I'll start with the end: I see nothing psychedelic about this album, and that pisses me off. Production is top notch, the music gives a rather complete feeling, but the grinding power is all gone. The energy of these tracks ranges from fluffy grooves to morning drives, but nothing that I can say "this is out of the ordinary" about. Just like a more Scandinavian version of Cosma's last album, more to the house side of things.

Son Kite are one step closer to becoming the Der Dritte Raum of the psytrance scene, but one step farther from being the innovative underground lighthouse that they were only 3 years ago with Perspectives Of...

Goodbye underground, hello wave your hands in the air. I know many people will say this is nothing bad, and that emotion is what music is all about and that they don't need innovative music they just want good music and all that. I know that this album is MUCH more communicative than any of Son Kite's previous works, but also lacks the depth that made Son Kite stand out. Everything fits in place, the puzzle is complete, the picture is vivid... but I don't like being given something that doesn't leave room for thought - and while this album is NOT 'stupid' music, BUT, I don't get that feeling of "those clever sneaky bastards" I had when listening to Perspectives Of... and that's a damn shame, because that's what made me love progressive psy in the first place.           http://www.myspace.com/Hooloovoo222

I got this album two days ago and heard it 3 times and can say this:

1. It has super quality sound work.

2. It ( like Plastikman in Techno ) paves the way for those producers that like to make a track with only 5 sounds and still get away with it [ which is BY FAR much harder then writing it with 60 channels open ]

3. They do what they like, and I respect that so much being an artist myself. I know how hard it is when u know what works best still do what u feel and want to do, without thinking 'POCKET' all the time. Track 5 in the CD would be rather amazing dust raiser if they would use a trance kik instead of the 'NO KIK' they used. But the NO KIK does awesome job after u get used to it.

This is called art.

4. Track number 4. Don't get those that for them Son Kite not allowed to do POP music. Why ? Only the bands that were marked in gooooey Oooze can do cheese stuff with rolling basslines? And if it dun good, and in a good taste? I love melodic trance with super good sound and the YO feel... I just dont like when out of 9 given tracks on an album 8.5 sound this way. But when it is 1 out of much more others it is wonderfull. Son Kite are tallented enough to make any style, and show this. I think it is placed right in the middle and also the no. 5 track, I bet it's not a random reason that is placed right behind number 4. It's like:

'WE KNOW HOW TO DO IT ( 4 ) BUT WE LOVE TO DO THIS ( 5 )' and it is great!!!

Other then that love the mumbling breaks and the morphing on 'On Air' track.

A goodie!!           A man with a "master plan" is often a woman

This is one of the best albums i have ever heard, got my copy today and just started listening to it... I'm listening to the track number 5 and is absolutely amazing...
I think people should stop to categorize music.. full on,progressive, minimal... music is music, don't put it in a box with a label saying what style it is... This is just great music, that's it... It's far away from what I'm playing and releasing but I'm in love with it...
I have been waiting for this since I heard your live set in samothraki...

Massive respect.

hey yuli, i think you're referring to my critique of track 4, i dont think its pop, i never said that, i just happen to really dislike rolling basslines, no matter who does them.
of course son kite has the right to make tracks with rolling basslines, im sure lots of peole will dig this song, its well done, no doubt about it, but im just not one of these people.

but who cares, the other 8 tracks are great.           Check out my album: http://www.ektoplazm.com/free-music/gay-satanic-hippie-tiefenrausch

I think this is one of the very best coming out lately. I don't care about categorisations, that's just childish in my opinion.

Anyway this album is awesome.

hi all, I've been reading this forum for a long time but haven't ever registered, but now I had to register so I can praise this masterpiece! Son Kite was the reason I got interested in the more progressive side of psy. I loved the previous albums, the tracks on various compilations and ofcourse the mindblowing liveset@nosturi,Fin.

and here it is.. the new album. when I heard the samples @ psyshop.com for the first time I instantly knew that this new sound is going to divide some opinions. this one is more melodic and emotionally charged and usually that doesn't work for me but this time it does!!! when I heard the cd through for the first time I was just mesmerized. these guys really can't do anything wrong. they have the golden touch

after this there is no doubt about my favourite act: SON KITE

congratulations Seb&Marcus for this masterpiece, you have created a perfect soundtrack for my spring&summer 2004! hope to see u soon here in Finland again

really waiting for the dvd...

I won't repeat the brilliant lectures of Son Kite music by Aje and Russ and all the other specialists.. but start up again with Kaz' reflection. Basically he has a good point, but I don't consider it completely in the same way.. Creation is something that asks total implication from the artists, and innovation is a quest that is permanent, and most of all wearing out. Whatever one's domain is : design, music, architecture, plastic arts and so on, all of these have nowadays arrived to a kind of shortness of breath. And what is happening in concrete terms ? I.E Car design.. There is nearly neither brand nor independant design studio that hasn't elaborated a concept car deeply inspired or simply winking its past productions. When the future is foggy, it is comforting to have a short look behind. In Creation this is something decontracting, that can give a new breath to set out again with more clear and ordered ideas. Like a musician would practise his scales to perfect his technique.

To apply this to this album, Aje, Russ and the others felt an Harthouse and somehow old school vibration. They are in it completely ! Harthouse has been something so exciting in the 90's for so many people, in germany and the neighbour countries that it reached a dimension of setting up rules for the few years following dance music underground production. And nowadays, with the fall of quality releases, maybe it was about to remind the people what "the" vibration is. Listening to this album is bringing me back to my early outings in germany around 96 where precisely Der Dritte Raum learned to me one night what dance music is truely.. Rare are the deejays or live-acts that could make me improve so radically and durably in the quest of "the" vibration. So, when I'm hearing Son Kite's album, the seek of innovative thing is overhelmed by the physical excitation, yes physical ! Those thrills in the nape that are so agreable while remembering a party, a place, some people, some smiles upon all.. The spice of the nightlife ! The smiles. And this album makes me smile, yes.. And i'm sure Seb and Marcus smiled a lot in the studio while perfecting their loops. And i'm also sure i'm not the only one smiling. Why ? Thanx, deservedly to the top quality of the production. This album, if not purely avant-garde is basically a reminder, a "concentré" of all the positive feelings one can reach in a party. It's made in a perfect rythmic way and it will learn many people what the vibration in the mid-nineties was, besides Great-Britain, in Germany. The locomotive of Europe in these days regarding Electronic Dance Music. This is were everything came from, and even Juan Atkins, the father of Techno admitted it in interviews. Son Kite are just winking this, in a so nice way, and I'm sure their future stuff will have evolved a lot thanks to this step, this exercice.

The reviewers have written some superb describing lines so I didn't want to spread with some more, I just tried to express how this album affects me deeply, according to my tastes and my passed experiences, the things that have durably marked me in thousands of outings (the huge majority in Germany, because of my geographic position)

So thank you sincerely Seb and Marcus for this album ! Really impressive work.

Ok lets review our own local trance heroes from Malmoe, Son kite's third album Colours....

First of all , big up for the nice cover and the colors concept, very good job mates!
So lets move on with the review:

Other Side
1) Nice little intro, which gets u in the mood, then some Johnny Depp-ish sample along with some toms warms up for the track. The track continues with the standard son kite subbass and progresses on with some Moroder-esque bassline.. Nice one!

Focus
2) This one is a bit more minimal, reminds me more of older son kite stuff with few elements.
After the break some mono lead emerges, feels a bit electro i must say:) I like the way they manipulate the lead, they move it in and out...

On air
3) Great atmospheric intro , then it starts with some arpeggiated bassline and a kick. Its one hell of a ride and the breakdown is totally wicked.. One of the highlights on this Cd

Game & Watch
4) The most "full-on-ish" track on this cd, it has a rolling bassline and a melody going on and off.. Powerful stuff..

Let us be
5) This has some nice atmospheres, i dont know why but it reminds me of Holden productions a bit, maybe cos of the reverbed effects...

The stars within us
6) Starts of with a guitar intro, which is kinda cool, starts of a bit minimal, great drive. When we reach the break the guitars come back and although the break is a bit long (2mins) it charges and it is well worth the wait as another monolead hits us..
Great track

Jukebox
7) A bit lo-fi track , it contains some crazy organs and some crazy sample.. Very dirty track

Made to move
8) This is one fof those tribal trax that son kite are known for. Like that darbuka..

Colours
9) The intro that started off the cd is present here aswell, its a nice track to end the cd , reminds me of Aiwana a bit. Very relaxing, it has some nice atmosphere, then it ends with that intro again.

Conclusion:
Good album overall, for sure my favorite progressive psytrance release this year so far. Although I must say I think it lacks one or two high octane stomp sessions. Anyway the way the cd is mixed and flows on like a journey is great. Great job boys, u make us proud being from Malmoe. Let's hope we see some more good progressive psytrance releases this year!!

8,5/10
