A heavy technohead wouldn't go to Ibiza to party. He'd go to Germany. Visit Tresor, something like that. An IDM freak would go to the UK, for him Ibiza is the place where he'll go when he'll die and go to hell. House fans? Even the heavy duty house fans know that you aren't going to find 'their' music in Ibiza. Psytrance fans - we have our festivals, all around the world, and local scenes spread throughout.

More or less each electronic music genre has it's home place, somewhere that all of the real freaks gather, with a pure vibe. I gave the example of Tresor. A club in Germany. It's in no way fancy. It's always crowded. It's also considered the place with the strongest techno vibe, and has been this way for years. I know a few techno freaks that travelled all the way to Germany just to get there, and said it was worth it. I've known quite a few IDM nuts that went to England to go to all kinds of IDM parties, coming back with smiles on their faces which lasted for ages. Since the closing of the hippy market in goa, there has been no Mecca for psytrance. Goa - the place in the world, not the music, is no longer the center of the psytrance world. It hasn't been for a while. When it was the center, you could obviously hear the influences of that place all around the world - a DJ would return from goa with half his case new.

No new place has come to replace it, so the psytrance scene was forced to globalize. The international festivals became more and more dominant. But just like any global industry, it became victim of it's own marketing. Festivals with lineups containing "the big names" and nothing but started popping up all over the place. There was no place in which someone could just go visit, and know there'd be an awesome party waiting for him within the weekend (or earlier, preferably much earlier).

Now, this trend has gone one step further - Ibiza, home of the people who don't really know much about electronic music but want to dance with really hot chicks on extasy - is becoming a place to which producers and lately labels have moved to. Someone quoted one of the more respected psytrance artists now living in Ibiza (and you all know him) saying "you can only live in Ibiza for so long without being affected by the music here".

The Ibiza music is well known for the fact that anyone can dance to it. All you need is some beer or some extasy, whatever you pick. The influences in sound have been here for a while, but isn't this going a bit too far?

Psytrance has stopped being all that underground, yes, we understand this, but Ibiza - the electronic music center of commercialism - isn't that one step too much?

I agree that with some beer or some ecstasy anyone can dance to any kind of music...

But there are so many good producers in the world, that even if, let's say 10% (which is very much), were in Ibiza it wouldn't make a big difference.
And the only ones I know to live in Ibiza are Riktan and Banzi (maybe Raja and Chicago also?)... Can you be more explict about what psytrance artists live in Ibiza?

Psytrance is a mundial phenomena. Look at the amazing vibes coming from artists from Africa (for example), for the near nature festivals here in Brazil (another example ) or for the strong new blood coming from Israel (Sub6, Sestos and many more).

No need to worry kaz.

Just because a few producers and labels have moved to Ibiza doesn't mean that the center of the scene is going there. There aren't big psy parties in Ibiza yet. I seriously doubt that there is even a single psy night in any of the big clubs there. When psyfreaks want to go to their "Mecca", you STILL hear plans of going to Goa...not Ibiza. Even if Goa is not what it once was, there are still countless fans (I would even venture to say a majority) that still think of it as the Mecca for this culture.

As far as I can tell, Ibiza is just a fun place for these guys to live. Beautiful beaches, beautiful people, active nightlife....it is an island near Spain for god's sake! But I just don't see it affecting the music that we hear at parties.

Once you see Goa Gil changing his name to "Ibiza Gil" and headlining at Space or Manumission, then it's time to run for the hills.

Ibiza Gil

The problem is much bigger Kaz - I think Psytrance has splited in two.
On one side we have the Full Oners, who based their "home" in Israel. Most of Israel's trance crowd don't know/don't care what progressive is.
Lately trance in Israel has become much bigger than it was before. I can see that on the flyers I get in school - full on is played after hiphop/club trance and other popular genres.

The other side is the Progressive, whose base is mainly in Germany/Switzerland.

It's no secret that nowdays both Full On and Progressive are heavily influenced by other genres of music. Full On is not what it used to be - it's much more cheesy, kitshy and dancefloor friendly.
Progressive, on the other hand, is melting itself with progressive house, thus losing all the trancy elements.

If this will continue, we'll be left with no Psytrance at all - Full Oners will dream of partying in the biggest clubs of Ibiza and others will fantasize about partying in Germany.

Nectarios: I did not say other genres don't have a lot to offer psytrance music. If you think Ibiza is where the cream of the crop of the house music is made and/or played, I know a few guys that are into house that would like to have you shot. And Serge also happens to be one of my favorite artists as well by the way.           http://www.myspace.com/Hooloovoo222

TiMMY: Does it really exist a progressive psytrance scene?

Full on is psytrance nowadays. Whatever happened to tech-trance and minimal?           Ut ameris, amabilis esto.

I guess it does, somewhere, but not here.
Domo moved to Germany, where they say their music (progressive mainly) is more appreciated. I guess they know what they're doing.
