1 rule i can think of though..
if people arent responding well to your music.. then its time to change it up a bit. stop only playing music you like, and think about the flow of the night and all the other artist as well as the venue the time etc. etc etc....

To stop playing music you like sounds like a really bad decision to me. Actually, I have never ever played a track at a party that I didn't like. To me, being a good DJ is also a matter of having your own taste and vision, and the will and talent to bring that to the dancefloor. Not just an organic jukebox.

That being said, a good DJ in my opinion also has a broad taste and can therefore adjust to different parties, settings and crowds and play a set which flows well with the other artists at the event.           DJ pr0fane (Iboga Records) | Multiphase

Ok, so maybe we should come up with maybe 3 types of Dj's then apply rules if need to each mold. It doesn't need to be 3.

Of course you have the Dj that got into Djing because it was safer than being a drug dealer.

Then you have the Dj that serves the servants. Lets the people control their every move in order to elevate themselves, maybe.

Then there are the translators that manipulate sound and take the listeners on a ride that they can only control from their minds, not by dancing or not.

Glam dj's require more standards and rules. Punk dj's require less, Punk doesn't mean sound so please don't think poor sound quality.

i see i have to explain a few things more so also the idiots
and would like to be understand

about rule number 1 clearly there is people out there
who think they should play the same track twice
you can do whatever you wanna do i dont stop you
but just to give you an example if you hear the rmx money for nothing 3 times in the same dj set you are ready to go up there and kick the guys ass

anyway so about rule number 2 its so easy to play tracks from the same artist after the other every idiot can do that
very creative and challenging
if its collaboration tracks a different story
but playing one kindzadza track after the other i can let my itunes do that

about number 3 if you talk to the live act that is different.
but if a dj plays the hits or even unreleased tracks from live acts that is embarrasing and i saw it happen many times and there was no open dialog involved and i know many live acts and they all told me this story a lot of times

so a general thing as clearly some of you dont have the understanding or proper behaviour (up yours - very creative and intelligent lol)
if you talk to the live acts and ask them thats a whole different ballgame
but just playing what you like and dont care is just a big egotrip

also perhaps i have to point that rules means guidelines!!!
rules and law are two different things,
again shows me the level of understanding of some user here

if there wouldnt be rules so try to beatmatch a track with different bpm and not changing the speed and see if rules dont apply

anyway perhaps one thing i have to point out too
i didnt come up with this rules...

they were made from the first goa djs like laurent, goa gil, fred disko ,red baron etc .

not that i care what you do or think is right just wanted to point out again where the whole thing is coming from
and clearly writing in big letters doesnt help either
to show the humor in it

so have a good day and looking forward to more creative answers and not just stupid ego trips and foul language

Some good points here.

And one of the most important things that any Dj should follow imo, is to buy the music.

Mate, you cannot come on here and post this bullshit and not expect some of the people who actually dj at events and have some talent to not have a reaction.

And I don't give a rat's ass who made the rules!

And if you seriously knew anything about dj's, the real originators waaaaay back before this music even existed mixed without any of the gear we have today, and some of those old mixes are done better than your Fred Disko's and Gil's.

Who the hell are you or anyone to tell any of use how the hell to do our job?

A dj has complete creative freedom to mix and create a musical journey using the music in his stash bag/book.

And you know what, mixing some KDD's older more organic sounding stuff with his high tempo glitchy stuff isn't as easy as you make it sound, it take a lot of eq'ing and adjusting the volume level and being a dj in general!

Your so far up your own arse you can't see that your OP and your second mindless rant are the most egotistical of the lot!

Go back to your little self involved world and get over yourself!

BTW the releases in your sig are like 2 years old, you might consider an update !

I agree with everything but the last few sentences Rule 1 makes sense, i don't agree with rule 2 and 3 depends on the artist. So no rules as such.

In my 17 years of djing almost all styles of electronic music, i have successfully broken all the first 3 rules many times. Not that i disagree with them but anyway, rules are made and meant to be broken

If i could contribute to the discussion that would be not a rule but more of an advice.

Always maintain eye contact, read and feel your audience and flow with it. And adjust accordingly if necessary.           A friend told me once that the biggest mistake we make is that we believe we live, when in reality we are sleeping in the waiting room of life.

I think rules were made to be broken.           Trance is the answer
