Much has already been said about this release, here is all I can add...

The On Air remixes are absolutely divine, the selection of the artists is so ingenious that this CD should be used to illustrate the differences and similarities between the different movements in electronic music today. The original is so good that it's unfair to the remixers. Yet, I really liked the Midival Punditz, NDSA, and Deedrah remixes. Lemon8, however, can be renamed to Cheese8. What is up with that cheesy build-up, it can fit on any Paul Van Dyke release and it would definitely make Jean Michelle Jarre proud. I still can't diminish its educational value though.

Great CD one way or another! The cool sticker adds a nice touch to the package. Thanks to Seb and Marcus!

You can tell this is going to be HUGE.

I'm wondering though, what is this melody akin to? Someone mentions 'Halle Bopp' and is this it? I know it from an old epic trance song, but I can't remember which one...

I'm actually also wondering what this track has to do with Hale Bopp ... I can't find anything and I actually listen an extra time just to be sure.
The melody in the track I haven't heard before either but of course there can be a track that have a similar melody that we haven't heard!!!

Naturally there is so much music out there... if I do run across that old track I'm thinking of, I'll pass on the name here...

Concerning the "Hale Bopp" comparison; It's in the intro of the Original Mix of "On Air" - the pads or chords in the background that start after around 8 seconds, and run throughout the intro.

In Der Dritte Raums "Hale Bopp", it's also in the intro, and starts after around 25 seconds (in the version I have), and run for over one minute - perhaps a bit speeded up.

Never mind, perhaps it's just my ears - I'm not saying you’ve copied or anything – the best way I could describe it was just that it sounded like something from "Hale Bopp" - one of my alltime favourites           DJ pr0fane (Iboga Records) | Multiphase

Well I think it's easy to guess that Seb and Marcus are fond of Der Dritte Raum's vibration... And that's a really good thing, prooving exquisit musical taste !

Don't think I'm crawling... but there's a world between this and remixing benny bennasy for example...

Better late than never, here goes my review

Sonkite have sure made a name for themselves. This is just the first of four releases that are coming out this year. The cover design is really simple for all of the four releases. It all makes sense since the album is called colours but somehow I still feel that they could have done something more than just a plain single colour cover. The remixes featured here are made by very different artists which. Some of which are not very familiar to our scene.

On Air (Original)

This track was just one of those summer hits which blew you away. Since I first heard this track at last years samothraki festival I just couldn’t wait for it to be released. It’s very different from any previous Sonkite track. It takes a turn to a more melodic and breakbeat structure that is just filled with fantastic retro sounds. Yet the retro sounds are not from the trance scene but more from the old electro roots. Still the entire track does have a more commercial ring to it. The first part of takes you very slowly with soft melodies, some voice samples which you can’t figure out. All I can say is that they are british male voices and one sample that keeps saying: “because it was about radio”. But above all there are sounds you have never heard before. The structure is just pure trance filled with lots and lots of breaks and melodies. But the biggest highlight of the track is the break in the middle which is just insane. The entire track slows down then speeds up the beat when it just comes to a point where you have static noise which then starts to create a melody and just fades from left to right at really high frequencies. Then a fantastic breakbeat part comes in with the main melody. Again we have a buildup and the track just takes off again. Of course I don’t have to emphasize that Sonkite have the best quality production on the progressive trance scene. This track is no exception and although it really is made to be a dancefloor hit it still keeps most of the familiar Son Kite sounds.

On Air (Deedrah Remix)

Deedrah is one of my favorite artists from the full on scene. Of course the remix is also a full on one and a great one. After the short intro filled with some very nice effects we get a typical Deedrah bassline which is just massive. Also the main melody from the original comes in. All of the original sounds have been given a really groovy function here and with his trademark bassline they just deliver perfectly. After a while there is a buildup and a really down and dirty melody sample is given. High hats enter and after a while we get a really dirty and noisy theme. This one will either give you a headache or make you dance like insane which is true in my case. A bit before the end there is another break and the track kicks off again pounding and stays that way till the end. Fantastic dancefloor material.

On Air (Lemon 8 Remix)

Here we have a more progressive remix which doesn’t have as much elements from the original. This is something that really deserves to be called a remix. Just parts of the original are kept intact while everything else is given a much more groovy structure with a really driving feel to it. Around the middle the main melody comes in and it’s a bit over the top. It’s an entirely different melody from the original one yet it is just a bit too cheesy for my taste. The rest of the track elements kind of save it but it’s still just too much for me. It gets better again after the melody ends and just keeps driving you again till the end. Not bad but my least favorite track.

On Air (Future/Past Remix)

This is probably my favorite remix. Very different and very old school electro influenced. The breaks are fantastic and the main melody that kicks in is also great. Although most of the sounds are a bit cheesy the entire retro structure just keeps it on the right track. There are some fantastic breaks around the middle which are filled with sounds from the original yet here everything is much slower and calmer. There is a buildup and a normal beat starts, and just when you think that the track will take on a more aggressive form it just goes back again to its great breakbeat structure. But the best thing about it is a fantastic gameboy like melody that comes in near the end. It just reminds me so much of any video game from that time period. A really nostalgic retro feeling just flows through the entire track. Fantastic Remix.

On Air (Midval Punditz Remix)

Here we have a completely different remix from all the others. This sounds very similar to early Shpongle or Entheogenic material. Simply put, this is a chill out track with world music influence. The only thing that doesn’t really fit here are the voice samples. The track is of course very slow and has a variety of instruments with a Sitar being the most obvious one. It’s also filled with chanting voices and has a general oriental feel to it. This kind of stuff has already been done before by artists I mentioned above but never the less it’s a very nice track.

On Air (NDSA Remix)

The guys from Ticon give us a very housey remix which is great to lift a party atmosphere. It starts very simple and predictable yet after a while we have a break and a really unexpected deep bassline comes in. It’s just massive and really groovy. The main melody from the original is introduced with not too many changes but then we get this really acid like part which will again either fry your brain and give you a headache or make you go crazy. I have to say that I really don’t like it especially when it comes to the buildup part as it just goes over the top. The rest of the track structure is fantastic and it keeps the really deep and groovy atmosphere. A great track all the same with just a few sounds that annoy me.

All in all the remixes are very diverse. From Progressive house and trance to full on, world music and electro which is why it is almost impossible for most people on this scene to love all the tracks. I also have to say that it was a very brave attempt to put remixes made by artists not so familiar in our scene. In any case this is a really good introduction to the album and the rest of the collection. It just has a little bit of something for everybody and it’s a must have for any DJ.           DJ Dovla | Interchill Records, Flow Records

A very nice CDS that stands well by itself and fun to listen to at home (though the "cause it was about radio" can get tiring at time, especially that you find yourself walking all day reciting it in your head... brainwash...).

The original is just amazing, true emotional Goa feel, just the way it was in the beginning. So much feel that makes me happy expecting the album, as it is definitely a good continuation to the amazing emotional power first heard on Son Kite's remix to Vibrasphere's Newport. The break is of course huge- basically this is a full on track, just in low bpms.

Deedrah remix I find a bit boring, though it's not a bad track. I think Astrix should have remixed this one as the more full on trance representative- he would have made it a monster. The break just cries for it...

Lemon 8 remix is also great, hypnotic, groovy, and fun to listen to.

Future/Past remix shows amazing potential to be the best remix here, but for some reason it ends right where it should have begun, I love those crazy psychedelic organ sounds in the last 30 seconds- that should have been the main thing here.

Midival Punditz make an excellent track here, nothing less than what I would expect them to- and I expect a lot from these guys. They're just amazing.

NDSA deliver a groove bomb that is the best dancefloor power piece here.

So to sum it:
Original- emotional Goa full on in low bpms. Beautiful.
Deedrah- doesn't do it to me.
Lemon 8- hypnotic and fun to listen to.
Past/Future- Good one, but could have been excellent.
Midival Punditz- Great chillin stuff.
NDSA- groovebomb for the dancefloor.

Excellent piece of plastic to buy.           ---------------------------------------------

Son Kite need no introduction. Having released two albums already, they’ve made a name for themselves as one of the pioneers of progressive trance music, always trying to reinvent music. This is the first of the colours series containing two singles, a full length album and a live act recorded on DVD.
The minimalistic cover design is plainly beautiful and serves the series right.

The original track opens up with a very chilled atmosphere which reminds me of Aiwana (Downbeat mix). The rest of the track is unbelievably unique and fresh, as simple as that. It gave me the chills like in the good old Goa days (something that I haven’t gotten for a very very long time). Deedrah’s vision of the track is more full-onish yet groovy and has a special twist. I really like the solid kick on that one. Harry Lemon AKA Lemon 8 presents us with a progressive house version (T3). An emotional break which builds up slowly and guaranteed to sweep any dancefloor with positive vibes. Served with cheese, but you gotta have some in these cases. I really don’t know what to make of track 4 (a remix by Future/Past). It’s very weird, different and cool in some sort of way. Too bad it’s shorter than it should have been. Seems like it ends just when it’s about to start…
Midival Punditz (T5) have created a dubby, eastern influenced version. Mellow, trippy atmosphere. A lot of live instruments like tambourine, sitar and flute. Invites you to sit back and relax a little, but not too long because the next track raises the BPM. NDSA a side project of Ticon, which shows us their housier and clubbier side. It lacks the original's magic, but does have a lot of Ticon’s magic in it. Good for the dancefloor.

Recomendation: A group of leading artists, each in his own category. Each one of the remixes approaches the original track differently (and the sound is top notch, too). The sample “It’s about radio” gets quite annoying after a lot of listen, but that’s expected from a remixes CDS. A promising start for the series. Three more to go.
Favorites: 1(!),2,3,5.
