I'll second (or third... or fourth...?) the Aphex Twin Selected Ambient Works recommendations, along with Plastikman.
A recent enough discovery for myself that fits snuggly into this category would be KLF's "Chill Out" album. Pure, unadulterated chill. Absolutely perfect to zone out with.
[EDIT TO ADD:]
HOW COULD I FORGET?!...
DJ Krush and a Japanese trumpet maestro Toshinori Kondo collaborated on a beautiful disc entitled "Ki Oku." I cannot rightfully praise this enough. Check it out.

The original sountrack of Blade Runner definately deserves a second mention, as do FSOL and Plastikman (and Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works vol. 1 and 2, if I'm already at it), but allow me to add some music for dreaming:
Autechre (all tracks where they don't clang too much) with some tracks you can REALLY sink (sync?) in (try Bass Cadet for instance, very good example of what Autechre does), Twerk for some loungish microhouse for those that must hear a bassdrum. Metamatics is also an act to flow with, Boards of Canada for some unkown reason haven't been mentioned yet, and might as well add Nightmares on Wax.
Waking up with Mouse on Mars is a recommendation after that kind of sleep btw

KLF's 'Chill Out' is my favourite, also TUU albums, some of the Biosphere's (Substrata, Shenzhou, Fires Of Ork 2, Birmingham Frequencies) and from some time I have nice dreams when listening to Subradial 'Bioloophorm 1' but it's also a little bit haunted so be careful if You're very sensitive |

i would reccommand ''cavern of sirens'' by vidna obmana and steve roach
''Cavern of Sirens is filled with the trademark drones, exotic percussion, and psychedelic ambiences common to the work of both Obmana and Roach, and their fans will not be disappointed. ''
