So after a small Goa party in Germany an acquaintance of mine (a dj and the name doesn't matter here right now) got shot in the chest with a crossbow and died at the scene. After writing down my dismay about this on my timeline in Facebook some people also wrote about their experiences that included some stabbings and other violent shit.

Any such story even 10 years ago would have been absolutely unbelievable, now it seems to become more and more a norm.

When I set out and found the Goa scene in 1986 on Anjuna beach in Bardez, Goa, there was no such thing even thinkable. Now it seems to creep into the international scene more and more.

Let me be clear, I have no illusions about any grandeur and am not connected to any so called spiritual egos in this scene but happenings like these have me questioning whether I should quit the scene for once and for all.

All too often violence seems to be connected to a lethal combination of artist/promoter/spiritual egos and the seemingly endless intake of heavy drugs and also their combination with alcohol.

Some people in the psy scene (even artists) threaten people with physical violence who don't conform to their political ideas, even making sure to ban those people with different political ideas from entering Israel and performing there.

Possible solutions: a door security check TSA style, with heavy security detail on and throughout the party seems an option that would turn most people off such events, the idea of a party being a certain promotion of freedom, not control.

A general policy to leave your opinions and political shit at the door when you enter a party. (Yeah, try again buckwheat)

Other solutions would be to boo out and ban individuals who don't seem to know when it is time to stop taking certain substances, and who promote certain substances, not sure if anyone would be left afterwards...

Is it time to clean up the psy scene?

Is it time for me to drop out of this colorful caravanserai of fellow travelers, even though I am nearing the completion of a whole set of psy diamonds I have been working on for nearly two years now?

I am seriously wondering here...

I am wondering, how this scene could become so very low???

sad to hear these stories...
but it's not the right answer to quit the scene because of some nutters if you otherwise still like and want to contribute to it.
i think there's very little one can really do to weed out this kind of behaviour.
people are acting out violently these days because of all the stress and uncertainty in every day life.
that's why it's spreading into places you've not seen it before.
just take some distance for a while and concentrate on music. then get to know the organisers and crews who are like minded with you.
ask second opinions from fellow artists who've been playing the same festivals and/or parties you've been invited to.
word gets around which events still have a good vibe and which don't. that's the only advice i can give to you.

I dont know why but this scene as it can atracts very nice minded people it also atracts a lot of very awfull people, specially promoters.

The trick is to map very well who is who as Outolintu described.           "The dedication to repetition — the search for nirvana in a single held tone or an endlessly cycling rhythm — is one of electronic music's noblest gestures."

i will only comment on the words ever so gently directed at me -

fake hippies promoting peace and love while at the same time taking cynical and disgusting views and promoting them is as unacceptable as the violence you describe.

you say you are against bullying, to me the worst kind is "bully diplomacy" people who speak with big words and are all proper and well mannered, but in their hearts are mean, cynical and hypocritical. maybe one should look first in the mirror before checking what is wrong with the world.

the fact someone has a rasta and makes some good tunes does not make him a good person automatically. who we are is what we say and do and how we respect what is going on with other people we interact with and in their lives, without thinking we know it all or our opinions are better morally just because we read a book by osho.

someone who hates israel and what it stands for simply does not deserve to come here party with chicks get drunk and have people rock his music.

if i thought all germans are nazis and the german government is a fascistic genocidical entity commiting war crimes against humanity, should i be deserving of rocking out with the good people of germany?

i hope for the guy's sake he learned at least a small lesson in humility. we all have problems and we all have lives and i don't apologize for calling something like i see it or for not having rastas and rainbow t-shirts - that does not make me a bad person. i know my moral compass and trust it just as you trust your own, and if i see what i consider as an injustice and chose to stand up against it that is my right - just like it is your or "his" or anyone's right to their views and actions.

i know you will probably answer, but you will not consider my words and will not change your way of thought. this time i will stay true and hold myself to this comment only and not start a debate here.

whatever man. have a nice life.

to be perfectly honest, I'm not too fond of the government of israel but I love israeli people. does that mean I can't party there too? do you see where I'm going here? You can't equate the government of israel to the people.

Forget the trance scene, its everywhere you look whether in real life or in the media. People are getting aggressive , there is very little tolerance left or is running out faster than people are accumulating it through yoga meditation, egos are fragile. People getting killed everyday in the name of religion or because of some bullshit propaganda. Its a highly selfish world out there. Money is all the matters now. Good people /vibes matter but only to an extent. This is the reality.

The trance scene is just a mere fragment of what goes on in the real world. Its becoming even more difficult to live up to the thought "be the change you want to see" , i mean how is that even possible with so many uncertain variables in the mix... violence and aggression is becoming second nature to elements who don't think twice before reacting the way they do .. we are living in crazy times. Nothing much that can be done except trying to reform yourself and hoping people change by seeing the goodness in you.

As far as attending/ organizing parties is concerned you cannot filter a crowd according to their appearance/ political preferences/or whatever . A situation can always get out of hand when two egos clash especially in a party setting like a psytrance event when people are not thinking too clearly and passions/emotions are highly charged . Let the party info flow through word of mouth so only like-minded folks get to know .

So I'd say don't quit even in the face of hopelessness and lack of PLUR .

unfortunately this things happend not since yesterday.. even 10 years ago there was shit like this. Once on an underground psytrance event that I wont forget for this bad happening the dj has been beaten to blood and the bad spirits run away with turntables & mixer. This was shock...
On another I saw one guy was beaten without any weapons kicked in head brutally as in nightmare.
Fuck it plur utopia is nice..but shit like this unforutnately are happening. Best times were in the 90s the plur culture was really working. Dont know if there is a solution for today. Even without weapons brutality is possible and bad spirits who want to make trouble are possible since goa is not really any underground anymore.           https://soundcloud.com/shivagarden

Yaron, my words were actually not directly aimed at you, or did you actually physically threaten the dude with the rasta locks?

But the fact that you mind the words so much speaks for itself, especially given what I am going through in regards to a friend who got killed.

So are you saying I should look in the mirror because I started this thread? I am sorry that you find my words offensive, but quite frankly I don't give a flying fuck if you feel offended or not, because I got my own shit to worry about, such as seeing a friend in my mind with an arrow in his chest, lying on a lawn and dying, shot by a psy trance promoter. Fuck I dreamed about this shit even... maybe it's all cool for you, sorry, it is not for me.

I have quite a few friends who are Israeli citizens and who live in Israel who don't like the Israeli governments actions, should they be evicted from Israel too? You better get the fuck on it, you want names??? Go Phish!

While the idea of spreading a party through word of mouth practices is initially an interesting one, we all know that this is not how it works. Nowadays to get people to come to a party, it's more through social network sites such as facebook, as well as through other internet means and I suppose that in itself makes violent people unavoidable.

And that in turn makes me shy away from people more and more, not just in the trance scene, but in general.

The trance scene was not always a reflection of what is going on in the rest of the world, but it certainly is becoming that way more and more.

As to people changing when they see the goodness in me, not sure this actually works, nowadays it seems to be the good people who get kicked in the nuts, and quite frankly in my dealings with people I have found it to be that way all too often, one is good to people, opens up, is honest and shows heart and gets kicked in the face for it.

Yeah, it's true and it's not just in the psy scene, but it sucks to have a beautiful idea shattered...

On another note, the German media is now speaking all over the place about the

"Crossbow Murder that happened after and also at a Goa party"!

This kind of shit is not only a crying shame, it actively destroys the scene, I doubt cops will be very easy on Goa parties throughout Germany anymore!

So as a promoter (not only in Germany) but everywhere else I would right now be seriously thinking about steps to take to avoid violence and implement those steps as well!

Another incident like this in Germany and you can kiss all the open air festivals there good bye!          Upavas - Here And Now (Sangoma Rec.) new EP out Oct.29th, get it here:

I wonder where it happened I have nothing heard, also there is really nothing about it in the german media.

A good organized party must have a security team that is the only thing that could make it safer although absolute no guarantee.
