there is a strange phenomenon that i encountered over my coastal holiday, a series of tracks which consistently made me wonder.... whats with all the old guitar riffs lately??? i dont get it. so im informed of an unwritten rule among trance artists that one MUST produce a track with a guitar riff... hence my primary question: pray tell why?

secondly in addition to my sudden susceptibility to all these metal fragments came the greatest shock all: a metallica track followed by a dire straits sampled track... i reiterate, i dont get it. and people loved it! on all the occasions i heard them. not to say that the initial hearing was somewhat daunting <though now i secretely admit to slowly accept the metallica one, im sure u guys know which one im talking about, who's it by anyways?> but i still feel conflicted on whether i actually want to hear bad 70's samples rearing their ugly heads again... what's the allure? where's the reason? who will explain?

Like you, when I heard to "acid for nothing" at first time...was boring, like the first time I heard S.U.N. Project guitar tunes...
And by the way, slowly accepting it...
My point is that guitar riffs are creativity crisis! Nothing beyond that...
I can dance it... Mescaline is a killer track!
but it is not my style...           "...Life must to be a preparation for transition to another dimension..."

a lot of people who evolved in to tance was once in a rock band or heard rock music so its kinda of a memory they dont want to forget so they combine this and other artists who make...make it simply for the floor

Usually I don't like guitars on psytrance tracks. Because most of the time they're not psychedelic, they just produce a good dancefloor response.

But I know there are lots of ways to make guitars sound psychedelic (specially using some weird effects on them).
So IMO there's a good side and a bad side of guitars psy tracks.

As long as it is some original recorded guitar i don't mind, but i don't like the old overused riffs that much.

Give me some deep, dirty drop b Korn style riffs with intricate rythms. Seems all the guitar riffs we get are pathetic cock rock riffs that sound like ac/dc.

i don't like guitars or anything that took from old songs or something, unless it's not a remix. anyway guitar that is made with creativity in it always welcome!
anyway guitars are cool, as all other sound and instruments that can be combined with this amazing music.           Without Deviation, Progress Is Not Possible.

guitar not psychedelic?!?!?!?!?

from Jimi HEndrix and Jerry Garcia

to

acid mothers temple and sonic youth the sound of a guitar has been manipulated and bent to scream with meaning and expressiveness, especially in the sphere of psychedelia           ein chadash tachat hashemesh. there is nothing new under the sun. --kohelet.

I dont think guitars belong in psytrance music, if you want guitars (hard and heavy) then listen to all forms of heavy metal . Most of the guitars I've heard in psytrance are only riffs which are done alot better and in theme with their music . Be it grunge, thrash, death metal etc .
Keep psytrance electronic...I say..

it still just baffles me, yes i get the point that people converted from a heavy metal scene, but really...dont u think some of those riffs stick out like a sore thumb, u know that moment when u turn and think: what the hell was that? what were they thinking?? and sorry i dont like classics come back < i have to go back to dire straits, i am shocked and stunned and at a loss of words with that sample>. think of something original! dont copy paste, but that goes into po-mo appropriation issues anyways...stay clear of that then... oh and ZeRo: yes i can see how jimi hendrix could do the trick, dont tell me dire straits <im awful i know but so is that friggin track!> consitutes as psychedelic just because they had the <hideous > idea of using guitars...

as timsensient puts it

Why the hell should artists limit the kind of sounds they used ??? The great interest of electronic music is precisely that you can make every conceivable sound a reality, from the violin to spacey effects, and beautifully mix them.

What's more for our scene, huge psychedelic effects can be derived from these sorts of mixes, using sounds sounding more distorted because they're put altogether.

Anyway, it seems the majority of people here was talking of cheap rock samples in psy tracks rather than innovative sound inspiration...

Go and listen to some death metal and come back and tell me the guitars are better used in psytrance .
It also depends what you define as innovative sound inspiration . From a guitar, I dont think so , not in psytrance anyway . What you define as innovative is watered down , weak metal . Thats all. Nothing new here .
Im also saying that they shouldnt limit their sounds, just not use the guitar which doesnt go with psytrance, the two clash, they dont mix beautifully. Thats the feeling I get when I hear the 2 together .

yup thats it.... sorry to say, there isnt much inspiration in bad sampling choices...

i see what ur saying Jeff, trance can make every conceivable sound a reality as u put it... guitars just make my hair stand on end... and not in the good sense. artists should not be limited to what sounds they may or may not be used, i just don see how riffs <REALLY bad ones at that> can be taken from recogniseable songs and converted into a trance track...
