Markus Schulz Coldharbour Remix) ... to name but a few... !!

If you look for melodies, in my opinion, you should check Tikal, Protoculture, Silicon Sound and Alternate vision. Blending old goa feeling with best production and grooves...           Edoardo @ Neurobiotic Records

Well Brett, you just expressed my feelings about trance. When I first heard and understood goa I thought that in 10 years time - now, I mean - it would evolve into something so spiritual that it would probably open a window which thru we would be able to do and feel things now that still are in the surreal realm: we would understand quantum, communicate using our brains only, realize finally that there are life out there and so on...
but unhappily it not happened and to my sorrow, many of my friends who had this same view and hopes just gave up the trance sounds.
Now to me it is in its "darker years" and I hope it will return to its spiritual path again. After all people are getting tired of this current hard sound that contaminated trance. And you are not alone, there are a lot of people doing good parties, with good vibes, playing old and new trance which makes you smile. Just look around, and don't give up.
I think the scene someday will depend on us, the old generation.

Peace and Love.

I fully understand what you mean in fact me and my friends are the same nowadays only few artists come up with Melodic psy and maybe i can give you some names of good music to help like Star-X, Silicon Sound, Beat Hackers, Cosma and then on the darkish side there is Prometheus and of course last years best dark album Frequency Surfer - Respect...All of these i like and there are more but as you say one album in a million is a really a good one you'll be lucky if you find it!!!

My dream is to produce the music that projects my soul will be there in a few yrs time...

See you
