this is a topic to discuss any new directions you see in trance. new means this year or within the last 12 months more or less...
new means not like more of the same from before. new as in "new"
or maybe new combinations... or maybe new concepts...

anyone?
whats the zeitgeist? the spirit of now?

I haven't heard anything groundbreaking in trance that is actually a natural evolution from within the genre it self...for ages really.
Not saying that's a bad thing, I go to trance parties to get into and get lost to "that" vibe.
Like everyone else, I like surprises, as long as they are good ones and speaking of funk, last time I was surprised in a nice way was when I heard Cydonia's "Bass Monster".
Evolution will come naturally, its just harder to swing things on a grander scale when there are so many new people making music nowdays and psy-trance has been divided into so many tiny sub genres.
A lot of people find comfort in their own pigeon holes and kinda not look outside of them. But that's not just in psy-trance, its everywhere in the dance scene.

Dancefloor music filled with melodies that would break my hearth enter my soul and make me dance till i can't move anymore! Atmospheres created from visuals and other psychedelic stuff in a fully natural envoirnment! People who are there because they all love the music and the culture that we all have created, people who dance and love and celebrate the oneness through the music! This is the future in my dreams!

          Boom :)

That's been done as well.
We need something new, something that will bring trancers even closer...literally make them "one"....like psychedelic orgies or something

Depends on what you mean when you say it's been done because it's been done for some really short time, now the most beautiful thing in all our culture is lost amongst killer music and people who follow it!

For people like me we dedicate our lives to create a few moments of trance and it's not a joke to be able to create those moments, it takes all your time and energy to do it!
For me we would like that the scene would be split with big festivals and parties being held for the masses and small private parties which would accomodate people specialized in music and trance envoirnment. This way i think everybody would be happy lololol An idea anyway probably it's already happening hehehe

I was only joking.
I know its been done before and I would love to go back in time and re-live the moments that changed my life for ever, but I can't do that and although I cherish those old days, I don't wanna live in the past, cause I'll miss out on the present.

copy and paste?

Personally, I think its a waste at this point to focus on ground breaking stuff in a narrowly defined genre like psytrance, it mostly leads to senseless noise.
Sure, someone can claim to make an experimental death metal album that consists of accordians/bagpipes and a kid screaming but it would totally miss the point of what people are looking for who consume death metal.
Its hardly like the musical structures of psytrance have been beat to death. I mean there is virtually nothing going on thats interesting harmonically in psytrance. Melody, interesting chords/progressions, interesting rhythmic patterns, interesting sound design...it wouldn't be "ground breaking" but I still think at some point the best ever trance albums are yet to be made. They won't sound that much different than whats been done before structure wise, they will simple take all the elements of what makes psytrance, psytrance, and do them "better".

I find that I've been listening to artists who I feel a musical connection with, more than anything.
Suomi style for example.
Not necessarily because there's anything groundbreaking, but because there's a free abandon there, more risk taking, more just having fun with it, than most other styles.
That to me is enough to keep me interested.

When I listen to EvsY and Haltya or Mandalavandalz, as a musician myself I feel they are some of the few artists who I feel respect me personally, as a music lover.

I hear the musicianship and where they're coming from and what they're enjoying when they're creating it.

And that they're sharing that love of music with me makes me feel like I'm in the room with them nodding with a shared smile the way band members do when they're jamming and fall into a great groove together.

That means as much to me as any groundbreaking addition to an established music.
I'd like to see more of that.
And maybe from that can come inspiration and innovation.

I've been listenin to a lotta oher psychedelic music lately.
In all honesty, i havent followed psytrance in quite a bit.
Last albums i heard were System 7 and Scorb.

But I feel we need to have more melody using ethnic instruments. There are a great deal more kits then just the sitar and the tabla and flute.
Experience!           ~*** You can tell By the way i use my walk, Im a woman's man, No time to Talk***~

IMO all genres of psytrance music have two major components:

- Danceability -> How easy, good, pleasant it is to dance to it.
- Mind effects -> How twisted, emotional, psychedelic, mind affecting the is music.

Much of todays music is over focused on danceability and/or dance floor friendliness. That's not a problem for most people at the crowd, but Ocelot is asking for new directions, so a good place to start is cutting half of the bass or that crowd pleasing break beats and focus on atmospheres or discrete melodies, and even on the musical aspect itself.

As an example, I'll use the over used Bigwigs album.
The album is full of noises that I never heard anywhere else and I listen to a lot of music. There's no bass pattern at all, and it is clearly not focused on the crowd.

Bigwigs have huge bass lines (they actually improve the musical aspect of the tracks), but you want some tip for new directions? Cut half of the bass in a track. Go listen to some Hallucinogen or old Goa stuff in which the bass plays a much smaller role than it do in much of the today's psy, but the music is mind blowing as Hell.
Respect!           .
...Be gentle with the earth...
...Dance like nobody's watching...
.
...I don't mind not going to Heaven, as long as they've got Coffee in Hell...

Totally agree, it's the story in the music that makes it all so special because it takes you somewhere you have never been before!
