I really love the albino....

Here's one of the patches I use for most of my songs..

It's a modification on one of the presets that comes with the synth... I will mention both ways to do this particular lead.

I have 2 noise oscillators, 1 that's white noise and one that's pink noise. The white noise is routed to either a band pass filter and the pink noise is usually routed to a hi pass filter and turn up the resonance on both of the filters.

For the amplitude envelope, have a low attack and decay with a high sustain and a low release.

Now set up your modulation matrix (my favorite part of this synth) to have two lfo's control the amplitude to the same osc. Have one lfo affect amount into the negative (I usually use -1.000) and the other affect amount the exact inverse of the other lfo... I usually have the lfo's synced so that the modulation is symmetrical, but feel free to experiment. Have another lfo control the cutoff filter and you can play with the amount of the control range...
You can route the cutoff of the second filter (which should be the hi pass) to whatever you want, I usually use the midi learn for it and route it to a knob.
but remember to keep the cutoff slightly low to give it a lower airy tone.

Put a percussive midi pattern in using preferrably 16th and 32nd notes and now you have an aggressive noise lead that will have hi pitched noise coming in and out in a slightly random sub pattern (If anyone heard the M.o.E. track I wrote for the Lhiannon Sidhe compilation, that's the final lead I use in the breakdown as well as the lead I use in the breakdown of Delayed Aggression)

Here's a couple more variations to that... Instead of using a bandpass filter, just route both oscs to one hi pass filter and that makes one screamer of a lead as well... And just in case you wanna make one more variation to that.....
Set up a 3rd osc as either an analog or digital saw wave and have a 3rd lfo control the pitch of that osc. Route that to the bandpass filter and use one more lfo to control the cutoff, you've got some pitched madness... You can use delay and/or reverb with it and I tend to use overdrive on it...

This is my favorite lead and if you try it and like it, feel free to use it as well..

The base patch that I use is located in the Moving Sounds folder of the albino and is called wavesequence 3a or 3b...

Mindfilter, same here man, i struggle with my leads. I find it very hard to get the sounds i hear in my head but what i am doing now is going through Cosmosis's Patches and trying to get those sounds by working backwards. He's got some super patches in there. There are about 50 or 60 patches (maybe more) and i am sure by the time you are finished with all of them you will be the Lead King of the World!

Also, someone once said that if you can work one synth, you can work 'em all. Well mostly i believe. So work hard on Albino, its got almost everything you need!

Anyway, here is his site man www.cosmosis.co.uk (or .com , not sure, please check both)

Oh, Also SD.6 also gave some beautiful discovery patches, you might want to check 'em out as well. send him a PM or something coz the link has expired i think.

Ok Man, Good Luck with your music!           Rather than feeling that you're about to have the rug pulled from under you, let me teach you how to dance on a flying carpet

I use Virus C to make leads. The ring mod and fm,the osc2 sync to osc1,the sub osc and COMPRESSION!!!Virus have 2 filters(is good to use highpass on one and lowpass on the other so u can what u cut the bottom end while u shape ur timbre with the other ..if runned in Serial mode)!
Albino and Discovery from Soft synths also very good but COMPRESSION makes the PHATNESS more IN YOUR FACE!!

No matter what equpment you use , just make sure that you use 2 oscillators , when one of the two is one octave lower or higher , then you covering a wider frequency bandwidth , what leads to more intense sound , now you can desighn each of the oscillators sound preferences as you like it.
Another way to do this , is if you have an 4 tooth saw wave and 16 tooth saw wave , combined together , they make the same effect and nice brainstorming sound.           Please read the next reply for further information.

hey there

we use a lot the fm7

there are of couple of sounds that can be derived from one single patch that you can create yourself quite fast

in the LIB section, on the right you have a button that says INIT EDIT BUFFER, this will reset the synth and you will have only one osc with a SINE wave sounding.

the fm7 has fm synthesis (duh ) so basically if you connect more oscs you get a fatter sound. i will explain the basic version with just one osc.

go to the matrix of the fm7, the place where you interconnect all the oscs and the filter (z) and the distortion (x)

you see the F oscilattor, route it through the x and z and then to out.

go to the F and put a sawtooth wave in the osc

go to the Z and put a highpass filter, also try bandpass

go to the LFO and route LFO1 to the pitch, if you go up to 100 you get pitch madness, if you go up to 50 you get theremin-like madness. play with the rate and waveforms, i like to put a sine one and then play with rate automations. also make sure you put it tempo sync.

with this you get the typical pitch bended sawtooth that all psychedelic trance must have

what i do also is to go to the pitch section, and play with the envelope of the pitch and i also add noise to the oscillator from the matrix (you do this by increasing the value of the box just above it).

you can try this sound with midi patterns of all kind, it all depends on what you are looking for, but this basic synth is useful to get to a lot of possiblities that are often used in "those tracks you hear that have all those great sounds".

other variations to try:

put the lfo 1 up to 100 and its rate up to 100 too. you get a more aggresive lead

turn on the lfo2 and route it to Z, try different waveforms and rates. basically you are modulating the filters with the lfo.

in the megalopsy stuff we usually a lot this method, its a good start and from there you can get a lot of possibilities

i like this section and specially this thread, much more productive than bitchin about full on or dark trance .

I think the real trick to this sound is to add some portamento and phaser to it

I came close by having Osc1 as saw, Osc2 as square. Just added about 20 portamento and some phaser and chorus. Also set the filter env to max with ADSR settings: 0,59,119,0 and cutoff1 at 41.

The sound is not 100% alike the one in the track, but it comes pretty close for a first try. Hope you can use it for anything           *In AjmaGard We Trust*

Respect to Filter, that's a great post.

I haven't played around much with the FM7 as it's so fundamentally different than subtractive synths. This post has convinced me that it's time to learn it.
