So I was less than a metre or so away expecting to see a master at work... What I saw was absolutely disgusting and made us leave the dancefloor.
Psykovsky was tweaking so many knobs, none in time with, or affecting any single part of a track.. It was an absolute joke.
So is it a known thing that he is pushing play on a pre made set and faking and no one cares or? And don't say he wasnt because I watched literally close up for over an hour in utter disbelief. Respect is long long gone for this guy. |

Mushrooms make you do crazy stuff. Look at Mario he jumps on animal heads and fights with dragons. |

In my circles its thought that at least the vast majority of what he does is just for show. I still like his sets at parties when it comes to the audio, although the last time i saw him play was two years ago.

wow big surprise!
Do you really think anyone play real live.
Let me answer that question for you. No!
It will be an extended debate to tell you why.

Not trying to be an asshole but point is that people who get surprised over the fact that the psytrance scene has artists that does not play live live in a bubble (IMO).
And show me one artist that play live (100%). Some claim they play live but fact is still that most of their music is synced from a computer and prerecorded. All they do is twist some knobs and play a few notes on a midi keyboard.
Only a handful play live with musicians on stage and I do not really consider them genuine psytrance as their music is more a fusion of world/trance.

Yeah no one plays live much in this scene, I think it's often more than just laziness, but I can't be bother laying out all the reasons.
The last electronic artist I saw play real live was Jeff Mills but he was basically just smashing our great techno beats on his 909.
I remember seeing UK acid fiend The Geezer in the early '00s real live with 808, 909, 2x303 & a sampler through a big mixer play for 90 minutes. Nothing has ever come close to that for me.
Ableton make it so easy to just simply organose an automated live set, why would you bother taking all your gear? Especially in a scene notorious for not paying the musicians.

OOOD apparently plays live. Real live!
I am usually playing fx and leads over my tunes, and trigger them via midi keyboard and also effect them with some plugins via potentiometers. I am working on a more live set version, basically consisting of loops that can be played and combined in all kinds of ways over the course of several hours. Sort of something that cannot be repeated! Would that qualify as live to any of you?

The problem as I see it is that 98% of the population want a job they enjoy and that's easy. So playing "live" with a laptop became so easy with Ableton to fake 98% of our scene does that.
2% of the population actually likes a challenge and I think that translates in to our scene, so you get about 2% of acts who go the hard yards and do a real live show.
I also think there's a very prominent attitude that if you do the hard yards in the studio why do it again live?
Again for the challenge IMO but most ppl want it easy. Modern human nature.
Eat Static for sure are in the 2%. Only saw them once in the late 90's and was amazing.

I think problem here is more the shitty sound he played then the fact of faking the live as most they also have prerecorded set but when the music is groovy and make people dance who cares?? as long he does not exagerate with his knob twisting...

I would like to ask, let's say Aaron and Kristian like established producers what do you consider as a proper live now days?
Upavas explained what he is doing, and that's fine from my point of view, but seeing a photo from recent Sun festival where you can see that Benji for his set uses traktor software, well that's just got me wonder? Yeah, good set it was, but... |
