Vertigo Records and a few others offering their music direct cutting out the middle man... I would assume that route has it own set of limitations as well...

I think one of the big limitations is now, "independent producers, no longer need a label, unless they want a marketing partner." Furthermore, in this scene, so many labels do not pay.. So an independent needs to be in some of these stores like beatport, trackitdown, juno downloads etc..           The speed past light..

Hate to say it, i've been buying from beatport for a while now. Had a quick look at juno and hard too find and can't really see how they improve things???

Artists and labels are representative of the past decade and present in a large variety.

Here in the UK, anyway, 15 years ago buying vinyl involved learning which backstreets had a record shop and then it was a lottery as to what was in stock. Now you can get cd's in Camden or from the internet. I kinda like the selection available from Beatport..

I don't know how this scene started when it was vinyl...they can't have selling any more then now (there was a time around 95/6 when you could buy the latest comps on cd in hmv)

If there is a genuine alternative, i would really like to know....

Back in the vinyl days it was perfectly possible to earn a fair bit from a vinyl release. I don't remember the exact figures for our own releases back then but 2-track EPs could sell 1000+ copies, with the artist making a decent slice of each sale.

ok...but surely there's enough brazilians and israelis buying music to make mp3's over the net a viable industry (i only mention these nations as they obviously have strong/active psytrance scenes)

I would just have been suprised if beatport was not selling psytrance well, and feel it represents a good variety of music.

I would be sad if the artist gets stitched up and receives a small fraction of the fee. However, in respect of the amounts sold on vinyl 'back in the day', there are far more artists and labels in existance now, all competing for a limited amount of money, ie, from our pockets. Far greater odds of seeing some of that cash in '95!

Another side of it is, i downloaded from an illegal filesharing website for about 6-7 years untill 2010. Beatport changed my habits as it offers me value for money, and i only have to buy the tracks i actually want. I got very dispondant buying cd's from psy-shop for $15-16 and only really liking 1 or 2 tracks...not efficient.

This was partly down to the music at the time....listening to earlier stuff gives me a tingle down my back that music from from the mid noughties rarely does...i feel the music was also excellent around 2001....i slso feel the music is rather excellent right now...which is why i spend about £400/year on beatport, so at least the scene is seeing money from me for the first time in a decade!!!!

p.s. you've obviously got your own selling format Colin, fairplay, I hope that's really successful for you! Also, really like the sonic species remix, exactly down my street, i may become a customer soon ;-)

Big labels are buying their own stuff and that's why the same artists occupy beatport top 10/100...Deal with it,it's pure marketing.

I don't know what your problem is? I'm getting my music from beatport since 4 years and I always find what I want. I agree there's is a lot of crap released, but you can also find all the good stuff there. There are so many different ways to find new and good music. Sometimes it takes time and needs a little bit of effort, but you will be rewarded at the end.           http://soundcloud.com/catweazle-psytrance-music
