Everyone's got a different way of percieve and do things, and surely Josko is entitled to have his own.

I personally dont mind people asking me to play when I organize a party.
And I still dont see anything wrong to ask to play at someone else party, actually I rather ask than being recommanded.
Both way it is cool, self promotion ,if done with touch, didnt harm me (apart from SOnica ,of course ;-) so far.

best to let our work[s] speak for us

sorry wombat if i was one who did not reply... usually i try to route such emails to whoever is A&R'ing a comp and let them decide what they want...

no matter what you think about all the usual big names being on comps, your tune has to stand up next to the best they can do... and not many newcomers achieve this. Moravec did.

as moreno said - patience

and persistence

and quality

the scene is infected with to much snob people, and less psychedelic minds...that's the problem

have fun;)

sorry guys, i didn't mean to say snob people, but snob atitudes instead, cause sometimes i tend to have snobism myself, but when i realise that i try to fight against it, and be more resonable...

yeah i agree with that. i have not achieved nearly as much as wombat.. well actually i have not achieved anything. but i surely do work my norwegian white arse off each day to become better.. and i am sure if i keep doing this, it will attract the attention of the labels. until that day comes, the motivation to get an email from some of the respected labels will only make me grow strong as an artist and help me develop my music further.

cheers and yippikaayay!

I ran over the first topic, then this one.
I'm happy that I finally got the point about compils & albums.Interresting, really.
I also understood that there's some artists soul here and some other kind of people there...It's an interresting mix of ideas developped in this topic until useless comments came out from the second package of people who are spamming too much and , in my opinion losting their time.
Anyways I had the chance to meet Tyler (Quasga) last year at Samadhi festival and I know he's one of the finest artist in the psychill scene around the world thanx to his warm personality and his unbeatable creativity. So to me, he belongs to the first lot of (extremely rare) people.I felt that some people from the second lot are feeling a bit frustrated in front of such a great multi-talented artist and it's quite usual...But in that case I'd prefer reading more tempered comments with less agressivity into them, as Margherita said: "patience, persistence, quality" at the end certainly brings out maturity and successful days to those who are really looking to make the world better, giving them a good trip for their soul, making them feeling better and dancing....others will change for the best or fail.

I bought "Efflorescence" 2 times, one for me one to share, this is pure crazy creativity pushed to the max, really basting my mind up to the higher levels, a masterpiece as well as for the gfx's in the layout.
So don't try to make better: you can't!! Instead learn from the master and shhhhhhhh!!! until it's your turn!

my 2 cents
          Psybient/Downtempo psytrance album "Mystique" released!

such a small stone did a tsunami

can I say something here in defense of Andrew without somebody thinks I am doing promotion for interchill ?
I sent him a link to my first tune on the net few years ago, and I was an absolute nobody to him...he replyed me few days later entusiastic, in the end he didn't even release that tune, but he continued to write me later on to ask me more music, encouraging me.
once we had a meeting in australia and he didn't show up...never been upset for that.
today we respect each other even if we often clash in nasty forum battles.
I usually send him tunes only when he asks for it...I know that he is flooded with music...

and without offending anyone I can also say that I got my first booking for that famous festival in italy after Josko discovered me in london last year, one night that I was playing...he didn't even know that I am italian...I didn't ask him to play and I was very surprised when he asked me.

I run myself a label during the last decade, and been promoter too, already 10 years ago I was recieving tons of cassettes and cds, hours of music.
to reply to everybody is impossible...listen to all of it's impossible...sometime to be noticed is matter of luck too...or syncronicity...or karma maybe.

I think that a good/smart label manager or promoter is the one who is more busy in looking around for interesting stuff instead of only looking at what is right under his nose.

I agree with Rui here...many attitudes...

many ppl here seems to have a very high consideration of themself and their music...
a more humble attitude could be healthy

cheers

Hi guys!
Seems like the discussion has gone from compilations to a debate on why artists don't get replies from labels...

I TOTALLY understand the frustration among the artists when they don't get replies from the labels. When the artist has worked hard on something, and finally contact a label, it must be frustrating not even getting a reply... I also think it is pretty disturbing that Wombatmusic got that few replies after contacting so many labels. It sure makes it difficult for a fresh artist, or for a veteran like Wombatmusic, who has decided to go for a new artist name.

Anyway, from the other side (the label side of view), there are offcourse lazy label managers out there, but; In my case (Chill Tribe Records), I try to answer as many as I can, but usually there are simply TOO many e-mails! I get many e-mails every day from artists, and I simply don't have time to listen and answer to all of it. Usually, I get an e-mail with one sentence: "I looking for label, please listen to my track", and then an mp3 link under... Especially with the myspace flood these days, I wouldn't get time to run the label if I should listen to all of it. It seems like most people have some software in their computer these days, which they play around with before sending it to the labels... The result is a huge flood of pretty bad tracks, sadly. Maybe I would manage to answer all if I had this as a full time job, but with the low CD sales, I don't earn anything on this, and have to work on a full time job elsewhere to survive, which also takes too much time... This make the label sound more like a hobby thing, but this is how the ambient/downbeat scene is; low Cd sales, pretty underground and not big enough industry to make a living of, at least not in Oslo, Norway, which is now the most expensive country in the world...! (we past Japan last year...)

The way I usually work, is to contact artists that I have listened to for years, because I know they deliver what I want. But, it has also happened that I go for a fresh artist, like Jong. When I first got his demo, he had never released anything before. The demo was mostly jazz music, but I heard his potential, and asked him to experiment a bit more with the downbeat style. The result was two track on the Relaxed Journeys compilation, and now he is working on his album for Liquid Sound Design.

Bottom line, I totally understand the frustration among the artists, and at the same time I can understand the flood some of the labels has to deal with. Still, I think an artist deserve an answer after 3-4 e-mails....

Maux, I was impressed by your music when I heard you in Turkey. But I guess you don't like compilations.....

Wombatmusic will be a very familiar name in the "scene" from the 27th of April... (Ops, self promotion again...) Kristian, I will talk to you later today...

Now, time to check the Inbox in my e-mail.... How many have I got today? And a big sorry to those I haven't replied to...! I do my best in between all the label work, promotion etc, full time job, girlfriend, travelling, Discogs, other hobbies etc etc...

I am sure that was directed toward me. I am sorry but such comments like yours are killing debates.

arrrrgghhh... it seems that WE all take it a bit too personal...

I think WE ALL (artists, label managers, promoters...etc) have the problem of having a too high opinion of ourself...for sure too high compared to the market sales

expectations are a virus difficult to eradicate.

if you felt touched by my words maybe there was something true there

and, Wombatmusic...maybe I should tell you that when you posted that open letter on the net about the end of your last project Elysium, and your frustrations about the psy scene, I did post a link to it on this forum and started a discussion about it...also then somebody accused me to be the usual negative one.
I don't like to kill debates...I actually like to start them, and even to see them going wwwway off topic like now....and I take the responsability to follow them till the end...even when I am a bit over it (like now).

back to that infamous topic:

PKS, you missed the point, sorry.
I LOVE COMPILATIONS (surprise),
like I love chocolate...
too much of both may be toxic

lovely to see that the debate is simmering down to a discussion. the 1st try was too overheated.

"expectations are a virus difficult to eradicate."

this is very true indeed. i'm usually expecting a reply from labels if/when i send a demo and the reply percentage has been around 50%.
pks, you haven't replied to me even when i sent a
small cv with links to myspace tracks and my homepage. i was a bit disappointed but life goes on
i think it's very important for the future of the label
to send as many replies as possible to demo senders because you never know how big the amateur demo tweeker might be in a couple of years time. and if you were nice to him he surely will be nice to you

i agree that labels should mainly concentrate on
artist albums but at the same time understand the importance of compilations (to both label and artist). simple math:
artist writes 10 tracks and
a) gets them on 10 comps with 1000 copies each >
artist name spreads more effective, more people get to know the sound
b) releases an album on a label with 1000 copies
>if the album is really good you get more attention and perhaps sub licensing

so a) is a safe way for artist and label to check out if the sound is appreciated by the listeners while b) is more risky but also more fruitful at the end. so all in all one might say that albums and compilations support each other perfectly as long as there's a proper balance (and this was the point maux was talking about, wasn't it? the imbalance between flood of comps vs. few artist albums).
