I'm afraid I have to agree with soset. The music preceeding the Penta live set was building a really nice warm atmosphere, exactly what I had hoped to find. However, this was rapidly put to death. The bass beat was really harsh and monotonous and never really gave a chance to any of the other sounds which were just thrown on top of it, only to fall into oblivion. It would be impossible to assign any label containing the word trance to what I heard in that set. I appreciate that it is not easy to play live, but that doesn't really excuse anything.
There is a very obvious indicator of how your music is being received, and that is the dance floor. Quiet easy to find since it's right in front of you. When you have 15 people dancing and 100 people standing around drinking beer and talking, then you should probably think about changing what you are playing.
Psychedelic trance can do many things. It can transport you to places of wonder, it can provide your body with an opportunity to truly express itself, and it can link groups of people together in a particular form of ecstatic communion. When the music is really hitting the right spot, the dance floor look as if it contains a group entity and the whole thing moves in synchronous waves. This entity will contain not only the dancers, but also the dj, the music, the artwork, and everything else connected to the party. Achieving this state should be the sole aim of the dj, and the reward is the tremendous influx of energy that he, or she receives.
Anyway, on a more upbeat note, many thanks to the organisers for cleaning up the place, providing seating, improving the sound system, and generally creating a setting with great potential. Let's hope that future parties fulfil that potential. |

- Flavorself- Im not sure what your deffinition of trance is:
but in my book trance is a a state of consciouness brought on by repetative rythmic percussion.
Not a text book deffinition but it fits what the genre of music aims for as well as what has been celebrated by certain indiginous cultures for eons.
Granted , Penta's music is very strait ahead and lacks on any real funk, but it mostly certainly, and undeniably is trance. Perhaps flavor, trance is not the genre you are really looking for. Im not critizing your tastes and what you may like or not like, but from a text book deffinition i cant really think of many acts that fill that idea of trance so cleanly as Penta.
As for the dj /live act dance floor aspect.
As a dj it is most deffinatley your job to watch and control the dance floor. If its starts to shrink, change things up a bit , move to a different style to keep peoples interest. After all as a dj you should have a arsenal of music at your hands with which to do this.
A live act however is there to play their music , period end of story. Maybe the crowd may or may not like it, but thats that. if your live your playing your set of your music that most liley has been planned and programed weeks in advance.
Very little deviation if any is possible at all.
Partygoers i think should have a idea of what and who they are going to see. Dont go to see Penta and expect to hear Eskimo or Son Kite. The same goes in reverse.
Thats just how it is.
Im sorry that you did not enjoy Penta, his sound while many like it, deffinatley is not for everyone, but to say its not trance....
anyways sounds like Nikita inflicted his trademark brand of audio assault and dance floor destruction (interpret that how you will) upon you New Yorkers, and sound s like it was a great party. I hope to find my way out east to experiance one of your better parties sometime in the not to distant future.... |

ok finally recovered from this intense musical experience. i got there and yuri was spinning some night stuff...not the kind of mixing i expected from him but good tracks nonetheless. i think the morning is his forte but anyway onto NIKITA PENTA...an exc excellent dj with crunchy, funky, full music but never murky. his music is very complex and made for experienced dancefloors. he got the ideal timeslot..nice job TDC 230-5? perfect for the dark twisted night sounds from this russian giant. next was mukhti who built straight from the groove that penta established. . .i love it when the djs communiicate and really integrate the previous set into their own. finally dj babla rendered all of the intense nighttime energies into a flowing morning burst of sunlight. beginning with a killer hindi remix(surprisingly not cheesy) the hindi vocals were actually modulated directly into the trance acting like a sort of synth line. babla really impressed me with his flawless mixing and energy rousing morning stuff. was there a bit of s-range in there. i couldnt tell but great manipulation of morning melodies.
the only downside to this party was a lack of chill area. there was no place to really escape. i feel like for the next one things would be greatly improved if the upstairs were opened and couches or something a bit more comfortable then the benches downstairs. anyway liquid-vision: thank you so much for the chai at the end, it was perfect, djs, promoters, fellow dancers thank you for coming together, making a fantastic ny trance night come alive.
ein chadash tachat hashemesh. there is nothing new under the sun. --kohelet. |

Very strange I see 2 people who just registered into this forum just to tell me that they didn’t like Penta live set (this pretty much means they don’t like Penta in general, cause he was playing live using many of his (imho great tracks)... so what do I say to this ... Guys you are first 2 ppl I hear that from, please, after any of our partys come talk to me, will listen to Penta music together and think what parts of it that you didn’t like ...
I expected any kind of negative reviews but not this ... so far I am sorry but I don’t believe this!!! Penta is the best musician out of the whole trance scene
And now about other issues - we working on it and it will get better , will be a chill out area , couches and even better sound , and much more adjustments will be made , as you see place is under construction and the whole TDC crew is spending all the available time and resources to make this place more improved and comfortable enough for you to spend your nights at !!!

yes i agree with Nik, Penta is the best trance producer out there... I've seen a dull party turn insane as soon as he starts to play on more than one occasion. his music is so unique and intelligent and funny, and combined with his stage presence as an artist this makes for the best live acts/dj sets ever. i almost had a heartattack, in a good way, the last time he played. and usually everyone loves Penta, regardless of what style of trance they prefer...
sorry for those who did not enhoy, but for those that did... it must have been a hell of a trip, mwah ha ha

Actually Nick I heard Penta twice (the first time at sound spices about a year ago) and I have to say that last time I enjoyed his set a lot more. But it’s all a question of taste coz as for the party itself I really liked it, the music played wasn’t my cup of tea (liked Bablas set more than the rest), I gess I’m not a “dark psy” person”. But I met some old faces and I was clearly that much afford was putted into organizing this event. Good going guys.

@zero
thanks for the kind words on the first track and my set.......we still need to work on it....... its basically my brother "droozi's" creation.......hopefully we can make that a smasher of a track.
@grguy
thanks for the compliment buddy !!!!!!!!
just a small piece of advise to everybody who is worrying abt pentas set.......... music from 2 artists can never be the same so in my opinion everyone should hear all the ranges of trance that there are....... i personally am a more morning person..... but i loved opening up my mind to a new darker, harder style that he played.......
peace to all............

the djing at this party was absolutley horrendous...
i came in and babla was playin some morning tunes to warm up everyone
and then penta comes on...wtf...i was expecting alot more from penta...that was the worst live set i have ever heard in my life...and he continue playing the darkest music i have ever heard....i love dark music i heard dj theo play in goa and thought it was amazing...but penta was horrible... and if the crowd isnt into it shouldnt the dj's realize that and change it...alot of inexperience at this party
babla and the rest of the fools organizing trance parties in nyc need to leran how to dj...u dont go from light trance into the darkest trance in the world and then again into light trance to make the crowd dance and then again really hard
the sound system was also ridic...those subwoofers were an incredibly bad idea esp with penta djing...it was just too hard and too monotonous...
plus ther was no energy at this party...the void party had mad energy and mad good vibes
i am def not hitting up another party in nyc for a long time...best to wait till i go back to bombay and head to goa
very bummmer party and penta am very dissapointed in ur skills

Trick
Babla played last, U R talking about Uri probably mate in general his dj skills R not bad at all (considering small NYC verity of dj that actually can play at a party) but he wasn’t him self that night that I have to agree with U.
We all (most) agree that more work need to B done but it’s nice to C a group of PPL that realize that coz I know that they will try to improve. We don’t have a big scene here in NY so organizing parties hard coz not a lot of folks got any experience so they need to learn and it takes time

@Trick,
First of all Babla played last - secondly if you are going to a party where you know that Penta will be playing - shouldnt you expect dark music? I mean wtf - Do you go to a Red Hot Chilli Peppers concert and expect to listen to Rap - thats stupid. I think Pentas set was very good, very dark as expected - mukti set was killer too and ofcourse bablas was as expected mind blowing. So all in all it was a good party - please next time you go to a party atleast research about what kind of music the main act plays - that way you will not be disapointed. |

sorry not babla i meant uri but babla still played some lame tunes..hindhi music mixed with trance wtf dont make india look so stupid
@droozi
plz dont tell me wat to expect from penta...i probably have been to better, bigger,darker and more parties then u have in ur life...
if u read my thread u would have seen i wrote that i love dark music...i heard dj theo play in goa and in bombay and am friends with tool and dash who play super dark trance
so dont tell me that i dont kno what to expect
i was expecting super dark music from penta but still he played horrible...it was not a good dark set at all
and if u think he played well u need to get ur ears check and go to some better parties
bc if people in nyc think that that was a good party then u do not have any clue wat people are doing in the rest of the world because they are all going much crazier
i guess "ignorance is bliss" but not for people that know high quality trance parties and this was not one of them
and i def agree with grguy..by saying this was a bad party...which it was...the organizers will try and imrpove...that is all i want to have the quality of parties in nyc equal to the rest of the world...
but by saying that this was a good party u will continue to have a lame scene and make trance look bad

Glad to see everybody liked this night, Penta sure does play dark music and his music is amazing. Babla would never dissapoint any 1 when he plays , he has been playing for years now way before i started too. So even if u dont lik the music Trick i think you should not comment and if u do give positive vibes and comments. Wish i was there for the party...
keep rocking nYc
