The Best period is surely yet to come.. .around 2012
 ... but the difference is that yesterday was Quality and 2day is Quantity.. those who prove themselves stay and will be listened tooo 2morow... im positive

99 - 02 for sure , fullon , dark , prog , techy minimal etc .. all took shape during that period .. theyv been getting better scince at making those , but no new unheard radically diffrent styles have emerged .. no ?

The more housy psy, low bpm bordering between progressive house & deep trance perhaps.
Many people dont consider it psy though, while the house people dont consider it house either
You know 130 bpm, with deep grooves and many layers of sound, influenced a lot from faster progressive psy.
Other than that, the more faster paced dark psy / forest psy is a definate development. Perhaps not that different from much older stuff, but a lot faster and more powerfull (if you are into that kind of thing).
Also, some progressive psy shows developments into something going more towards psy than "club", examples of this are Kino Oko & Loopus In Fabula. To be said is that it has a unique and experimental feel to it. Eraser vs. Yöjalka is another interesting example, though not progressive.
So yes, there are definate developments - in the extremes, where they should be One is in the extreme of power & aggression, the other is in the deeply entrancing & groovy side of the sound.

hmm .. i disagree krell . all that u just mentioned is just little extensions of styles that first branched out druing that 99 - 02 .. nothing radically diffrent .. unlike back then when it went from `goa trance` to dark , fullon , prog , etc .. so while the best period for psy may be here , passed or is yet to come .. 99 - 02 in my mind is where all the evolution took place .. and it continues now . just at a slower and not so noticable pace maby

Well, I dont disagree with you
But I still think those are the styles which represent genuine evolution and experimentation within psytrance.
I would not call it "radically different" either, but still evolution.
In respects to radical changes in sound, I dont think we are going to see any of those, anymore.
To get something radically different, we would need to break the constricts of the genre definition and go outside "psytrance". Perhaps view "psytrance" as something which is not defined at all, and count in all other genres of music and look for evolution there.
Progressive, full on and dark psy have by know been "beaten to death" evolution wise.
However, the genres I mentioned show great potential for further evolution, and I think its unavoidable that interest in them will increase in the future, which will get more artists to take in interest in them (untill they also are beaten to death).

Best period for me is 1998-2002, with some great labels like Atomic records (remember "Kiss the Future"?), Aurinko records (Amazing 12"s, Catcher), Creamcrop records (great hard minimal).
I just liked the sound of the time the most. Of course I'll always love old flying rhino, dragonfly and twisted but well their style belongs to an era that's lived its course IMO, whereas the minimal-industrial sound never really got a chance to flourish IMO.
Now I think is an intersting period, if you ignore the crap there are some great crossovers into techno/electro (kloq, triac, motion) |
