Psycho - it totally depends on how high your bass is going. Personally I have my basses cut after about 150Hz, so I tend to highpass filter my leads at 200Hz (a little room in there helps keep the bass clear).

i think if u cut over 150 the bassline will sounds like an house track bass, use quadrafuzz to getting boosted on mid. frequencies...

not sure if i understood you correctly but sync the delay to the host and then use a delay time of 2/16 (or 1/8... )

@Orange: I think fuzzikitten means that he's cutting all bass freqs above 150, and cutting all lead freqs below 200, as to leave some space in between. Of course if you cut all bass freqs below 150 there's no bass left...

However.. I wouldn't cut already at 150... how can you get enough definition? Depends on your music style of course, but if you want a strong plucky bass I would cut much higher..

let me chime in...

there are more bass elements than just the kickdrum and the baseline, if you produce your music around these two elements the rest will not have much bass,
so i think its a matter of compromising.. i can find a meaty strong lead with more lowend and character to add more magic to a track, than to have a mega kick and bass, that probably wont have as much expression as the story telling sounds... its all about the idea..

Orange, its possible to cut the baseline very much if you have a very deep and heavy kick that fills the rest, and i know you know this...

some tracks have a strong baseline and weaker kick some tracks has a strong kick and a weaker baseline, some tracks try to combine a strong kick with a strong bass.. everything goes.... you can also say some track has a stronger lead and weaker baseline.. or how you want to put it.

and the rhythm section also can be strong with full and wide toms and congas, djembes, whatever that is pretty low in freq...
so now you have to compromise the kick&bass or the leads or whatever that is fighting for space...
the idea is that everything should be heard... and sound good and balanced.

i say, if you got a idea, follow it. but dont let something be weaker or stronger than it has to be...
find the sweetspots, and the find the definition of your sounds...

but whatever you do, dont compromise the story because the bass has to be mega phat, or this and that,... you know what i mean...

People, i hope no one forgets to put notches!!!
example: i cut bassline at 60 hz, lt it flow till 1600 hz
i put notch in ...lets say 1000 hz (cut those frequencies) with Highest Q (curve of cut)
then, on the lead, i make a EQ bump on 1000 hz, cut frequencies from there till ... 1800 , then let it flow till the end
the result u get is a "hole" in the bass line (same in kick) that the lead fits into

This is a quite fun way to make leads, well at least for me:

First you make the lead sound you want on any synth you fin comfortable. When you done the sound, you sequence a few notes of the notes you want to be played and record them. Next you load the samples into a sampler and play with the loop points and set the samples to loop. This will drasticly change the sound if the loop is short enough, but remember to let them play in the right key. Next you can assign each note to a different level of panning, meaning that when you actually start making the lead, every note always plays from the same degree of panning. I don´t know about you, but in my opinion it is quite fun sounding and fun to do.
