I am disappointed.

Kali Yuga’s release was a source of light since my recent detachment from the psy scene, it offering an album I would hold on to, put the new age into perspective.

Gil’s eclectic mixes have always meant the world to me, ground breaking and full of moments and a brief epiphany.

Having meticulously prepared a boom, I slipped the cd in, made sure I sat at the epicenter of this ’10 Richter scale earthquake’ and pressed play.

Xikwry Neyrra was surprisingly good as a first track. Adhering to baba’s post tribal post industrial influences; this raw, energetic and aggressive Huichol banger rocked the boat.

Noise Gust bought the house down with a bloody brilliant track, a true cerebral over process with insane synths and a deep sound reeking of psychedelia. A definite must-hear-favorite track featured in the album.

Fatal Discord was enjoyable with its deep bass-line and plenty breaks. A typical-to F.D structure with dissonant sounds it was to say the least extremely danceable.

Far East Ghost was…..ahem.

Gil’s mixing skills were always suspect. True to old school dj tradition the focus is on his Mafioso track list and a meta physical journey without any glaring glitches. Mistakes in live performances are forgivable with the man delivering 12hrs plus sets with amble panache. But in a 70min mix set?...no f-ing way!

The F.E.G track felt imposed. Not to mention the poor transition. Giving the tune time to settle in, I found it to be good in patches but later I was shell shocked once the guitars kicked in. The riff was lame and cheesy and a huge disappointment.

[Disclaimer: I have nothing against guitars or rock music. Of late I prefer indie rock over trance. IMHO skazi has forever scarred my perception of its use in psy.]

Having already lost my sense of balance and judgment I ventured into the Khaos Sektor vs K Lapso track. It did make up for lost time. Great changes in bass-line, nice synths and a nice ‘night time’ track. Though I found the atmosphere typical and inadequate. A great effort though nothing ground breaking.

Enichkin owns the set! Whooooa! All mistakes are forgiven with this quick visit to eternity. I bow down to you oh crazy Russian kid! No words for this one just plain eargasmic and spiritual and psychedelic to the core! My favorite track in the set and of the season.

Nommos features way down in the track list. A great track too though correct me if I’m wrong, the vocal samples (though beautiful and someone please indicate where it has been lifted from) simply didn’t fall into place with the track at times. I still can’t figure out the precise problem here, I think the track would have been far better without them. Though the track is pretty good and baba runs pretty fast for his age. Filled with the usual nommos sounds, atmospheres and djembe its good to see at least a few things don’t change.

Furious and Cadans with their unmistakable bass-line prove to be a nice and speedy head-trip. Though I feel Furious’ Supremacy had better tracks than this contribution not to mention the brilliance he showcased in Uncanny Beats. Nonetheless, crazy and far out this track is a definite dance floor killer though at times too ‘acceptable’ to feature at this point in the album. A nice groovy track replete with tempo changes as is common in many tracks above.

Kashyyyk comes in next with his alien, dissonant and angular rhythms, that tunes us up with extra terrestrial frequencies. Very next generation and unique, Kashyyyk tweaks it up to the mark.

Zigurat on Quantum Mechanica takes up where kashyyyk left off furthering the alien sounds, truly next level and brilliant. So complimentary to the last track that I feel they must be heard in conjunction always! A perfect closer to the kali yuga flavored set and a kick ass last track! Another definite must hear feature.

In Concluding

In the end a great set, effort and respect for all those involved. Many have made it into the ‘gil collective’ for the first time with these sets acting as historic records documenting the entire evolution of goa trance.

The sets in the past have been distinctly different from each other in the sense of departure and re invention of trance music as we see it. Kali Yuga tends to fail in this aspect in comparison with Karmageddon to Worlbirdger and might prove to be a disappointment for many. Stress on horror and metal imagery contrary to tribalesque alien sounds in more than 3-4 tracks in the set seems to be devolution to say the least.
IMHO devoid of the f.e.g track, slight tweaking of the nommos track and a harder furious track would have made this set far more enjoyable. Constant tempo changes seem to spoil the momentum more so if used as a tool to switch tracks. Also Sonik Scizzors will be missed.

Mixing was ‘visibly’ better in the second half. Quality of production was top notch. If you don’t agree get a better set of cans or lower the ‘bass boost’!

In the end I’m still holding on to the quantum frogg VA Prakriti Engine as my favorite in recent times. Now I turn my gaze and expectations to Ghreg on Earth’s latest T3. Let’s see….

Tracks in order of favoritism:
1.Enichkin – A visit to Eternity
2.Noise Gust – Over Process
3.Zigurat on Quantum Mechanica – Bhavatarini
4.Kashyyyk – Mor 1
5.Xikwry Neyrra – Tierra de Shamanes
6.The Nommos – Kali Does the Dance
7.Fatal Discord – Crucial Night / Furious and Cadans – Something Speacial
8.Khaos Sektor Vs. K Lapso – Evil No See
9.Far East Ghost – End of Machine Age

Album Rating: 3/5

More like 1/5. I think he has done great disservice to himself/his reputation by listing 95% of these tracks on his "divine dozen." Nothing seems remotely divine out here sorry(except that the CD ends finally). Gasp.

Mixing was typical Gil, but some of the tracks here are real standouts. Furious & Cadans, Kayshyyyk, Xikwry Neyrra and Fatal Discord are all banging, and I didn't mind the Far East Ghost track either.

3/5 is definitely all it deserves. Nothing groundbreaking at all. At all.

Not a night time journey for me, more of a collection of tracks of already established and well known to everyone artists.

the thing that really dissapointed me in this mix was F.E.G. track, didnt match in this compilation.

Also missed Sonik Scizzor..

Xikwri Neyrra, Noise Gust, Zigurat On Quantum Mechanica, The Nommos & Kashyyyk are nice

im agree about other furious track not that one hehe
