oh right now that I googled him I realise he has done this type of stuff to me many times before...
is it true that he runs the chill out stage at boom or voov or something? he claimed it in his pm's to me... like I'd care either way... as well as stating he had a heart attack 4 years ago and that he works in some kind of aged care field?
I find him kinda of cute in an annoying way...

The best way to judge someone's mastering skills is to have in front of you 4-5 not mastered tracks by various artists and pass them on to 3-4 mastering engineers and then compare the results on a good soundsystem with couple of other people around because sometimes even mastering is a matter of taste and hearing.
Not only you have to compare the mastered versions between them but also compare the original unmastered versions with each mastered version in order to check how each engineer gives a new depth, power, even concept to each track.
This is what i did with both compilations that Pavel already mentioned from my label Exposure Productions featuring many well known names from the scene with tracks that vary from each other from progressive to full on and techno and from morning to night sounds.
I decided after this experiment/research that Avi Space Cat is one of the best mastering guys around, the guy has the equipment, experience and knowledge for this job and most of all he knows after all these years in the scene how a track needs to sound on the dancefloor.
I worked with him not only on my cds but also on cds from other labels that i was asked by other managers to send to him for mastering purposes.
I havent heard the cd you are talking about but anyone who claims that Avi doesnt know how to master a cd obviously has no idea of what he is talking about.
In our scene Avi is one of the top notch mastering guys along with Son Kite and Domestic and i dare to say Ololiuqui who also is very very good on this issue.
Avi once said to me that the mastering engineers work also depends on the material that he is given,if the mastering engineer is given a shit track of shitty production then there is not much he can do about it and i am 99% sure that this is the case with the cd in the original post in this topic.
In any case Avi is a top notch mastering guy (for our scene at least) and it will be very hard for anyone to prove the opposite.

besides the interesting points of view of everybody, i ask the gentlements to stop the paralel conversations - it has nothing to do with the topic itself, and it is irrelevant
just check this on the guidelines:
"This is a big forum:
Make sure your posts are interesting to the majority of the community. Otherwise carry on discussions privately- the forum enables you to
send private messages to other forum members, and communicate with them via different channels- ICQ & Email. "
the managment and i believe and a lot of other users aprettiate that your conversation go to other place ok?

Someone in here is having their period. Hard.
I don't know much about mastering, so would anyone like to point up the criterias for a good mastered album?
*On a side note. I highly doubt there is anything wrong with psykovsky's debut album mastering. It's ment to be the way it is for max psychedelic effect. -

^^ intersting you mentioned the Psykovsky album, cause i have also read a lot of bad critics on the mastering, but well, i really dig the way the sonoritie is coming from that album.

So specific criterias for good mastering totally depends on how you want the album to be heard, and what style of music it is ect. There are no true criterias except your own taste and beliefs? - Maybe a objective part is that Psykovsky's debut sounds like a thick trip and works perfectly on a trip with floor, walls and cealing. So it's proparly mastered like this for this reason, to have a lot of thick atmosphere. But again, it's turns from objective to subjective and we are once again left with a little piece of plastic called Taste. - If there are critierias for good mastering, feel free to post some points. Would be interesting to read.
JMP: Will be fun to hear your mixes when your ready.

Generally if a whole compilation sound overcompressed or very quiet I would suspect bad mastering. Same goes for if all the tracks have really bad spectral balance like obvious lack of bass or too much treble.
Basically those are measurable qualities by using an RMS meter and spectrum analyser and something any half decent mastering engineer should get right.
The hard part to get right is the finer adjustments that cannot be done using only analysis tools, but that aspect is pretty much impossible to judge without having the unmastered versions to compare with.
Sometimes it can be the case that the source material is so bad that you have to allow more or less perceived loudness than ideal to not make things even worse, and same goes for spectral balance.
But if RMS or spectral balance is visibly out using metering I would say it's safe to assume that it's bad mastering...if the source material is so bad that it's impossible to get that right any serious mastering engineer would ask for a new mix or break to the artists in question that the tracks is beyond salvage.
