Yeah all basic stuff . One eventually evolves their way.for me it was turning off the mixing side an switching on the creative arrangement side .. but like I said when back in newb days I would loop small bars an learn my eq's etc so it's not a bad a thing as it all based on your intent and dependant on it..

Just have fun

Little bit off point here, but there is one thing that I would like to add, its that to make the loop sound like one being it's important not to process every sound individually and expect it to sound great together. (each timbre will confuse ur ears)

Start with a nice full kickdrum and process it until its soothing. Then add a bassline- if you're synthesizing it, be sure that you tweak it from init while the kick is playing in the background. You kinda intertwine them especially when it comes to EQ'ing the bassline. Only the kick is processed individually. Everything after that is adding to the loop.

Listen to the K&B loop while previewing snares and hihats and find the one that sounds great with the loop.

Mixing part of the brain involved all sounds I find mention individual (although it still has to sound great on its own also, trickery can be done though) , I use to get everything sounding great together before my track was Done - problem with that was I'd be board shitless by the time I be half way there and have no energy left.. no disrespect but in deep that we veering off ,let's remain on point with this ancient thread yeah and try keep it close to what Orange and speakafreaka was saying in regards to dj Jones.

Braking bad habits, routines and approach my sequencer differently is what needed to happen for me. - I read this post years ago - although like i said I learnt how to mix well by looping small sections of elements so i guess it wasnt a bad thing either.. so there we go, intention concept and motivation

I think it's best to have the main elements properly mixed from the beginning, because you're going to need it like that for breaks and everything that involves some post-processing on the whole thing. Being aware of this, having mixed entire tracks before comes handy, 'cause you know there's only so much space in the mix. You need to focus the main energy up until 200Hz, or something similar, so as to leave space for the leads and everything else. So even when sculpting the kick, you must be aware of that. Kick and Bass need a very similar spectrum print to. But you really must control it. I mean, just enough so it doesn't get lost in the mix, but not as much as if it was a lead, otherwise it's really to much. Even if you make everything else depend on that kick you have. The kick is something to go along with everything else.

Having said this, I wouldn't say endless tweaking leads to a good sounding mix. It's more about controlling things first. Some frequencies peaking to high? Make sure you tame them. But be gentle. Keep it musical. Just watch those frequencies that would otherwise be painful in a big sounding system. So it's more about watching the levels and controlling some nasty frequencies during production. Also paying a lot of attention to how you trim sounds, your fades and stuff like that. The actual mixing part should be done at the end, yes. But things should sound decent even before that. I just feel like this is different from obsessing about sound quality and how a given sound should sound compared to references, or being to anal about your notches and little tweaks on a small loop, like some of you are saying. We all go through it. Much more attention is needed in the arrangement - that should hopefully become gradually more aware of the spectrum, your stereo image, and everything else you learn really, hopefully even without having to think about it much. The thing is doing it 'till the point you don't have to think about it much. Developing good habits.

sorry my apologies kick and bass being the foundation is the only thing I mix first..
this being from many years back trying new gear and plugins out I mean , learning how to use them and mix is where ive been mostly, where as others don't bother a tall even when finishes, so like I said I am glad in a way I did loop2learn

we find our ways in the end - like a plant to the sunlight

your blocking yourself by thinking i can't make a track ! music is freedom and you missing some feedback . I start with a idea like a pad or kick and bass , and build sounds up ! ( blocks ) the most time i know by then what my main part gonna be , then i make a 16 bar loop in my arrangement work flow and duplicate it till the desired track ending .
Then i start to make a intro 33 bar for example a start were you kick and bass will be introduced ,break hi-hats ,claps ,some atmospheric pads , just build up ,see it like this you know how your main gonna be so the art is to build to that moment . also try to listening to some of your favorite artist and just listening whats happening . hear how they build up their track . Or aka tripy have some online courses on google hangout , check it out peace bro
