I use an older Dell Inspiron(8200) edition and a Nobalus, both work great with Ableton! Absolutaly get rid of Vista if you get a new pc machine! XP works great for me...here's a good resource

I have friends how use parrallels on Intel Macs'... reports are good for running windows software...i've heard that the new boot-camp runs good, too.

I have been noticing quite often in this thread... which is the preference of Xp over Vista. Why is that? Could someone care to explain a lil more in detail?
Thanks

Well, Vista is considered to be quite resource hungry - so you can run less plugins - assuming of course that your plugins actually work in Vista which is ... far ... from certain.
And of course there are a whole host of other problems that revolve around a still fairly new operating system - its had pretty severe teething problems.
Basically, why pay for the dubious privelidge of testing Microsoft's software for them?

A question to the laptop users - are any of you using firewire interfaces?
I've heard these can be a problem unless you are very careful about the chipset you run them on - for instance, focusrite and digidesign both specify texas instrument chipsets, and sometimes the VIA or NEC firewire chipset too...
I'm finding it extremely difficult to find out what chipset laptops actually have.
I'm thinking about a Sager Quadcore model - I like playing games too I want the power of a desktop, but be able to move the PC easily, get rid of some of the wires (which always seem to get filthy - I'm a bit of a clean freak as I have bad dust allergies - and I can't stand the way its so difficult to get around the back of standard PC and clean *properly*) and generally make things a bit more flexible.

I tried using an Ozonic, but had some issues with it and now have an Indigo DJ instead.
The problem with firewire is that unless you have a Macbook or one of the few laptops with a 6-pin connector the usual 4-pin connection is very fiddly and unreliable.
So regardless of what chipset you have I would recommend making sure that you either get a machine with 6-pin or with a PCMCIA port and a card with TI chipset and 6-pin connectors.
I picked up such a card for about €15 on ebay that worked fine with the Ozonic.

Dell latitudes are stable systems, never crashed once during a set.
Chipsets in them are usually to the standards of running sequencers.
I would not go for acer though |
