Plz excuse a non-baba little brazilian, but I want to share my thoughts on this one:

1. well, great piece Asaf. hats off to you man.

2. first my little personal stylistic disagreement:
you say (rightly imo) that trance and psychedelics are all about personal experience, but then you go on and generalize about what happens to one while on psychedelics and listening to trance...

3. Imo the most important thing to stress here is that we're all different human beings, with different mindsets and outtakes on the world, each with his own qualities and problems, and each with a very personal knowledge about himself.
And that's the key when doing Mind-Altering Stuff, be it psychedelics, be it weed, hash, E, coke or even a high dosage of vitamin C: KNOW THYSELF.
Yes psychedelics are doorways to perception, especially the inner one, but be prepared for what you're going to see. As PaL said, it's not always a pretty picture. So imo you have to at least have a glimpse into what you're going to see, so that you can enjoy the ride, and GROW as a person as the result of it.
Well, to sum up, I think my contribution is this: we all agree that psychedelics are a short cut, but that doesn't mean that one hasn't got to work hard before doing them.

oh, and btw, this has been written to the sound of the revelations of the 13 skulls

hmm ... nice talk for my sleepless night (double nuit blanche !)
I believe ... (couples minutes later ... it sounds like the halucinogen, you know ! )
well I believe those artefacts teaches us how to see behind ... behind the mirror the doorway
reveal the yet-hidden power of our brain
sometimes I try to let my mind wander just like when I smoke
not as simple !
not as powerfull !
but years after years I can feel some ... hmmm, let's say progress
will I find a key ?

Acid first experience couple week ago
morning forest tripping people and wisdom ...
hard to say !!
tired still feeling the effects of over artefacts
I think of it... later
what was this ... background of my soul never saw it !
why those thoughts never had them !
will I embrace them next time ?
will I find a key ?

...
the wisdom a holly one
because music is a similar artefact ... ok Yuli not as powerfull
but music trance is always part of our dreams our trips
          come back Portugal :D

[quote/] What these substances do is break down the barriers between the brain and reality. The hallucinations that are caused are when the brain gets too much information and can't handle it. But before you reach that level (and even in that level), you experience something much closer to objective reality than humanly possible without these substances. [\quote]

this is only conjecture, i read somewhere that in fact what happens is that the neural transmitters just stop working 'properly' and instead a few fire at random hence hallucinations.. still somewhere else (new scientist approx june last year) said the hullcinatory patterns (eg the hexagonal rug) were caused by the sort of patterns in instability you see when you boil a pan of water.
further, i find it hard to see how this can be classified as being closer to objective reality, just because our brain is not interpreting the signals from the external world correctly, i mean whos to say you are not further from objective reality in that state...           >>love will tear us apart...<<

Hey tom, but therein lies one big question: what's objective reality?

Is there anything to the world but a bunch of neuro transmitters firing signals? Is reality anything but a humongous deal of biochemistry?

it's quite a mindjob if you start thinking this way...           the greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist....

another question is, if one knows that he does not live in reality, can he accept it and still live by its rules and boundarys.
it scares me 2 b the only one who knows what is the real reality, without a way of showing it 2 anyone else.
there is a reason blonds babes have more fun (j/k)

luiz,
i tried to skirt around the question of what is objective reality, all i said was i didn't see how one could be sure you were closer to it. of course if such a thing does not exist then the question is rather moot i agree.

Ok, I see the point.
But I believe that's the job of one's memory: you're close to objective reality (the way one sees it) when your memory tells you so...
But then if you mess around enough with psychedelics you really get into murky territory, and objective reality starts to be a whole other thing, since your memory starts to grasp the "psychedelic realm" as it's objective reality (hence ppl who don't want to come back and stuff...).           the greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist....

People who don't want to come back eventually don't - that is a great risk. But as long as you have feet that still touch the ground and don't indulge in excess (like so manhy of us would like to do so much ), there's no reason that someone will lose sight of reality. Unless he's extremely sensitive to such substances or psychologically not ready for an experience like that.

... there are a million factors in everyone's brain that decide these things for each person. Including if such experiences are beneficial or not.

It's not for us to recommend anything other than "don't do this stuff, it's extremely risky". A brain, like that lame commercial said, is a terrible thing to waste.           http://www.myspace.com/Hooloovoo222

no connection between spirituality and the music ... Music and Spirituality go together , but its the PERSON that makes it in the end
