Ok, a few of my experiments inspired by this thread (using Ableton) have been uploaded to my freesound site. They won't be available until they post them. Not sure when that will be. Hopefully tomorrow?
Here's my freesound page:

The clip based FX in Sonar are cool but I don't really use them much for this type of thing. My usual work flow when doing FX variations on lines looks like this:
- Put some effects in the effects bin of a track and tweak to taste.
- Right click and freeze track.
- Drag the frozen wave to the bottom of the arrange view. (This creates a new track with the frozen wave)
- Unfreeze original track and change the effects (or the effects order or whatever).
- Rince and repeat.
- Arrange to taste.
In no time you have many FX variations on the same line.

Interesting. Does it do that for effect inserts in tracks? I know that the new VST 3.0 that is going to be in Nuendo 4 doesn't actually take up cpu usage until an audio signal is actually going through the plugin.

Question:
If recording in from the busses, as discussed here, will this pass through my soundcards AD/DA converters?
will i lose quality using the onboard of my mac to record in audio which uses logics bus inputs?

Nice topic here, mate.
For reason users as mentioned before, this can be achieved easily and with real time tweaking - pattern switching possibilities via combinator
setup for example could be:
create a combinator
inside combinator you create 14:2 mixer
and dr.octorex for multiple rex loops or a sampler for waves and shit.
you take your signal from source device and feed it to spider audio merger - splitter thus having but not being limited to four identical signals witch you connect to different mixer channels.
you then connect different fx chains to mixer sends and open them to each channel according to your taste
then you can create multiple matrixes put them to bipolar curve mode and create different curve patterns to open and close your mixer channels, automate pan and shit (you also can do this with automation but...) when you create multiple corresponding patterns in your matrixes you can switch between them real time using combinators programmer - for example assign pattern switching to one of combinators rotaries which you then can control real time with your midi controller. as you have 3 combinator rotaries left you can assign them to tweek other parameters such as flangers and/or phasers lfo rate, switch between rex loops or pretty anything what you think of
