I need a new Studio PC, so did some checking here in the forum and saw that http://forum.isratrance.com/kaz-s-studio-pc-guide/ is now 2 years old,. Great work there but maybe an update would be nice.

My idea: spending around 600 Euro max for just the PC. With SSD. 1 TB Hd. Very important is the no/low noise for me, rather spend less money on CPU-power then have noise. Bang for the Buck like Kaz calls it. i3 or i5.

I am using a Motu 828 mkII firewire, TC Powercore firewire, Virus Ti on usb and other usb devices like Novation launchpad etc. Also want to put my old UAD-1 card back in an extra PCI-slot.

Hope some people can update us. Orange seems to be the man for this.

thanks in advance.

if you buy from amazon or some local shops on your area its possible the same stuff will cost about 50e less.
add to this a case for about 50e and you are done.

if you can stretch the budget 100e more than we go for a intel based solution. (wich i recommend since it will give you more performance.)

Thanks for your help, but aren't we missing the cooling and hard drive in your overview?

with 600e there is so much we can do to build a very powerfull pc. a 1tb drive is like 80e more and a 40+e for a good cooler and you are 120e more than your budget.

with 600e and the cooler and hdd we go to a much lower spec pc.

either upgrade your budget or you go on the 2nd hand market. if this is the deal tell me and i will make you a pc from the used market.           http://www.landmark-recordings.com/

if you stretch it for 100e get a hdd and save some money for a decent cooler for the cpu.

my opinion is if you can to go for intel core gen 3 ivy bridge cpu since it will give you more performance but will cost also more.

the middle solution is something in the i7 2600k its very powrfull and will not break the bank so much.

all in all choose gigabyte and intel for the heart of the system if the budget allows it.

and for ssd look in the samsung 830.
its very solid.. maybe not the fastest in terms of raw numbers but very stable and the noticeable difference with another faster ssd is next to nothing in real world working scenarios.

Hi Vipal!

I had almost identical requirements as you (Virus Ti on usb, low noise, UAD - 1, UAD - 2), plus i really needed the extra CPU-power. I decided to skip SSD and this is what i ended up with:

Case: FRACTAL DESIGN MIDITOWER DEFINE R3 USB3 BLACK
Mobo: Asus P8Z68-V PRO, Z68, Socket 1155, ATX
CPU: Intel® Core i7 2600K, 3.4GHz, 8MB (Turbo mode 3.8Ghz)
RAM: CORSAIR 16GB DDR3 VENGEANCE LP PC3-12800 1600MHZ CL9 (4X4GB)
HDD 1 system: WESTERN DIGITAL VELOCIRAPTOR 300GB 3.5" 10K RPM SATA/300 32MB
HDD 2 Audio: WESTERN DIGITAL CAVIAR BLACK 1TB 7200RPM SATA/600 64MB
PSU: Corsair TX 650W V2 /80+ Bronze
DVD±R: SAMSUNG DVD±R/RW/RAM DL 22X SATA BULK
Cooler: Noctua NH-U9B SE2

This costs around 800 Euro but if you replace my CPU, the extra HDD 2 and less memory you will end up with about 600.

The number one part for low noise was the case, it is very low noise. I kept all the sound absorbing material ON.

Two things to bear in mind though. In order to get my Virus to work i had to deactivate USB 3.0 in my bios settings and get an powered USB hubb like this:
http://www.amazon.com/Belkin-USB-Plus-Port-F5U307-BRN/dp/B000NAXC6G/ref=pd_cp_e_2

The Virus is extremely sensitive for non powered USB and it will only work if it has its own PCI Bus/lane.

So far this PC have delivered, i am very satisfied
Hope this helps you!

Let's say I want to buy a Dell computer because they allow to spread the payment over 12 months.(because I spent my money on a Slim Phatty yesterday )

What sort of configuration they offer would be about equal to the intel configuration you made?

Congratulation to the Slim Phatty. I don't think you can get a equivalent configuration with a dell computer. Mostly because of the motherboard. But just start to save 50 euro/mouth and after a year you do your build.

Sorry but can't help you with this one, somebody else maybe?

Ok, so maybe I want to buy a laptop then.
I know I'm being a bit annoying, but I'm really a noob regarding pc's and stuff.
But what laptop would be equal to the Intel configuration?
How much would it expand my budget?
All I really wanted to pay is about 600 Euros, but I would have to take the extra costs if it's not too much.
And besides the pricetag, what are the cons of getting a laptop instead of a desktop?
I intend to hoop up my Xone DX, Virus Ti Snow and Moog slim phatty and a midi hub.

In my opinion there is no PC laptop (yet)that is equal to the Intel configuration i mentioned above. I would recommend a MAC if you must go portable for stability. But of course, this also depends of what DAW you are using. I know that Ableton and Cubase goes on both platforms.

I recently helped a friend of mine to configure his newly purchased PC laptop. He had a lot of problems with it. Nevertheless, he paid about 1000 Euros for that laptop. There was nothing special in that laptop, i5 processor of some sort, cant remember.

At the end of the day it all comes down to what motherboard, processor and hard - drives you choose, they are the key components.

I don't think you will get anything good for 600 Euros. However, if you do your own build and use the same principle as for the Intel configuration maybe something good can come from that. I never built a PC laptop, you will have to ask somebody else about that.
