just got my copy in the mail and not much to add here but i will just say that son kite have actually provided here the proper journey that trance music is capable of. it resists formula but not too much so that it resists formula to a certain other formula.

the best way i can put it is freedom music. this is the music of the free world. a world of beauty and peace. and brain/body stomping.

for me every single track has a different feel but is all part of a cohesive whole. i can only admire the high concept of this set of releases. this is music for the will. the will and the world.
keep flying high. (AND COME TO NYC again SOON)           ein chadash tachat hashemesh. there is nothing new under the sun. --kohelet.

This might just be the best electronic album I have ever heard. Dance music isn't a good vehicle for all but the most obvious of emotions, but there are some very subtle evocations here: I found parts of it even slightly maudlin and wistful. It is such an intensely personal statement of art. And like all great art it is characterised by the effortless restraint that keeps everything together. son kite have complete control over both time and space here. Beautiful.

It is also, for me anyway, forms a cohesive whole, something very, very few dance releases get right. I love all of son kite's stuff but this is in a different league...

This is actually Jim Morrison (although I *think* it might be Val Kilmer playing Jim Morrison from the Doors movie).

Gee, it looks like the topic is been reviewed to a pretty big extend! What can be added more...

INSANLY AMAZING!

These guys were already 'Gods' to me before the ‘colours’ album so I guess I’ll have to invent a new kind of superlative to that word now! This is everything I could / want to expect from music and even more…

Keep it up Sebastian & Marcus and live the hype!! You guys deserve it!!

Peace,

WOW.. what can i say.. i got in a couple of listens, and i'm building up a nice review (its worth all the trouble trust me).. The inovation in this album is totally unrealistic.. there are some technics used in this album , that i would have never thought possible in trance music. The intensity level of the entire album is through the roof, and there is more than a psycadelic spark in this one..

A more detailed review still to come. I still haven't found works to describe just how great this new album is..

Thank you very much Marcus and Seb, and Peter from DS for releasing such masterpieces..           "VA - REWIRED" OUT NOW !! (techtrance invasion) ---> http://forum.isratrance.com/viewtopic.php/topic/86303/forum/9

Warning – this is really damn long.

Reviewing an album like this is difficult for me. I’ve been absorbing it for several weeks now not really knowing what to say about it or even how to begin saying it if I knew. When describing music with such emotion and feeling, one can’t simply talk about the music and convey what it is all about. The description has to in some way give an idea of what it invokes in the heart and soul – the merging of the mechanic and the instinctive. This album is both so technically brilliant and full of soul that it gives the ideal opportunity to capture both elements.

I love the daytime. A nice day in nature can be both beautiful and simple. The natural light can bring out beauty in such a few elements. Think of something so simple as a sunrise over a beach, or the morning fog in a valley. It’s not a complex web of colours, but in the right natural light, the beautiful construction of nature can be clearly seen and is more brilliant than the most intricate artwork that man can dream up.

Colours is a daytime album in that way. It’s beautiful. It’s simple. Yet it’s damned effective.

Other Side
The album starts as it ends – a simple floating melody. The sound of the first few rays of light peering over the horizon sounding in the beginning of a new day. This is “Other Side”. Starting with a simple melody and throbbing bass, slowly it builds. The sounds we’ve grown to know from Son Kite are added piece by piece, modulated and intertwined, creating an elegant build. The second time I heard this track, I was taking a walk outside and it gave me a chill I couldn’t shake as it approached the break. After a long and fantastically drawn out break, the song slowly and melodically wind its way to completion. While incredibly simple and mellow at first glance, the construction and composition in “Other Side” is enough to leave you spellbound and with tears in your eyes. This is trance. This is my favorite song on the album.

Focus
“Focus” begins with barely a warning, mixed from the previous track. A kick, a bassline, and soft pads get things going. This track serves as the perfect methodic build in intensity to what comes later in the album. After an entrancing 5 minute percussive crescendo, comes the big break – which explodes into first a solo, then a chorus of overdriven analogue (?) sounds. This WILL have the dancefloor screaming, no doubt about it.

On Air
As the grip from “Focus” is released and the track comes to a distorted end, the now-familiar atmosphere of “On Air” emerges. The title is so descriptive of this song. The intro is a floating chorus of melody, Pink Floyd-esque guitar, and an almost Orb-like (circa their Live 93 album) atmosphere. As the intro explodes into the main drive of the song, you are off, flying through the sky towards the sunset. After a small tease of retro-vibe, comes the huge break – this is something Seb & Marcus have mastered with NO comparison, the massive, elegant breakdown. Then the drive returns with the familiar melody and the song slowly floats you back down to the ground.

Game & Watch
The next song, “Game & Watch”, is an interesting one – at first listen one hears the rolling bassline and it reminds ya of so much damned melodic full-on that is out there. Huh? From Son Kite? But there is something more here. Just a little under the surface. It’s delicate. It’s not assaulting your ears – it’s softly massaging your soul. This is as far from typical morning full-on as the rest of the album is. There are no cheap tricks here – there are no extraneous sounds, no excessive builds. This is Son Kite stepping out of their normal bounds and creating a melodic masterpiece. While some may view this as a step towards a cheaper sound, I see a wonderful experiment in diversity – and the experiment works beautifully.

My god, we’re only through 4 tracks?

Let Us Be
Next up is the restrained low-groover and vocally influenced “Let Us Be”. This track feels (to me) like older German trance. I’m almost reminded of a more upbeat and dancey rendition of what the Saafi Bros. were doing in the mid ‘90s. Blissful, wailing vocal samples flow, along with a dubby low-end, through the tense break toward an explosion of melody. Beautifully nostalgic, but wonderfully composed. This begs for a stomping party in a forest.

Now it’s time to jam.

The Stars Within Us
A choir of acoustic guitars bring in “The Stars Within Us”, leaving it with a bass-heavy groove. Hints of melody, sharp stabs, and distorted synth sounds drive this track to (once again) a HUGE break. This is pure dancefloor mayhem – one of those songs perfectly constructed for causing maximal damage to your leg muscles. 100% no-frills drive until the end.

Jukebox
“Jukebox” was the most confusing track on this album for me, initially. After the first couple listens, it hadn’t grabbed me yet. Too happy, too bouncey, too *something*. Then I heard it on a pair of Senheiser HD 25s, and everything changed. This is fucking intense – the way the bass chugs along with the build coming through in the repeating vocal samples is utterly mindblowing. Hearing this on a full system under the sun would destroy every muscle in my body. This is a natural daytime song. Once again, amazing dancefloor material.

Made to Move
Next, we are given a reminder of the percussive genius of Seb and Marcus. “Made to Move” is a straightforward progressive-tek-stomper much like “Reewo” or the “Centrifuge” remix on the Cross-Link comp from 2002. But, as with the rest of this album, there is a bit more melody. Around the middle of the track, and amost Infusion-like lead finds its way in and dominates through the break. In the end, it’s driving, percussive, uplifting, and absolutely wonderful. I imagine this one will be a favorite of DJs.

Colours
Sadly, all wonderful days must come to an end. After 3 straight dancefloor killers, we are brought again to the simple sounds of the sun beginning to disappear behind the horizon. The day has passed – we have had the emotional sunrise and morning with the beginning of the album, flown through the sky in the middle, and stomped through the afternoon. Now the final piece, “Colours”, brings it all back to where we started – simplicity and emotion. Throbbing acidic bass, organic percussion, slow melodies, rhythmic chirps, and wailing violins stir together to create a masterpiece of melancholic beauty. Once again, we are transported 10 years back to the roots of this music we call trance. It’s simple, yet it is so perfectly composed that it conveys a galaxy of feeling in just over 8 minutes. As it comes to an end, this leaves both a smile on the face and a tear in the eye. There is no more perfect way for this album to end.

The verdict.....
Overall, this album is pure class. It’s more than a collection of songs – it’s a story. It’s a palette of feelings, colours and emotions for one to paint a meaning of all their own. For me, it’s a day spent under the sun in nature – the perfect day. Every song here fits flawlessly. This has earned a spot with those select 5 or 6 albums over my lifetime which has touched me to my core. Absolutely fantastic work by Seb & Marcus.

Favorites – 1, 4, 5, 9
Overall rating – if you’ve read this far, it’s unnecessary.

Eagerly awaiting the chance to hear this in the live setting at the Nalanda festival in June.

Ok, this album starts off with a nice trancy intro, that leads to the begining of what just might be the next big thing since The Elvis remix by GMS ok ok ok,
getting more serrious,.
It lifts off with the sound of a whistel, that turns into a wave of emotion, with a soft drum lead and a nice sample. As the song builds up, and the bassline thickens,
a funkadelik groove starts off..A nice warm trance fills this track as it gets you ready to see son kites true COLOURS. Buckel your seatbelts, cause the ride only begins here. Get ready for the OTHER SIDE of son kite.

As the two songs collide, a nice transition is made, that very nicely keeps the flow of this new side alive. As this transition ends, a new, more powerfull bassline
comes into play. With more aggression, and less trance alows listeners to FOCUS more on the progression of the song, then on the trance. As it ends with an electroish touch, this just shows how much talent these guys really have.

There's not much to say about this track, excepte that its probably the reason you picked up the album. With warped buildups, and massive destruction in the basslines
makes this track perfect for ON AIR broadcasting at a party near you.

As the air denses, and the night falls, even son kite adapts to every climate. GAME AND WATCH combines Silicon sound, Wizzy Noise and Wrecked Machines all in one. With wizzy as the bassline, a silicon trance, and wrecked style hats, combined with a son kite progression makes this one of the most powerful tracks on the album.
(note that the other artists did not colaborate on this track, just influenced im sure).

"LET US BE" must be son kites response to critic from this track.. sounding like an uplifting trance song that Paul Oakenfold himself would love to mix, I find that its the dullest one of the album (sorry bout the negativity, but every jewel has its flaw). It starts the same way it finishes, with small intensity buildups in the trance of the song.
Really nothing to smash your heads on the wall over. Its a little high pitched sounding as well.

As things move on, a new day is born, with a fresh new melody. Son kite is back to there old tricks, tickling our minds with there psycadelica. A true performance in this one that reflects "THE STARS WITHIN US".

Can you say FUNKAAAAAAAAY?? Woah, funky like a JUKEBOX maybe?? With a housy feel to it, this one builds up quit slowly compared to the rest of there tracks. Not really my style of tracks i'd play at a party, but i'm sure a diversified dj will find great use of this one.

In my opinion, probably the best track from the album. This one represents classical son kite talent, with the return of that good old "Air play" rolling tam tam sound.. you all have to love that one.. it makes me freak.. I can't even begin to explain just how great this one sounds.. With an electro track, and a clubby feel, all within the limits of psytrance of course. Its totally MADE TO MOVE.

What a great way to end an album then with the sound that began it.. this little effect adds a unique flow that ALL other cd's lack.. It concludes the story, but leaves room for a sequal. Probably the heavyest track on the album, COLOURS shows calmness, makes you feel like your beachside drinking some tea.

This album is just pure genious for psytrance lovers.. Its proggressive, the trances are enjoyable, never to HI toned for our ears (not like a 303). Its a great listen after a phat joint..

I hope you guys don't give up, or change to drastically, because your style is here to stay.. we need more music like this (emotional) played out in parties. I really gets me thinking.

Enjoy the ride, because this one passes like a cool breaze.

right, i finally feel like i have digested this album. and the key point is that it is an album, a proper one. Not something that is so very regular in this scene, an album which actually contains some expression and not a jumbled sequence of dancefloor "hits". I remember a few years ago, everytime i purchased an album of psychedelic trance i would tell my self never again, because always they were a disappointment.. if only this had been released then, if only all artist albums in our scene contained this much thought, this much sheer musicality.

mm, it is of course possible to talk about the relative merits and demerits of track x and track y, but i feel there is enough of this already here now, and such an analysis does not, in my opinion, address what is so remarkable about the release. A coherent muscial statement is a feat in any genre or style, to make one in an area as, lets face it, narrow as this little patch of dance music that we all like to sit in is astonishing. It is thereore not really a suprise that the music on this record manages to transcend the boundaries and tribal divisions that occupy us here so much (progressive/not progressive / left/right and so on) whilst at the same time reaching into broader realms entirely (breaking my little rule and refering to a particular track, the stars within us could almost be prog rock or smthing at the start).

awesome.. sincerely, i was always going to like this record, i didn't know it would be this much.
