a macbook would be great, but my only concern is to change al my software and plugins to Mac OS, the HP nx7400 has only good reviews, seems like a really nice option. I havent decided yet... i´ll keep looking |

I also recommend Toshiba, and asus are OK. I also feel the dell latitude (business class) are built well, but stay away from the dell inspirons (home class), as I've handled numerous problems with them for clients.
I would suggest finding one with a PCMCIA slot if possible, since there aren't really any PC express sound cards, and all the pc express cards cost more anyways (like for a full 6 pin wirefire to use with an external sound card, for example).

i have dell inspiron and no problems... never crashed.
i have tiny xp installed.. so theres less windows "junk"
i also recommend to take a look at the warranty... cause my old asus laptop was destroyed by a beer.. (drunk partyguest..) and the support by asus was terrible!
so i decided to buy a dell with 3 year special warranty. you can even drive with your car over it and you get a new one |

I have used Inspirons since 1999 for DJ/Live and had no problems. They have proven very durable and reliable at least in my experience with the 8000 series.
I have the impression though that with the cheap models you get what you pay for, and obviously a €500 Inspiron is not the same machine as a €1500 one, not only when it comes to the raw specs.
If I would get a new machine today I would look at the Vostro series which seems extra sturdy and I have heard good report about for live use.
As for OSX being better for Live use I have trouble seeing any truth in that assesment.
With a Live machine you should keep a clean tidy install...what I do is use TinyXP rev 5 with just a couple of additional tweaks.
The only things that matter IMO...
Performance:
Ableton Live under windows give you better performance than under OSX, albeit marginally.
Stability:
A good windows install is really stable and reading on Abelton and ALDJ forums there seem to be quite a few mac specific issues so I really doubt there is much to gain by using OSX there.
Compatability:
There would have to be some decent gains in other areas to be made if I should sacrifice the ability to run for example autohotkey or plugins like glitch.
Otherwise I remove the shell on my Live laptop so it loads directly into Abelton, so any points about how pleasing the OS might be to use that I can understand for normal applications are moot when it comes to a live setup since you are only using the OS as a host for your live application and shouldn't need to touch it otherwise.
