And I'm necroing this thread because I've made a Reaper plugin for this. Here's the full description: http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?p=890571
Download here:

Hope you find it useful!

Sure , here you go:

It starts with a simple percussion loop from Maschine, then two modes of operation are demonstrated. In the first part, FX tails are cut abruptly, giving a "choppy" feel. In the second part, FX outputs are summed together, which sounds kind of dubby. The neat part is that both modes use the same routing.

I also uploaded a demo project here: http://stash.reaper.fm/v/11565/channel%20switcher%20demo.rpp

The actual FX are not included, everyone's are different anyway ))
All the routing is set up for you, just drop some audio and FX and go crazy.

have fun!

That sounds friggin great mate! esp the second half. The d/l link was just a page of code, am I being really stupid?
Also, can I configure this in FL too mate or is it just for Reaper(I know nothing at all about Reaper).
Thanks a million!           https://soundcloud.com/craic-addict

Thanks mate! Funny, I like the "choppy" stuff better

The plugin is written in a scripting language called JS (short for "Jesusonic", not to be confused with Javascript . Reaper has built-in support for JS plugins; other hosts may use a VST wrapper called ReaJS, available here: http://www.reaper.fm/reaplugs/

However, I'm not sure how well it will work in hosts that don't have Reaper's advanced routing features. Does FL support multi-channel tracks for example? I've no idea.

so can't this be done with racks/dummy clips in live using only two channels?? I'm going to try it.

You should be able to do this all within one drum rack as drum racks have their own internal sends/returns.            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

Sounds a lot more complicated then it should be tho.. Couldn't you just put 1 audio track with your loop. Put a bunch of effects on that channel then bounce in place. Then just mute/unmute whatever ever effects to make different versions. Then go Edward Scissor hands on that bitch !

Just doesn't seem necessary to make a routing spaghetti for something that can be done on 1 track with no routing at all.          Bookings : Reptiloid@hotmail.com

^ yes there are lots of ways to go about doing this especially if you know your DAW. I do what you suggested basically, but by using the FX rack in ableton.

I think when he wrote this tut DAW workflow was a bit more limited maybe? idk i just made that up but it could have been the case.           --
