Yuli - if that's true, explain to me why goatrance isn't music?
Tim Schuldt uses pretty nifty chord theory, Koxbox used a lot of very complex ideas (Koxbox - Stratosfear has sooooo many good abstractions there), and I'm not going to start bringing you other examples.
Sure minimal trance is only beats and ideas, but that's the beauty of that specific style - it's 100% raw ideas, so it has it's own beauty.
On the other hand, I can shrug off jazz as "no thought at all, no control, just improv improv improv all the time, when will they do something INTERESTING there?"
every style has it's ups and downs, but giving a generalization (like I just did) is wrong. No matter what music you like. |

From the whole goa genre there are more than a few albums that I would c as ' Music ' btw mine not included.. And the rest.. well look ;o)
It's not very hard to take one bar divide it into 16's and experiment on it till something nice shows out and use that riff no key on the keyboard was pressed while the riff was made.
That what I call lack of music and many trance artists use that method to create their tracks. It's not bad, but I, for myself want a little more than that. ;-) I want to PLAY it.. ;-) Then it becomes music ! |

I really don't want to get into this subject too much coz I am too much a part of this scene to do it but I have too big a mouth ( Keyboard ;-) )
Don't u think that any kind of music that lets u see it's soul mostly when u r high ( i.e E's, LSD, KOK and the rest ) misses the point a little? AS A MUSIC... When u listen to U2 u don't have to b in that special state of mind to appreciate it really.. but when it comes to trance, esspecially to trance made nowadays, one has to b stuffed to his head to start going on with hallucinations developing to a rhythm theme..

BTW I really do not count the fathers in this - Kox Box, Hallucinogen and their likes has shown in many cases musical genious ;-) |

Just thought i would add my 2 cents worth to this rather disperse and interesting discussion.
In my opinion, you cannot classify any form of electronic music and traditional music in the same sentence. They are two totaly different things.
Yes, most people will think that to be considered as music, an instrument that requires human interaction is needed. That is, by physically blowing into a trumpet, or plucking the string of a guitar, or by using one's vocal chords.
HOWEVER,
electronic music still requires human interaction. If you are going to classify trance as not being music, then all forms of electronic music (house, techno, etc.) are not music either. Whoever makes electronic music still has to physically use his skills to develop bass lines, synth sounds, melodies etc.
The difference is that the instrument is generally done on a computer and can make thousands of sounds, rather than the one of traditional instruments, like the Cello or saxophone or clarinet. Skill is required on both counts. Just because electronic music does not actually produce a sound, i mean you can't blow into it or pluck a string, you actually have to utilise the capabilities of the equipment to make sound waves, it does not classify it as music.
After all, electronica is classified as electronic music, is it not?
Yes, i also believe psy trance to be one of the most soulful and spritual forms there is. |

I am just going to agree with Asaf Shenberg
and say just "feed him acid at a party, force him to get into it."
But im fairly sure that he would get into it once the acid started to set in.

Once again i quote myself to those whom i hadn't made it clear to: Music is the expression of Emotion. Right?
Every music is expression of emotion and princips.
Usually you don't recieve emotion if you don't give it right? (usually).
And now, goa trance for example, it's emotional and it brings a lot of emotion in the people listening to it. Right?
And so if those who are listening to the goa recieve emotion, then something has given it right? And that's the music. The artist, transmits his emotion through music instead of words, words are lyrics. Usually lyrics aren't music, except opera or something...
And so, if trance, or goa(especially), brings emotion to you/in you, how can you say it's not music, if music is the expression of human emotion? But then again if trance or especially goa dosn't bring emotion in you, why the hell would you want to listen to it? After all, then you wouldn't enjoy it.

every thing is music, even birds sing' people don`t say its not music. art is something all beings have in common.
so come on trance is music muzak is music, even geva-tron is music.
who gives a damm if its made by computer a guitar or a howling dog??? music is one of the common things all beings have. |
