Hi guys,

could you please reccommend me a sweet laptop for production. Price up to $3500 (less if possible but willing to pay for the right machine). Plan to use it with Ableton and Cubase but would not mind giving Logic ago, so potentialy open to Mac Book Pro (though spec for spec it seems overpriced).

Also will be using Komplete 6 and hopefully Virus Ti 2. I have Motu Ultralite Mk3, these are tempramental with windows, some machines in particular, though new power books use i7 chips now so could be no different.

Ideally I would like quadcore i7 with 8 gigs of RAM.

So, please suggest away and thank you in advance!!!

Peace!!!           -------------- Dark & Twisted Night Psy --------------

It's not I like to have space to play with, especially when applying effects on top of effects on top of synths. I would not mind more, but it becomes costly.           -------------- Dark & Twisted Night Psy --------------

Well, 3 or 4 gigs of ram is minimum these days I see no problem with 8. I worked with a drummer who had 14 gigs ram (although he works off his comp because of disability).

My question is, at that price, why not get a tower PC? Unless you want the laptop to make gigs easier, but nonetheless I don't think setting up a PC on stage is much harder than a big amp. Main thing is tower PC's are far easier to maintain, upgrade, and cool (And cooling is a HUGE point for performance, especially in a hot crowded club). If you want power at that price and if it is strictly for music, get a full computer. A tower PC at that price would dominate any laptop.

Tower is certainly a consideration. But I plan to travel a lot and I need it to be easy to travel around with. I think solid laptop and Ti will be fine performance wise, and also easy enough to carry. I just need peoples advises on laptops and their experiences with them and reccomendations on particular makes/models.

I would rather get 4 gigs which IMO is plenty for music production, ensure I get optimal CPU etc. and with money saved put it towards an upgrade of monitors or something else like some good sample packs or something... Apple for me is number one for reliability but the thing is Apple have shifted away from a focus on laptops and I have noticed this in their latest updates... they are much more concerned with iPad & iPhone which is where the money is at right now.

I was planning to get a new Macbook Pro later this year, but I am now considering getting a PC based Asus laptop as for less than a 13" Macbook pro you can get a larger screen and much better parts.

Also seeing as music style are straying far from this scene I'm thinking of renewing my old acquaintance with FLstudio which I think is still only PC based... I always found it much easier to form basic broken beat/DnB style stuff in FL then finish it all off in another program like Cubase or something.

Avoid Toshiba as I have owned around 4 and the longest laste 18 months before just dying (and it was 100% dedicated only for music, no internet or nothing)... Sony is a rip off and the one staring with Q (escapes my mind) always burns out the graphics n' screen within 12 months... Dell is just a sham 100%

Asus all the way for me for now I think... I had one with my last job and it ran music software, games & internet and never had many issues.

The other option, depending where you live, is to go to the Chinese owned (where I live) shops and get them to make you a custom built lappy. Often not that expensive & you know 100% what is in it to meet your specs!           I hate you, you hate me, we are all so hap hap happy!

BTW my nephew is a drummer who also has quite a restrictive physical disability but he records his drum tracks on a 6 year old laptop with 1 gig of RAM

Then I help him process the recordings on my current 2 gig macbook no probs           I hate you, you hate me, we are all so hap hap happy!

Cheers, thanks for your answer. Same thoughts in regards to Apple. I'm already aiming for i7 so good CPU is covered I reckon. Money will also be spent on good software/hardware and potentially on sample packs too (thanks for suggesting).

Personally I had a very good experience with Dell before, though I know a lot of people don't like them.

Asus sounds good, any info on how it fares with Motu soundcards? What soundcard do you use?

Will also look into the custom built option, cheers!!!

there is a few topics about soundcards and laptops I think. Also check dj section. It is well important to make sure they are working together. So also check other music forums (hiphop for that matter, just to figure out what works).
4 gigs is indeed enough i'd say to work nicely on a laptop. You could also use your TI as a soundcard i think. That might be worthwhile to look into if you are travelling alot.
I wouldnt go bigger than a 15" laptop. Cubase doesnt always seem to work well on a macbook. So also look into that. Logic does of course.           soundcloud.com/supergroover

Check out these guys:

http://www.adkproaudio.com/

They build PCs and Laptops specifically designed for music production. I have no personal experience with them but the specs look good.

This is their highest spec Laptop:

Intel Core i7 Quad/ 6 core Processor

* Up to 3.33GHz Extreme 6 Core
* Up to 12GB DDR 3 1333 Memory
* 17" 1920x1200 WUXGA Display
* Up to 3 500G 7200 RPM hard drive
* DVD-RW/ Blue Ray option
* GTX285 1GB
* firewire/4 USB/cardreader
* Up to 3 yr Inclusive Warranty
* Glan/Wifi/Blueetooth included
* Lifetime Tech Support
* DVI out for 2nd Monitor

Prices also look reasonable and they use Texas Instruments Firewire Chipsets which are much better than the Nvidia firewire chipsets.

If I had the spare cash I'd probably get one...

No worries, you're welcome.

A friend of mine was considering buying one of these when he was looking for a laptop.

In the end he bought a 17" Mac Book Pro because he wanted to use Logic...

Using Toshiba here for 7 years and still goin good. Got a mb pro with 4gb ram and works good enough and u can stack enough effects over other and watever. Everyone has their own experiences with equipment so somethin good for me maybe not for you but on that note, toshiba is a good brand comparitively .The thing with pc/laptop is always to get the best available at the time, things become obsolete within weeks in these days.

The fool : thanks for the link , it looks like a serious config there
