Cover: http://www.mpdqx.com/digitalstructures/images/dig025stor.jpg

Track list:

1. On Air (Original)
2. On Air (Deedrah Remix)
3. On Air (Lemon 8 Remix)
4. On Air (Future/Past Remix) - not on the 2x12"
5. On Air (Midival Punditz Remix) - not on the 2x12"
6. On air (New Disco Science Alliance Remix)

Review:

This year is going to be crucial for the Swedish duo Son Kite. A lot of effort has been put into a series of new releases with the overall theme "Colours": The 3rd full-length album, a live-DVD, and 2 singles - and the first single have just been released. Featured on the single is the track "On Air", mentioned many times in this forum, and titled with the help of the users here on IsraTrance - plus no less than 5 (only 3 on the 2x12") remixes from various top class artists.

1. First track is the original version. It starts out with a mellow 2 minute intro (do I hear elements from the intro of “Hale Bopp” in the background?) and some low talking. Hard to really hear what’s going on, but it’s something about bars, pubs and most important; about radio (a sample repeated many times throughout the entire release). At around 2:20 the track really starts, and the first thing that comes to mind is, that this is a bit faster and lighter than the usual style from Son Kite. With side projects like Filur, Kooler and Minilogue they have moved more into house-territory, but “On Air” is definitely trance. After a few more minutes and the bass line accelerating, we get the infamous theme from the Samothraki video. Very fresh and atypical, lifting and building up for a marvellous peak that will overwhelm the dance floor - Outstanding.

2. Next up is Deedrah’s remix. Deedrah is no doubt one of the most highly acclaimed artists on the scene, and as expected he gave “On Air” a more full on approach. The track starts with the voice sample from the original, but after short and pretty raw intro, Deedrah gets straight to the point with some extremely well produced and somewhat groovy full on – with his usual trademark sound.

3. The Dutch Harry Lemon alias Lemon8 is perhaps unknown to many in the psytrance scene, but has a pretty big name in the progressive house scene, releasing tracks as "New York, New York" and his "Inner Sanctuary" series. This remix is probably the dance track with the least elements from the original, but nevertheless a fine progressive creation. The theme is transformed from a fairly twisted build-up, to a somewhat more epic trance-theme – almost too cheesy, but only almost.

4. And now we move in another direction. The Future/Past remix is really sweet – not very dance floor oriented, but with cool breaks and with many electro influences. Very interesting, and far from the usual 4x4 stuff – the downside is that I found it to short, as I was really digging into it when it finished. Unfortunately the inlay doesn’t provide any information about this remix – is Future/Past an artist, or is the remix made by Marcus and Seb, showcasing what to expect from Son Kite in the future? Either way, fine remix.

5. Yet another downbeat remix, this time with the duo Midival Punditz. I must admit I haven’t heard much of their work yet, but heard them praised by many – and now I know why. Their remix isn’t that close to the original, apart from the “radio” sample, but nevertheless very well done. Hypnotic downbeat ethnic music with classic eastern instruments - A must have in every chill DJ’s collection.

6. Ending the CD is another track for the dance floors – a remix from New Disco Science Alliance, the clubbier and housier side project of Son Kites friends at Digital Structures, Ticon. NDSA’s approach is much deeper and groovier than the Lemon8 remix, and definitely more true to the original. After the original, this version is my favourite on the CD - a deliciously groovy dance floor monster.

Bottom line:

On Air Remixes is a very solid release, as one might expect from one of the leading progressive psytrance labels. It’s worth buying alone for the original tracks as a teaser for the forthcoming Son Kite album, but all the tracks have their unique touch, and will justify the purchase. On this CD you will find more diversity than on 90% of the compilations nowadays, and all tracks are of high quality. Top class.

Verdict:

9/10 – highly recommended!

Look at the tracklist, I wrote that the Future/Past and Midival Punditz remixes aren't on the 2x12".

the vinyl version is indeed a double 12" LP 2 tracks on each piece of vinyl.

as was expected a very promising opening to the "COLOURS" saga.
I liked the original one, the Deedrah is very powerfull, but the best one in this mcd is the new disco science alliance rmx which actually sounds much more "ticon"y then "ndsa"y imo.

All in all indeed a very variable maxi offering most of the styles you can let son kite track reach (wouldnt like the thought of an alien project rmx) .

MCD Already sold out btw at cosmophilia so get your copy as soon as you can.

Review:

Step one of a four-stage rocket!

A kite full of colours sweeps across the sky with a strong wind in its sail… Yes, Swedish super-producers Son Kite has released step one in their ambitious Colours project… One Album, two singles and a DVD... Wikkid! This first single, proggy jewel “On Air”, was christened with the help of Isratrance-regulars and includes no less than 5 amazing remixes!

Let me take you thru the tracks…

#01: First up is the original… A very cool, floating, dream-like intro sets the mood… Someone hits a piano-key about 5-6 times, low voice-muttering samples in the back-ground, someone talking about radio – basically we’re just chilling out, having a good time… And then, at 2:22 the infamous Swedish progressive baseline cuts thru the silence like a scythe… This is the true essence of trance, razor-sharp percussion, beautiful synths, wonderful melody… And a build-up @ 5:15 that’ll annoy the hell out of you the first time you hear it, but after a few listens you’ll give in to the sheer genius that is On Air! So get your damn hands up in the air – this is a magic track!

#02: Next up is Mr. Ibiza himself… Many of the elements from the original are still intact… The about radio samples and the basic groove and melodies – just pitched up to suit the Deedrah-style. Very dance floor oriented… Deedrah did a good job on this one! I like full on – and I like progressive… But I prefer to take them individually, so somehow this is a little out of place for my taste… Nothing is wrong with the track though - let me stress that… Nice track!

#03: Prior to this release I had no idea who the hell Lemon8 was and the cover notes didn’t provide any info either… Good thing we have Discogs.com then! ;o) Featured here is critically acclaimed Dutch house-producer Harry Lemon, remixing the hell out of the original… Only smaller elements are kept – just enough to let you recognize the source… This is one heck of a Gatecrasher-Ministry-of-Sound, epic, driving, progressive trance tune… Playing for a little over 11 minutes, you could’ve cut a few slices of this lemon and still maintaining the juicy flavour! Great track!

#04: Another unknown remixer… Thank Shiva for Discogs! ;o) Future/Past is Kirk Degiorgio and he has quite a few tracks on B12, R&S and Applied Rhythmic Technology releases… I still have no idea where he is from or what his other stuff sounds like, but at least now I know his name… Well, that’s wondering from the point really… This is quite an odd remix… Part of it is pure noise; part is pure experimental house bliss… Cut beats, irregular rhythm and overall weirdness… This track has its moments, but generally I’m not too impressed! Decent track!

#05: Ahhh… A downbeat mix! US breaks-n-ambient duo MIDIval PunditZ working magic here… This is nice blend of all kinds of stuff… Dubby breaks, Oriental chanting, Raja flute, sitar, mellow tribal percussion… With the added value nostalgic Son Kite groove intact! Very nice track!

#06: Finally we have a New Disco Science Alliance remix… Swedish progressive trance masters remixing Swedish progressive trance masters… I smell success! This one is for the ladies – sexy, smooth, progressive, deep… And groooooveeeey! Very true to the original, yet the pace is different and the groove is even more penetrating… I dare anyone to not move to this! Amazing track!

Anyone familiar with the MPDQX label group knows that their releases ooze quality both visually and production-wise… And this is no exception… With this first step in the Colours four-some, they continue to distance themselves from the vast majority of trance labels… I for one am looking very much forward to steps 2, 3 and 4…

If I have to nitpick, I would’ve changed the order of the tracks to: 01, 02, 03, 06, 04 and finally 05 to get an ever smoother flow… Perhaps even a journey! And some artist-info in the cover would have been nice too… But who cares really – this is an amazing CDM! Highly recommended!

Profane, DeatthPosture, really nice reviews !! Thank you for this. Basically I agree with your lines, especially yours Profane.. mine would have been in the same mood, and my favs are the same too (with a big wink to the MIDIval remix, as chill out is what i'm playing)..

So I'm also with Nahimoff of course ! Besides the (great, super, big, and so on) original track, it's NDSA which impressed me the most, and brings me thrills in the pegs ! The subtleties in the rhythmix work are outstanding, and the way the "stuff" is launched after a long set up, is just incredible (in the third minute). What a bass line drive ! Oh yeeeeeah now this is ass-kicking ! MY after-hours vibrations.. Somehow evilistic, unhealthy, u know, teasing you like : "the game is not over, dude !" ... Big. Really big.

In the promotional thread dealing with this release, I felt so excited about the remix by MIDIval PunditZ, as I liked so much their music I could hear on Six Degrees Recordings compilations.. (altough I don't know their album, which should be corrected very soon). DeathPosture describes it nicely, and I'm with Profane about the radio sample. They have used it with different effects (delays, and so on), and they did it the great way ! Superb work !!! To be tested on Friday @ Inside, Emmendingen (germany)

About the Future/Past Remix, well, I really like it too. It's quite Elektro oriented (I mean, the rhythmics are Frankfurter Elektro - Check EleKtroLux label if you don't know what I mean) and will surely be a part of playlists like Anthony Rother's, Andreas Kaufelt's and the likes, plus all the open-minded broken beats turntablers. Nice !

The last thing I would like to focus on is the nice work of Marcus on the design concept. Not totally "novateur" but really effective and refreshing, especially besides a lot of covers nowadays that are very questionable... Smart minimal idea, relayed by a tasteful choice of colours !
(thank you Pantone )

So from A to Z, you wrote it already, we have here a great opening for this Colours serie, and now we all want something BIG.. the little voice tells me that we will get it..

Bravo.           .

I finally got it!!!

And it was worth the wait. My favorites here are the first mix (original) and the last (NDSA), but the Midival Punditz mix is something special as well.

THe original will no doubt be heard at almost every party for the next 6 months. The breakdown is just MASSIVE, and the way the track is written this can fit in a full-on set as well as a progressive set, and i think even commercial DJS like Oakenfold or Tiesto can play it. I played the track to a friend of mine who is into electro and he loved it as well. all in all a great track. period.

The NDSA mix is the definition of a good remix. It kept a lot from the original, but managed to turn out something thats completely new and exciting. Dark, heavy, slow groove combined with a variation of the original breakdown make this mix just as massive, however this not full on territory anymore, it just dark and pounding prog.house the way it should be done. Great!!

The Lemon8 mix was a bit of a letdown, i dont know yet if its because the track itself isnt so great or because i heard so much praise before, for example by Kai in Mushroom magazine. Its not bad, but i think NDSA did a much better job, somehow this mix loses the original character and its getting very close to cheese territory. Too close? I gotta give it some more listens.

The deedrah remix is by far the worst mix on here, very uninspired i think. What happened to this guy anyway. REload was a true GEm, i listened to that album like 1000 times. But Body&Soul was a disappointment , and here he turns out the worst mix. Maybe its because right after the outstanding original you can only look bad? I gotta listen to this in isolation from the other tracks.

The Midival Punditz remix is the better of the chill mixes, very deep and beautiful and you can definitely feel the indian touch here.
THe Future/Past mix is good too, very electroish and funky beats.

All in all I cant wait for the album, if the other tracks come close to On Air this will the absolute blaster of 2004. I hope that Atmos will also be as good, and my speakers wont make it until summer.
Grades are stupid, but i think this one will definitely be a candidate for the 10 (i'll just overlook deedrah)           Check out my album: http://www.ektoplazm.com/free-music/gay-satanic-hippie-tiefenrausch
