Check out the kick drums from the G-Sonique Psytrance drum kit pack.

Out of all the psy packs i've checked out - their samples just has a great sound to it.

A sine wave, with a fast and fine-tuned envelope on the pitch.. that's all that you need.
Perhaps a tad bit of saturation, some EQ and some compression, but that's all you need to make these kicks. No weird science, no hidden tricks or magic.

A kick is just a kick. Don't over complicate it           Super Banana Sauce http://www.soundcloud.com/knocz

One thing I have learned from working on tracks is that you can go insane working on the kick and bass. The trick is to focus on them in relativity to the entire mix when it comes to the tweaking/eq. Not all great sounding kicks will work in every track. The kick has to "fit" in my opinion. This fitting can be based on theory like base harmonics, or just going by ear. The best I feel is combining logic and theory with gut feeling about a kick.

I started out using samples, merely cause I didn’t know any better. Now adays, knowing how to pitch bend a sine wave using two mod envelopes is just the best option. I use sample packs as examples playing the sample, then my sine wave and tweak it till it’s similar to the sample.

This is because many samples were cut out of a track, poorly… so using headphones you would hear a click or something in the kick which will sound like crap if you don’t notice it.

Keeping it too simple ain’t the best option either, cause you’ll end up with a basic 909 – which you can probably use to make some old school Goa from the 80’s. Layering is where you get it working..

I just go with my little brother, BassiZm, , what an awesome yet simple tool which outputs powerful psy kicks. Also for it to fit in better make sure the end frequency is tuned to the root..

Using charts like this one will help with this.

Keep in mind also that a RAW sample is like RAW meat. You have to cook it for it to taste/sound good. Processing like eq, comp, saturation even a 5-10% wet phaser can shape up the sound giving it more interest and clarity. Don’t overcook the meat,,,,, just like don’t over process the sound.

“Subtle tweaks” on “FX chains” is what gives you that nice sound. The order of the fx in your chain is also important for optimum sound.

I implemented a calculator which might be useful as well:

This is also very nice:

It even lets you define the length in musical values such as 1/16 etc.

I guess the most used kick drum in this genre comes from a preset in Bazzism. Just a guess.           https://soundcloud.com/shivagarden
