P.S. I seriously doubt that many artists with respect for their own music and work would give a DJ mp3 files of their tracks! If they ever wanted to give you music they would give you the real deal!

The scenario:

artist friend comes on icq..."yo i got new track, wanna hear?" I say "sweet man, send away"...so they send then i get the track. I really like it and i play a party this weekend so duh...im gonna play it! Then if possible i get wav version sent later on...thats all

This is a strange scenario: The artist worked hard on his sound, maybe for weeks or even month - which makes all the difference, - then has it maybe even professionaly mastered.
But would then send it off to a dj friend in mp3 format, because he couldn't wait 3 days until the CD would arrive in the post?
He must not take much pride then in his own sound quality.

Mali 95 out of 100 ppl any given time on a large sound system wont know the difference between BLT tune in wav. format and BLT tune encoded with 192bit - sorry but this is the truth. I will notice since it is my music and I will know what is missing.

Generally I am against playing mp3 format, but majorly is because usually when it comes out from the net sharing programs, au never know what format it REALLY was and how many hands it passed and so on, and many times it is really bad quality. So, if I make the file and see it is ok, then well - this is ok.

And last but probably not least. Plastikman was making music when most of us were wearing pampers. If he thinks it is cool to play ( GOOD QUALITY ) mp3 files from his laptop, then who am I to bitch about it?

Is making a copy of a CD for a friend from the original really so bad? Has not everyone made a dub of their friends tape in the past? Aren't we becoming overly sensitive? Copying a CD for a friend is one thing, file sharing is another. What if a CD is not longer available - would it be wrong for a friend to make another friend a copy?

Ehh, you kinda lost me there. Why is copying a CD different than filesharing? Does the artist receive anything in either of the cases?

Well actually just statistically speaking - in copying a CD there is at least 1 person that actually bought a CD.

In file sharing hmm.. no one buys nothing           A man with a "master plan" is often a woman

if i play the track and peoples heads get tweaked and they dance to it, what the hell does it matter?...do you pick apart the music that much when you are at a PARTY?

My point exactly, Yuli. File sharing happens on such a large scale where so many people are removed from the original purchase of the CD. It’s one thing to complain about filesharing, but if you whine about one copy from a friend to a friend, it seems like you are just being petty and greedy!           my cat is deathly afraid of aluminum foil

Yeah, right, im the greedy one here, releasing trance records :-D

I dont even know what to do with all this money, but still i just have to get more...

Whatever you say, the artist still doesnt receive anything from a copied CD either, no matter if its copied to a friend or to an enemy.

I was just trying to make the point that its not at all a different thing.

And no, i DONT care if people copy CD`s to friends, and no, i dont care about Soulseek being up either. The people who like to buy records will still buy the records, and a big percentage of the people who ONLY download music would not buy the records anyway, no matter if Soulseek was up or not. There will always be a bunch of people that will record, copy, download or steal their music. And there will be people that want to buy the actual product.

Even when music will in the near future be sold in a digital format in the internet, there will still be people who want to buy a record with the covers. People like to collect things.

I never meant that you were greedy Omniholic. I only meant for an individual to complain about someone making a single copy of music is either petty or greedy. I cannot think of another reason why it would be such a problem. I agree with what you have to say about the reason why people do or do not buy music. I just have a hard time believing that online file sharing hurts psytrance music sales. For a large genre of music I do believe it hurts overall sales; however, for a small genre like psytrance I believe the benefits outweigh the negatives. To express why I believe this in the simplest terms: a greater percentage of individuals purchase psytrance music because of exposure to psytrance from file sharing, opposed to the percentage of individuals that do not purchase psytrance music because psytrance music is available free in file sharing. The exposure that file sharing gives a small genrre of music, like psytrance, is invaluable. I could be wrong but that it what I have always believed. cheers           my cat is deathly afraid of aluminum foil
