There is a reason some of us keep fighting against mp3s and stuff...that is: as much as there is no free lunch, there is also no free (form) music. Hopefully they will live on, but that seems more and more unlikely by the day. A sad sad day.

some of you may have heard that FREE FORM network is financially not on
the top. Several changes are comming up in 2003. For all of you that are
interested in the present status there is a report following further down
in this mail.

Present status of FREE FORM network:

Since the mid nineties FREE FORM is a plattform for labels such as FREE
FORM records, JUBILEE records, abstrait music and LIQUID SOUND music as
much as the home for several events and festivals in Germany.
At least since September 2001 the music business is deeply in trouble.
Sales are down no less than 30% in 2002. Massive changes will take place.
There are many reasons that make it neccessary to allow these changes to
happen. Old and not appropriate structures in distribution and
shopsystems, digital copying, free access to fresh music in the net, the
market itself, the amount of releases, prices, depression... and so on
force a reformation of the music market... Especially small companies
have difficulties to reach the customers these days.
To put theory into praxis:
in November 2001 the situation of FREE FORM network has started to become
unpleasant. We reacted quickly to weak sales figues. Already in early
2002 we signed promising distribution contracts with Major-Companies and
tuned into a stressed market.
Our hope that the structure of the Majors and their high interest in our
products would raise sales figures were only partly fulfilled. In
September 2002 it became obvious, that they can´t do magic – due to the
reasons explained above.
Parallel to the development in music business our Lovefield Festival – a
project of main emphasis – was flooded in 2002 by the so called „flood of
the century“ in Germany (www.lovefield.de). We happily repeated this
great Festival 4 weeks later, but it still produced a loss of money.
For the explained reasons our financial situation makes it necessary to
react. At present we check out how we can best fulfil our obligations. As
a consequence we are doing without staff and are moving into a small
office by February 1st.
Result: the doors are not closing, but things can change in structure and
form.

wish the desgusting talks about their "commerzializm" were true, they wasnt close this way.
what can i say - my all time favorite label in bad condition.
meanwhile i gonna buy few their releases that i dont have.
they were about expand Music, not boring beats for stone heads. innovate - its not for our community.
and - stay tuned, play hard, BE REAL.
p.s. - cant believe i wasnt at Lovefield. most innovate Electronic and Psy festival around the Globe.

hi-tech smaitech, it is becouse ppl won't buy CD's. many reason why for both sides.
in 2 years there will be more DJ's then artists and thwe scene will go to the club side, where the money is.

i listen to kompakt and smile right now also, but i always will miss Free Form (if they will not back). coze it was one of the very rare trance labels that carries about music, about make it interesting and never boring.
about avangarde, about sub styles that even dont have names, about FREE FORM of Psy Trance.

Arie, the club scene is faling as well. Automatic rec. used to sell 5,000 copies per vinyl, now they have trouble reaching 1,500.
in 2 years there will be less quality artists and less pro DJ's trust me. or maybee artists will take longer to produce music since they will have to have dayjobs.

Hard to believe 
I wonder what will happen to Artists like Deep-Dive-Corp (Box of Frox), Space Safari, Haldolium, Orbient, Feuerhake, Klangstrahler Project, The Havana Boys, Hippiehaus, etc etc.
And to Compilations like Lovefield, Le Café Abstrait, Club Culture for Urban Listening, etc.
Yeah, they was doing an AMAZING work and i'm also already missing their releases !!!
