i wish i could agree with you yossi...

but i can't... it's like saying to me the money to pay the police or the parks or the civil servants in a country are not paid by the people living there, but from the government...

i do agree though that the labels invest on artists and music... but they invest on buyers' love for music, too...

man , if you believe that to make a label is so easy , just go for it......but i think you have a bit more to learn before...and by the way , except taking your money , many labels just try to survive...because if you believe that the few money you give them , you are wrong , and second , the day you won t have any "copied" albums , maybe this day you will be allowed to talk about it...for now , the best thing you have to do is to buy the quality instead of the quantity...but don t forget that all the labels who were "famous" 5 years ago have all closed...matsuri , dragonfly , blue room , TIP (now it is TIPworld , which is different)and now flying rhino.......there is a reason for this.....which is that first , trance labels are not making as much money as you believe , and second , when you buy a cd in the shop , the money goes first to the distribution companies , and if they don t pay the label , the label dies........so excuse me if i "sound" agressive , but you can say bad things about music because this is a question of taste , but about labels , it s a bit more complicated...you can not blame all the labels for the mistakes of some of them....anyway.......what is this discussion for???

brainstorm, as much as i admire your confidence in yourself and your music (i didn't listen to it yet...) i don't think you can go to a record store and tell them: "hey! i got here 50 cd of my own music, you wanna buy them?"
but when a big distributer says he has 50 cd of the best upcoming artist in israel the store (or network eg. tower records) will buy them for sure.           REHAB is for quitters

Star Jelly:
hold a week please i finishing my new disc, i will send you all 3.

The Addict:
thats actually was my question from the beginning - WHY? why i cant do this by myself, does the music store buyes and sells "big distributor"s name or it buyes and sells artists music?

Except that, besides direct sale - you know, there's another form of business aka "realisation", when the store doesnt have to buy cds, while it may sale them and pass the money to artist only after the disc was sold

Talamaska:
1) i didnt say its easy to grow up a label and i dont think its easy to survive for them
2) i didnt say the label get a lot of money
and finally
3) i didnt blame labels - they do their work, they get money for it, i cant see anything wrong with this.
My point was: maybe not every band needs a label..

Brainstorm: yes, you don't need a label.
What you do need in order to sell your product is a registered company for taxation purposes (it can be an independant, one-man company, but it must be registered so you can deduct taxes). This is, by itself, a label - even if you spare the logo thingy. You will have your own promotion, your own deals with CD manufacturers and distributors (or not, whatever...), but the main thing is that you have to be a registered company.

About your sound production views:
try to remember that although you are using a computer with built-in sounds, you still have to know how to produce a proper, clean sound from it - just like any other musical instrument.
Many people can play Mozart or Rahmaninof by notes, or even write ingenious music themselves, but few know how to make the violin produce clean sound like Yehudi Menuhin or the guitar like Eric Clapton... Sound quality, whether from Violin, drums or computer is an essential part of music - its not about commericalizm at all.

Well I still havn't heard of BrainStorm so I guess this wasn't too much of a success after all ... Or maybe BrainStorm achieved his original goal: Only distribute localy. So what happend?

Haven't really seen any labels that pay royalties (%) after 3-4 months. usually it's after 6 months + 90 days. And that's if your so lucky to get any royalties at all

Advance is another issue. These days artists get less and less advance.

I say go for it Brainstorm. Indeed most of the things the labels do these days can be done by yourself and since most labels in our scene are made of pure bedroom amatures that got no knowledge whatsoever about marketing, PR, echonomics, distribution. publishing ect. then I see no reason why you shouldn't be able to do just a good job or even better as they can. Good luck

With the current distribution system, stores, distributors and labels are necessary as middlemen. As long as any form of middleman is necessary, there will be a label, even though these will probably get less and less formal the more everyone has the ability to make music at home.

I suppose it's inevitable that one day an artist will sell his own music to others directly and that will be the end of the story (the most direct/shortest path is usually the most efficient) - the moment distribution and access are free for all, labels will have to work for the artists in the more traditional form of the service industries.           http://www.myspace.com/Hooloovoo222

Musician, produce
Sound Technician, masterize
Label, decide, promote and release
Distribution, distribute
One, even most talanted man can't do it all. There is no middlemen is this process, everybody does their own task. As music done by non professionals, other tasks also. So here is the result.
Label decide whereas music is ready to be released, based on previous sells, market sells, standart of quality music and kind of music. Then send to mastering and cover design. Promote and organize parties for you to play (for them to sell). I think if we all think a bit we will find much more tasks label managers should do.
I can't imagine 200 artists flooding stores with CDs which probably noone won't buy. Then everyone will loose.

Tsabeat is right,

Some labels might pay you a small amount of money for releasing a track if they pay anything at all, but the release will bring gigs to the artists and it in the gigs all the money are!!

Some artist get from 500 up to 1500 euros for playing at a party, and what label can pay that for a track on a compilation?

The labels are great for releasing the music and getting the artist well known!

Sad that all people think of is money anyway, if i would make music i wouldnt care if it sold platina as long as some people enjoy my work
