in an effort to keep the trance scene alive and healthy it dawned on me that one of the things US trancers MUST do is support your local stores.

The local stores who have trance cd, vinyls, clothes etc... they are the fabric of our scene in a way; organizer's sell tickets, promoters place flyers for all to know about events, music is sold, trance is nutured in that way. try not to buy cd's from the web from other countries... help us all grow.

an example is Global Trance, NYC... it is the only true psytrance store in NYC, this is a tough situation, because if its sales plummit (downloading mp3's, ordering from psyshop, etc) there will be in effect- no trance scene. i'm really not taking it too far at all- think about it. without an info hub, where will we know about parties? where will people buy tickets? where will they get to sample cd's at full length with a human being to tell you about them in detail? the answer is nowhere. the web is nto enough, we need to keep these places alive.

it was just the other day that someone told me something that hurt a bit... they told me that they had a really good time at an ecliptic-trance party and as a result they had theyre friends (NYU students) order lots of cd's from psyshop.com

FYI, global trance sells cd's much cheaper then in the store through their website, it comes out to be the same as ordering from psyshop, and they have the same stuff... so why not?

it is literally like not watering the tree who's branch we sit on.           "On the other hand, you have different fingers."

this is a really impt point! buying on homeoftrance.com or at the global trance store is easy and cheap, supports the local ny scene, hence the US scene and the artists themselves!           ein chadash tachat hashemesh. there is nothing new under the sun. --kohelet.

I agree let's support them! ,but they can sell a bit cheaper (they cost more than other stores from other states and websites), they would sell more and still get more profit if they give more deals on cd's.

My two bits- I think having a small bar counter for coffee and also some beers is another great idea. It would keep people around for few hours even, and listening to music. Here in Tokyo there is a great cd lounge called Quintrix, and you can listen to any cd they have on the shelfs. Also they have a small bar, DJ setup and a decent sound system. This really brings people together- you can listen to tunes, have a few cold ones, meet other people at the bar (its a sit down bar), and also hear the local Djs come play their stuff. I have played at this one a few times, and when the music is kicking people stay for ever! They start buying drinks, dancing, meeting the other people, and really creating a community. A key element there is that you can listen to all the music in the store, which gets people to stay there for a long time, creating a nice comfortable plavce to have a good time, not just shop.
It is more interactive than just buying cds. I wanted to write this so that it can give some people some ideas and help out with the local stores.
Surrender, you made a great post, I also believe cd shops are very important in its role as a communications hub for the local trance scene. Good luck to all!

While I absolutely agree that local trance stores should be supported, I swore that I would never said my foot in Home of Trance (when did they change their name, btw) when they threw a party on the same night last January when Omnitribe had a long-planned party with SBK. They announced it at the last moment and their only purpose was to have Omnitribe lose money. They also stopped distributing Omnitribe flyers around that time. That is not exacly supporting the local trance scene. In addition, I just checked their web site and for some reason I cannot find any information about the Spectra party this Saturday. I wonder why...

And even with the above issue aside, they cannot really compare to Psyshop or Saikosounds in terms of availability or price. Here are CDs I have bought so far this year:

Midi Miliz - The Remixes
Downhill - Silent City
Shaman - Foretaste
Horns and Hoofs Entertainment - The Dissidents
Iboga Records - Puzzled
Sub Machine Records - Chrome
Tetraktys - Tetraktys
Oryx - Advanced Retromodel
Hux Flux - Division By Zero

Of these CD's, I could only find the new Hux Flux album on the homeoftrance.com and the price was 16 dollars, compared to less tha 14 at psyshop. So even if I wanted to buy CD's from them, I wouldn't be able to or would have to pay more money. And it is not like these CD's were released last week.

And finally, speaking of local web sites that sell CD, maybe we should mention elektrolust.com, where you can really get cheap CD's.

So while agree with the point that local trance stores should be supported, there is some history involved with Home of Trance. The obvious fact is that they choose to promote a very, very narrow view of what psy trance is. And I don't see that as a great way of supporting the trance scene.

I will never buy anything from these HoT guys.

Firstly, last time I went to their store, they were extremely expensive. $22 per CD + tax? No thanx! I understand that rent in Manhattan is very high, so they have to have higher prices, but Throb was cheaper, friendlier, and ususally more up to date. Placing a large order from Saikosounds was much cheaper than both, and Saiko always bent over backwards to please me.

Second, I have run into some very rude people working in that store, on several occassions. Why they have been rude to me, I have no idea.

Example: I believe the last time I went there was last spring, with my girlfriend. So first off, one of the employees was hovering around me from the moment I entered. I had a lot of time to spare, so I decided to look through every single one of their CDs, hoping to find some old out of print CDs. I was NOT being sloppy, in fact I left the CD section in a neater condition than they had. This whole time, this employee was watching me like a hawk, and it really did make me quite uncomfortable. Okay, no big deal, I understand that they don't want me to mess up their store or get any products stolen, although it is still unusual/unfriendly.

Before I could finish looking through the CDs, the employee approached me, again. He told me "This is not a library". Those were is exact words! He went on to say that it was not okay to look through the CDs, that there are many websites where I can read about releases, and that I should know what I want before I come into the store!

At this point I wanted to tell him to fuck off, but I remained polite and walked out of the store. Very stupid on his part, because I had found several out of print CDs that I was definitely going to purchase, like the old U.X. CD.

The local store in Montreal kicks ass. If anyone ever passes by, you should definitely go check out psychonaut on Prince Arthur just east of St. Laurent.
I am not affiliated with them in any way btw. The CD selection is slowly becoming better and better, and the prices are finally starting to drop a bit. For those in Mtl, you could also order albums that they don't have, and probably get them within a week or 2, which comes cheaper than ordering from psyshop yourself.
The store also has some nice clothing, artwork, and other interesting little tidbits.           Load Universe into Cannon. Aim at Brain. Fire.

My friends ordered a large order of clothes (wholesale) from Home of Trance. When the clothes arrived, they were not the ones ordered, and came mostly in the XXX-Small size, which could only fit a child. HoT never returned phone calls. I think my friends had to throw the stuff away - it was totally useless.

Online, word of mouth, and promotion at other psy parties. Personally I have never picked up a flyer from any store (maybe once).

I'm kind of surprised to hear so many negative responses to Home of Trance. I have ordered online from them several times in the past and they have always been very helpful and honest. They do not get all of the new releases but the ones that they do get, I order from them becuase it is cheaper (I actually think they have a better selection of older CDs then Saiko Sounds). Shipping is expensive from over seas and I try to avoid it. I do not buy CDs from the actual store though (only online), it is too expensive. But when I have been there to get tickets and such they have always been nice. Personally I don't think anyone should hesitate to order from them.           my cat is deathly afraid of aluminum foil

Hi,

If by any chance any of you guys come to montreal you have to come visit at psychonaut. On top of clothing, books, bongs, pipes and cd's we have tons of other very cool stuff. We are the official montreal retailers of green babylon (hemp clothing). We also sell a lot of herbal goodies like herbal e, slavia divinorum, san pedro peruvianus (yes yes the actual psychedelic cactus) , seeds of all kinds (to grow you know what) and other stuff i wont metion here. I says "we" but I am actually not the store owner, I am just managing the cd orders / distribution.

all this to say if your in mtl ... you gotta go.

wow, ill definitely check out that montreal store when i make the visit.

But i am a bit troubled by all the negative comments about HOT as well. They are the only trance store in a region that doesnt exactly have 50000 trancers. in my opinion their selection is perfectly adequate. They have always been very helpful in recommending new stuff and have a decently priced online store. and yes its convenient to get tickets for pparties there. they also have lots of cool paraphanalia, psychedelic odds and ends that you cant really find in that many places.

i definitely stand with em.

FYI Home of Trance is now Global Trance, it was changed because Yoni took over the store. That's the info I got, the past owners let's just say they weren't doing the right things.
